One phrase instantly comes to mind here that Paul has always seemed to understand, and The Stones have never understand... Quality before Quantity
Listen to their No Security live album. One of the best live albums ever.

WR, I think you're a cool guy, but what's with The Stones bashing at every opportunity?

I have tried many, many times to really enjoy them. I mean, I love music and people love the music the stones make so, I should too, right? Well it just doesn't work for me. I see so many live clips and it is just garbage, amplified to a stadium sized stage. Mick Jagger cannot sing, that might be the biggest turn off. He shouts, mumbles, and groans. ANd then they try and harmonize....ugh, it just sounds like one big shouting match of who can shout higher than the other! Like on "Start Me Up" the..."you make a grown man cryyyy!" that just sounds HORRIBLE! And Keith Richards is no supremo guitarist, but the world sure thinks he is! More times than not, he plays without all six-strings! Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts were always just kinda there...people bash RIngo for simplicity...Good Lord! : Words of praise to The Stones: Brian Jones and Ronnie Wood. Brian was a very good guy for them, maybe the best thing to happen to them. His touch, made the very few Stones tracks I do enjoy, enjoyable. Ronnie Wood is a phenomenal guitarist, easily in my top 30. His work with The Faces/Rod Stewart easily transferred to The Stones, and covered Richards' sloppy attempts. ....all clear now?

Gimme The Zombies or Gerry And The Pacemakers before the Stones any day.

Ok WR, thanks for clearing it up. Obviously I'm inclined to disagree now. Mick can indeed sing, he's not technical but the tone of his voice works for me, really projects raw emotion. I guess you're not a fan of people like Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, Willie Nelson etc? (I really like their work, even though their voices aren't God-like.) I always found them to be great musicians, Keith is one of the greatest rhythm guitarist of all time, are all six strings really necessary to be a 'supremo guitarist'? Not the easiest to replicate at all, he has such a chugging, junkie, individual feel to his playing, very distinctive. Charlie and Bill were integral to the sound, Bill was a great bassist and did some great bass work for the band (Gimme Shelter, Under My Thumb, Miss You) - Keef was good at that bass n all. I notice you left out Mick Taylor, at least he got a lucky escape. Maybe songs about drinking, fighting and picking up chicks in some Louisiana bar aren't for you.

Exactly. I'm not fans of any of those listed vocalists. Well, I'll admit there are a handful of Willie Nelson tracks I'm partial too, just as there are a small handful of Stones tracks...and and even smaller portion of Bob Dylan tracks. Lets just say I'd never pay to see any of them live. What really makes a great rhythm guitarist though? Can he strum the chords in time and accurately?...sometimes I guess he is perfect for the stones. Mick Taylor sorta sits on that middle ground for me He doesn't bug me, but he just sorta "happened" in my eyes. But, I think sort of sums things up accurately.

LOL, this is actually very promising, since McCartney always mentions the Stones' setlist ("I want to hear 'Satisfaction' and 'Sympathy for the Devil'") when he is asked about his own stale choices.

Yeah, The Beach Boys were killer. They did 48 when I saw them but, keep in mind they used an intermission. Paul usually clocks in at just under 40...somewhere between 33-38

Love or hate The Stones -- the fact that 70 songs are even on the table is impressive.

Agreed.

I too would much rather hear the "studio versions" when it comes to the Stones. I've seen them live in 1975 and 1989, and while I thought both shows were good, I don't believe it comes close to the performance Paul gives us each tour. Just my 2 cents...
-
Paul could make a guest appearance at a Stones concert and sing "I Wanna Be Your Man" with them.

No worries. I totally love The Zombies.
