@jimmix I saw him with the Four Tops on the 2024 Flower Power cruise. I was told by a friend that she saw him being led off the ship at the end of the cruise (in Miami) in handcuffs!

Pat Heywood, the Nurse in Franco Zeffirelli’s ‘Romeo and Juliet,’ Dies at 92
A movie Paul McCartney was asked to play Romeo, but went to Leonard Whitting instead.
-
@jimmix Leonard Whiting

Given what we've of Paul's acting skills over the years, I think we can be grateful he didn't play Romeo.

@Bruce M. Physically he would have made a perfect Romeo, costumes and all... but they would have wanted to use a dialect coach to get him to inflect his voice a certain way, and to "talk Shakespeare"... it might have been frustrating for him that he couldn't just be himself and portray the role as Paul McCartney, not as a 15th century Venetian teenager. With the exception of his cameo in Pirates of the Caribbean, he's never had a film role where he didn't play himself.
From what I've read he really was interested in Shakespeare during his school years, but Romeo probably seemed too overwhelming of a challenge for him in 1966-67 (when he was offered the role) and that may be why he decided to pass. There was a (supposed) quote from him in a biography that said he took the actress Olivia Hussey (that played Juliet) out to dinner at the time of the movie offer, and that he "really fancied her," but decided not to do the movie.
I think he could do a film role successfully though if he had the right script and director and creative team behind him.

That’s for sure!

@ladyleslie Paul was 24/25 when offered the role and Olivia was 15 years old ffs!! Leonard Whiting turned 17 during the filming. I was a huge 13 year old fan when it came out in 1968! My friends and I stayed in the theater and watched it again (when you used to be able to do that!) I have the vinyl soundtrack and virtually memorized the entire movie! (the soundtrack had dialogue as well as music) Our 9th grade class in 1969 rented out a theater to watch the film (all our English classes were reading the book too)
When Juliet says ‘Romeo, Romeo wherefore art thou Romeo?” (which actually means “Why (do you have to be) Romeo?” since their families were from rival houses) some a-hole boy yells out “Here I is!” Of course all the guys laughed! -
@njr Him, too.
