Paul's Pop Up Show - Covent Garden - 18th Oct 2013 - ARCHIVE
-
During World War II, St. Paul's was bombed several times, but remained standing. It became a source of inspiration for Londoners during those awful Blitz times. People were re-assured that as long as they continued to see St. Paul's dome, there was hope. Churchill recognized its importance as a morale-booster, and ensured all efforts be made to save it.

Ah.. Different St Paul's. This is St Paul's, Covent Garden - also known as The Actor's Church: http://www.actorschurch.org/ You're thinking about St Paul's Cathedral, a much grander building - but your recollection about that is indeed part of London's war-time heritage. Martin

Ah...thanks, Martin! I just thought it was the one I've always heard about! Thanks for the info! This St. Paul is pretty interesting, also!

Tony Bramwell said there were really big crowds there. Rusty Anderson posted a pic of Paul, before the event, standing in a doorway wearing a long fancy satin cape adorned with the Cross--wonder where Paul got that. Really nice picture Go to Rusty's facebook page to see it, or join Bramwell as a friend on F.B.
If you watch the video again, the stage is in front of a church, St. Paul's I believe!!! My thoughts are McCartney and Co. may have been in there before playing and he put on a vestment used for services in the church. That is just a guess.
Yes it's St. Paul's Church (not Cathedral) and I believe you must be right!

I know one or two here love movies, the church has a memorial to Vivien Leigh: and is about the hold an anniversary concert in her memory: Martin

Thanks, Martin. She doesn't look like herself in that poster It's real nice they're remembering her and Larry this way, at the actor's church in the West End. An online headline about Paul's pop up: "McCartney Fever Hits London"

The Quarrymen once performed (before Paul joined them) on the back of a lorry.......was this Paul's first live performance from inside the back of an (articulated) lorry? Shades of the final episode of the prisoner !!!

We don't call it an "articulated lorry" in the US (semi-trailer truck), but the mini-concert in Times Square was done the same way.

A nice write up about the pop up gig, with fan quotes and pictures here from the NME http://www.nme.com/news/paul-mccartney/73299 Quick question to the mods (ie the lovely Martin!), with something time urgent like this gig was, when the first info came out couldn't it have been put in the Not such a bad boy forum too (or as a sticky in both) - many uk fans were looking in that forum due to the signing thread, and wouldn't have thought to check this one.... such as ME! Despite not seeing this thread (which had pics of the truck as early as 11.30am, while i was sat outside a different venue in london waiting for an artist other than Paul, quickly checking the not such a bad boy forum signing thread!) i do have a tale to tell about this gig... but time for bed so it's for another day!

Hi, I did what I thought reasonable given the tenuous nature of the info circulating. This thread did indeed start in Not Such A Bad Boy because at the time nothing suggested a "Rock Show" was to unfold. I only moved it across into this forum after the event. The topic had several changes of title through the morning as the situation changed to catch as many eyes as possible - including capital letters and exclamation marks along the way. For those at the signing I added duplicate posts into that thread as the significance of the event and the knowledge they were nearby unfolded, in the hope they might be posting to that topic using smart-phones from the queue. Stickie topics are the domain of officialdom and the rumours and pics circulating I brought to the board were nothing of that nature. To be honest I was concerned to be bringing even that to the board as my status here might give any info undue weight . I know some fans go to extreme lengths on the slightest of suggestions - such as jumping on planes and trains and incurring considerable expense. I didn't want to trigger any such for a false alarm. It was pure co-incidence I happened on the rumours and was able to follow the leads. I should have been sleeping between night shifts and paid the price at 04.00 am that night At least it was ahead of the weekend and I've caught up since. Martin

it's ok Martin it wasn't a dig, just a question, and thanks for explaining it so well So it was in NSABB?? How did i miss it?!!!! Damn i'm blind! Were the pics of the truck in there then, and you say they were in the signing thread? I was sure i looked, but must have been mistaken. I was outside the national theatre waiting for Tori Amos at the time! I know we looked at Pauls twitter and hmv between 11.30 and 12, and the nsabb forum (but my bf was the one looking, so i'll blame him for missing it heheheh!) Anyway, i did make it there - found out at 1.23pm, jumped in a cab, got out and there was slience - so i worried it had started on time and i'd missed it, but then out of nowhere NEW started, so i ran like hell along the covered market and appeared at the very back at 1.32pm, and got to see 4 and a half of the 5 songs, but at least i was there and it was fab! I just kick myself that i didn't know about it til past 1pm, i could have been near the front, but heck i'm from the north of England and if i hadn't even had been i na pre booked months ago trip to london to see Tori Amos i wouldn't have even seen Paul!! So it worked out (and i still got back in time to meet Tori Amos (who had to listen to me say i've just seen Paul!!) and see the show!

who is Tori Amos?

who is Tori Amos?
hi Peter
i met my fella because of Tori, me and him have been together 20 years, and we've both loved Tori since she started in 91. Just like me and my sister travel the country seeing Paul, me and my partner travel the country seeing Tori! She's close to her original fans, and has always been good to me. Now obviously Paul is my no 1, and i would have missed Tori to go to all the London Paul stuff - but my sister was so gutted she wasnt there (seeing as we do all Paul stuff together) i agreed to ignore the signing, she wasn't happy for me to meet Paul without her (huge understatement!). The Covent Garden thing luckily she understands and seems happy for me - i was only across the river and i couldn't ignore it when i found out! But it was so exciting - i'm not an off the cuff person, i usually need a lot of planning, but to find out so late and then leg it and make it so quick, it felt fab!!!! Bit of a long answer Peter sorry -
hi I missed watching CILLA on the telly to go to the Norton show. me mum knows she comes second to Paul she used to come third but we no longer have a dog.

I can picture the 3 of us in shock at the Liverpool gig when they booed Paul's mention of Cilla! People at Tori things would often say what if Tori and Paul were on the same day, and i would pretend i didn't know what i would do (when i knew i would miss Tori for Paul! But you don't like to wind up other fans so i never said!), but now on Friday my answer was i can do them both heheh!!

Well chuffed you got to see him for a bit. No way was I leaving the store, anyways I had to watch the ladies bags, doubt if I would have even if physical fit.

wheeeeeeeeeeeee i'm all excited again - brings it right back! I can see myself on that pic (with me being in the back right side of the crowd! ie bottom left of the pic) Anyone know if there's a bigger version of it around?!
-
Marshall Arts seem to have culled it from elsewhere - does anybody recognise the page format - it's a Saturday glossy or entertainment supplement of a newspaper. If they have an on-line form it might be better there. Update: It's i a tabloid version of the The Independant newspaper. Obviously the Saturday edition. Martin
