Outside Lands, San Francisco, CA, 9 - 11th August - ARCHIVE

Fyi, here's another great review from Rolling Stone: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/outside-lands-kicks-off-with-fireworks-from-paul-mccartney-20130810
But the biggest fireworks at Outside Lands' opening ceremony ? literally and figuratively ? came with the day's anchor act, the Beatles' Paul McCartney. Some fans found the performance cathartic. Some cried. Others had wide smiles from start to finish. Nearly everyone understood the weight of Sir Paul tearing soulfully through Beatles and Wings numbers with the conviction of the person who wrote those songs ? "Blackbird," "Paperback Writer," "Hey Jude," "Eleanor Rigby," "Let It Be," and so on and so forth ? which, individually and collectively, helped shape our very idea of rock & roll.
And there's actually a nice photo of Paul, too. His hair actually looks halfway decent. Shocker!

Wow, Magical Mystery Tour sounded AWFUL!!
Huh? I just watched a video of it on YouTube and i liked it. He's singing it in a lower key which is what everyone is always nagging at him to do here. The audio on YouTube was, as usual, muffled but I liked the arrangement a lot and thought he sounded good. [..]
Apart from him not doing the intro, it's the exact same arrangement as always. And it doesn't sound any less or more strained than on all post-2005 versions.

I was there and it didn't sound awful in person at all. I've only ever heard him do it in soundcheck a few years back, so it was great he brought it out last night!

It sounds much more strained than the '09 versions, the entire band does a dreadful job not just Paul.

MMT with a slightly different beginning...
Ya' know, if Paul is going to publicly denounce marijuana, he should really stop the "oh, something smells good out there" quips. And Chris is right: Neither Paul nor the band was on point this particular performance. And I couldn't help but notice the large number of people...leaving. I thought Beatle songs were supposed to be guaranteed, fail-proof crowd-pleasers. He sounds great on "Hi, Hi, Hi"...ironically.

"Yesterday" with string quartet....really nice version!! (Thanks, Jim)
Did anyone but me notice that the string quartets sheet music said "Yesterday By Paul McCartney?" (No Lennon/McCartney!) Yes!
-
One hell of a "Helter Skelter" there!! Awesome performance of it!

WixRocks!:
...not sure why he added that one back in...it's so weird out of the opening number.
In the '93 tour it was played towards the end of the main set list.
And it was strange then too!

Absolutely love this...

The pot comment bugged me too...make up your mind Paulie! I don't think anyone cares either way! That really didn't sound good. The harmonies were a whole herd of wobbly. It's time to lock "Magical Mystery Tour" up in the vaults.

But he didn't publicly denounce pot smoking. Ever. He said he had decided personally to stop, for his daughter. That's not denouncing it. That's making his personal choice. And in that same interview he mentioned that he has publicly supported legalization for years and still did but that it was time for someone else to pick up that torch. I don't think his views on weed have changed at all. What's changed is a touchy child-custody situation, and a new wife whose brother died of a drug overdose. I respect the fact that he's respecting those things.

You beat me to the post, Michelle -- that's exactly what I was going to say! And for the record, that video of MMT is awful -- the other videos by the same person sound bad too. They were not in a good spot, far back and to the side, the quality of the auxiliary speakers was not good at all, noticed it earlier in the day too. You could also hear the boom boom boom coming from the electronic-disco (or what ever it is called!) tent.

This is a thousand times worse than anything Paul has done recently:
