EGYPT STATION

P.S. I actually met her when I was about 7 or 8. She was appearing somewhere near Cleveland, OH. I wasn’t named after her (it was the wife of my dad’s best friend) but my middle name is Jayne.
That's a nice claim to fame.

Okay, sorry I derailed this thread. Back to Egypt Station!
I listened to it twice recently in my car and really like most of it. My criteria is, if I don’t have to skip a song (like Nod Your Head on MAF) then it’s a really good album! Lol!
Nod Your Head is one of my favorites on MAF! I'd sooner skip breathing.
But I fear I'm going to derail the thread again.
“To each his own!” You probably like What Goes On too!
YESSSS!!!!
That’s the one Beatles song I skip (in addition to Revolution 9 which I don’t even consider to be a song!)
Whaaa? I love when Ringo addresses George and asks for him to rock-one for me, or whatever it is he says. Speaking of Ringo....his "Don't Pass Me By" just doesn't work for me. I tried to like it enough to keep it, but just can't...It needed to be sped up...it just drags...and the lyric...."...I was so unfair, you were in a car crash and you lost your hair." OMG! ...lost your hair??? Coulnd't he have at least changed it to something like......"...you were in a car crash and still were over there...."....anthing to ryhyme with "so unfair' but "lost your hair." I had to remove it from the new White Album, along with Paul's two Honey Pies, the do it in the road bit, and Revolution 9.....five songs. But I inserted the Anthology Version of George's excellent "Not Guilty" directly after "Yer Blues." It fits and sounds just about as good as the new mixes.
You’re thinking of Honey Don’t where Ringo says, “Rock on George, one time for Ringo.” What Goes On is just an annoying song to me.
You're right. I realized it a bit later in the day when humming it in my head. I don't dislike "What Goes On" at all, especially the harmonies. It's Ringo, it's country, it fits. And it has a nifty George guitar solo.

Although Ringo had started writing Don't Pass Me By even before he joined the Beatles, I've often wondered if that line about the car crash and 'losing your hair' was a reference to actress Jayne Mansfield, who was killed in a car accident (1967),the year before the songs recording in 1968. Initially reports said that she had been decapitated but it later turned out that it was her blonde wig that had been mis-identified in the on scene police photographs.
Well, if he started writing it before joining the Beatles, then he spent years coming up with..not much. In his song, he mentions the person he was waiting for called and said she'd be late, about an hour or two..... I don't think that would be any reference to Jayne Mansfield, but I guess it could. Not trying to be gory or disrespectful. Just wish he had asked George..his go to guy for help....and likely best friend... in the group...and asked for help with that one.

Did Ringo write "Octopus Garden" ?

Yes, and there is a bit of him playing it on the piano to George in January 1969 in the Let It Be movie. It was recorded in April and July 1969 for Abbey Road LP.

Oh, they'll find some way to give it to Drake, or Rhianna or the never-goes-away, Taylor Swift. Or to some new artist making a splash that we may not even know about!

Back in October, I thought that EG getting multiple Grammy nominations was a sure thing but now I'm not so sure. My fear is the old adage...out of sight, out of mind. Capitol and Paul did a very good job promoting ES prior to its release (and the whole Carpool Karaoke thing didn't hurt for sure) but since ES reached # 1, Capitol has been non-existent. Everything concerning Paul over the last month is either the Wildlife/Red Rose Remasters and/or the White Album remix.
And whenever you do see any mention of ES from Capitol relative to marketing and /or advertising they just keep repeating the same 3 lead songs (the Double A single Come On To Me and I Don't Know and Fuh You. Egypt Station is far more than these 3 songs. While Come On To Me did a good job for ES on the Adult Contemporary Charts, it has now run its course. And while "Don't Know" in my opinion, is a very good song, the other 2 aren't even close to the best songs on ES. Where is a follow-up single for any one of these...Who Cares, Dominoes or Happy With You. I'll leave that answer to our resident chart expert, Bruce. The problem is that except for the people who actually bought the album, no one is hearing the really good songs on Egypt Station on the radio, TV or other medium from what I can see. Maybe Bruce is hearing some inside information that will give me some hope.
I've said this before, but Paul is not helping himself. ES received some of the best reviews Paul has ever received for a Solo album, and yet he is only playing 3 ES song on his current tour. I did notice that he (Thank God) played "Who Cares" on his latest Paris Show but why not songs like Happy With You, Dominoes, Hand-In-Hand, I Don't Know, People Want Peace, Do It Now etc that are far better than Fuh You .
I hope I'm wrong and that the voters have not forgotten about Egypt Station and have only read the press releases from Capitol. If they only listen to the "lead" songs that Capitol keep pushing, Paul doesn't have a chance of winning.

"Egypt Station" came out "all the way back" in October, or not so long before then; but that wasn't so long ago. ES still stands out and is a vivid force in the music world. It's from music legend Paul McCartney, you know ! Wish they'd hurry out the long promised "Who Cares" as a single with the Emma Stone music vid in which she dances with Macca, as a strong reminder "The White Album" reissue whipped up a frenzied whirlwind of hoopla and now the Wings Box Set's caused a huge uproar and the all gussied up "Wild Life" and "Red Rose Speedway" remixes using current tech in the studio as was lavished on the White Album--and there's the one two three punch of these massive gigs in Paris, Denmark and Poland and the United Kingdom traveling medicine show extravaganzas coming up soon during Holiday season and awards season--"Variety" "Time" magazine, "Rolling Stone" "Uncut" and "NME" etc., all take notice along with major online media and broadcast and telly sources

I am getting worn out defending "Fuh You" to be honest. I still LOVE this tune. LOVE. The song has a great sound. As I have said earlier, in Austin, "Fuh You" was greeted very, very warmly. The song sounded great live, and echoed throughout the audience. Yea, are the lyrics a bit weak; so what. Half of Hey Jude is nah, nah, nah, nah. So what. To me, it all comes down to sound. And "Fuh You" sounds great. Is it Hey Jude? Of course not. But, its fun, its fast, its a bit naughty, and it simply rocks. Thanks Sir Paul.

ES is still a great album, but I'm not sure by what standard it's still"a vivid force in the musical world." It's dropped off the charts. Radio isn't playing it anymore. The trade press isn't writing about it. And yes, where the hell is that Emma Stone "Who Cares" video? Paul and Capitol did a terrific round of pre-release promotion and then it just... stopped.

It’s true. It worked perfectly live in Copenhagen. Everyone was dancing and singing along. All 3 new songs went down greatly and sounded good.

I stated Egypt Station is a vivid force in music "because it's from music legend Paul McCartney" and also (that little thing) it's a superlative album, a truly excellent example of his amazing talents which I think is one of his classics.
-
I love "Fuh You" too ! It's insanely catchy, so much fun
-
FWIW, I think Confidante -- People Want Peace -- Hand in Hand -- Dominoes is probably the best 4-song run on any post-Beatle Macca album.

My original point was that I'm "now" not sure that ES is going to win any Grammy awards. As Bruce pointed out (and I did too) Capitol did a great job of "pre-release promotion and marketing for ES but probably about a month a go they just stopped.
It doesn't matter that some of us here "love" the song "Fuh You" but forever reason, the track hasn't made one dent on any of the charts. If you remember, Paul spent some time with the "Hit producer" Ryan Tedder when he couldn't get together with his regular ES producer (Greg Kurstin) because of a conflict in their schedules. Paul as the story goes wasn't too happy on the song they were working on (Fuh You) and supposedly Ryan Tedder asked Paul what he wanted to accomplish from their sessions. Paul told him he wanted a hit and it sounds as though Ryan talked him into continuing with the song. As we know, it then ended up on the proper album.
I think Paul took a chance on the song becoming a hit and even came up with the controversial title hoping that it would further boost its chances. Personally I don't like the title nor the lyrics in general compared to so many of the songs on ES. I admit Fuh You is catchy and that since it is only a little over 3 minutes in length I didn't think as a big time fan that the song marred the album in general I said that in my review many pages back.
Again, it doesn't matter at all that I didn't like the song (for me it's the title/lyrics). The fact is that Paul's/Capitol's "gamble" didn't work by placing "Fuh You" as one of its main "lead" ES songs. The fact that it failed shouldn't mean that you just "stop" marketing a very good album in general. As I said, "Who Cares", "Happy With You" and "Dominoes" are all potential follow up "successes" to "Come On To You" on the Adult Contemporary Charts. I personally think that all 3 songs are more typical McCartney type melodic songs than "Fuh You" and all have far more meaningful lyrics than the latter. I was also shocked that a couple weeks ago on National Bullying Week (if I have that name correct) "Who Cares" wasn't announced as the follow-up single for Egypt Station. This is especially true when Paul had apparently done a video with Emma Stone for "Who Cares".
I'm just stating my concern that from a marketing point of view, ES seems to totally off the radar. From beginning to end in my opinion, ES is a very good album but except for people who bought the album, no one is hearing the really good songs on any of the media.

Just to be honest, I was NEVER a big fan of Chaos and Creation In The Backyard. Many of the songs just made me cringe (A Certain Softness, Jenny Wren, English Tea); I really was not fond of Fine Line either; thought it was a lousy selection as the first single. No song on Chaos charted at all in the US, and barely made a blip in the UK. Chaos only went as high as #6 in the US and barely made the Top Ten in the UK; in three weeks Chaos was out of the Top 200 in the UK! Egypt Station, on the other hand, debut at #1; Come On To Me made it to #6 on the singles chart on the Adult Contemp. Yes I do agree that Who Cares should be released NOW! A superior rocker with a great message. Anyway, my two cents.

To quote Roger Waters from 1987:
'It's absolutely ridiculous to judge a record solely on sales. If you're going to use sales as the sole criterion, it makes Grease a better record than Graceland.'
