EGYPT STATION

At this point I'm willing to just forget Fuh You ever happened. It's not getting a great response online and radio is ignoring it. Almost ever Paul album seems to have at least one clunker on it, so I'll just forgive and try to forget.

Mojo magazine has given Egypt Station 4/5 and says it's his best collection of songs since Band on the Run!! Where have we heard that before?? Greg Kurstin states in an article that he wanted the album to be as good as Chaos! Also it seems that Fuh You is just a bit of fun that definately is not reprentative of the album. Sounds promising!
Agreed...this does sound promising. Can Mike (or anyone else) post this review here. Would love to read it!
The fact that "Fuh You" has not been well received by most to put it mildly (just read "Singles Club" review made up of 4 music critics...yikes) was scaring me. And while the Double A single ("Come On To Me" and "I Don't Know) has generally been positive, not too many are calling them "great" either.
This 4 out of 5 review is telling me there are has to be some good to very good deeper tracks. Hopefully, there are a half of dozen (or possible more) very solid songs on Egypt Station beyond what we've heard so far.
BJ, my gut feeling or "vibe" about this album is that it will be a solid effort but not a top five favorite McCartney album. I truly doubt it will be as good as CHAOS because of the songs I have heard so far and with 16 songs there are too many chances for clunkers. The one song that few people have mentioned that seems to be promising is "Confidante". I am also curious about the album opening with instrumental track. Looking forward to the release.

Interesting. Curious of the ratings Mojo has given other recent McCartney albums. That would give me a better sense of how to take this current review.

Only seen a hard copy of the review so can't download. Uncut magazine has done a bigger review and awarded 7/10. It's a positive review that doesn't rate "Come On To Me" and "Fuh You" but has some really good things to say about songs like "Confidante" "Do it Now"and "Hand in Hand".

Mike, thanks. I went Online but couldn't find a complete "Uncut" Review of Egypt Station either. I did see their announcement of the Double sided single...Come On To Me and I Don't know but that was it.

Yankeefan, Just saw Mike's post on Egypt Station getting a 7 out of 10 from UnCut Magazine. Haven't found it but that rating would go right along with your gut feeling of Egypt Staion being a "solid" album. I think (7) is generally a "good" rating but not great or masterpiece type level. Maybe the complete review will be out in a few days. I don't know how it works but maybe some of the big music magazines agree to wait a certain amount of days from a company like Capitol before they can release the full review Online.

Here's the Mojo article guys!

Like you, not sure how the timing of being able to read reviews from these publications online works. I did check Rolling Stone magazine online today and did not see anything yet. They have generally been favorable to McCartney's albums the last 10-15 years. I was hoping for raves because I honestly think this may be his last album of brand new songs unless you count the ones he recorded for this album that did not make the cut and could be released in some form at a later time. That being said, I will be satisfied if the overall critical analysis of this album is positive.

Yankeefan,
Agree but it is very encouraging. The reviewer (Mat Snow) isn't detailed in any way but I like his descriptions of the album as a whole. The adjectives Mr. Snow uses about Egypt Station are what I think we are hoping....bounciest, catchiest, consistent, no song outstays its welcome etc etc. Very hopeful indeed.

Yes oobu24...thanks for posting.
While the actual review (at the bottom) is way too general (but is very encouraging for the album) , I love the articles especially the one with Keith Cameron doing the interview. He brought much out of Paul that not too many people can do.
Some of the questions/comments I really liked were:
*How do you know when it's time to make a new album? I loved Paul's answers..."comes a point when you have too many songs" or when he quotes Nancy..."What are you doing with all these songs in your room". Judging by what Paul says and what Greg Kurstin is quoted (separate article), Paul has another album (around 12 songs) with the extra songs that didn't make the cut. Greg talks about how good some of these extras are. Sounds like we could have another situation like Chaos and MAF where the latter album in my opinion is as good. Maybe we will get the follow-up album relatively quick similar to those 2 albums.
* Keith Cameron really zeroed in on 3 songs during the interview. By doing that, he got Paul to really give the reader some actual deep insight to those songs. They were "I Don't Know", Happy With You and Despite Repeated Warnings. While we have already heard "I Don't Know", I think this article really helped me understand Paul's lyrics better. The song as Keith tells Paul "feels at variance with your public persona where often your're the embodiment of great self assurance".
I really look forward now to the other 2 songs...Happy With You and Despite Repeated Warnings from this interview. Keith describes the former as a postive declaration but edged with darkness. They talk about that and Paul brings up Ringo and his past troubles with alcohol. Despite Repeated Warnings seems to be the most political song on Egypt Station but the lyrics that are posted seem very smart and full of ambiguity. I like that a lot. Keith also calls the music spectacular on this one.
I also loved the separate article with Greg kurstin. Greg talkes about additional songs on Egypt Station that he really likes including "Do It Now" (another song where Paul uses one of his Dad's sayings), Confidante and again Happy With You. Greg refers to the latter songs as simple acoustic numbers that we all know that Paul is especially good at.
Finally the main interview with Mr. Cameron, where he gets Paul to talk about the opening instrumental including a comparison to the beginning of Seargent Pepper. So many good and interesting things in both articles.

Thanks oobu. Really looking forward to more reviews.
OMG...now I have to preface this by saying that the writer (Mike Sorenson) is no doubt a huge Macca fan but this is making me even more excited about this album. Yankeefan and I have been predicting a "solid" but not top tier album. We may have to adjust our own personal reviews once we have the album. Maybe it might just be a top tier album!
The critic only covers less than half of the tracklist, but he really likes all of them (not a bad track as he says) and that includes "Fuh You". I predict that "Fuh You" will still be the "posterchild" for all the negative reviews especially those who don't like Paul in the first place. Hopefully, those who don't like the track after hearing it on the internet, will overlook it and keep in mind that Greg Kurstin is the producer for all the other tracks. The hopefull sign it that this review seems to be in line with the others I've seen so far (not many at this stage). It seems like Paul has a great deal of diversity and creativity in Egypt Station which is a trademark of his music/albums in the first place. As I said, I'm really excited at what I've read so far.

Enjoyed the review and sounds great. I will be happier when I read good review from sources who are not the biggest McCartney fans in general. I think the thing I am most excited about is the diversity of the music and it seems to be pretty good lyrically also. I am glad I am off the day I get the album, will be able to listen to it several times and just soak it in.

I agree and now I'm really looking forward to seeing Rollingstone's review. They tend to be the most objective pointing out both highs and lows.
I also really liked Greg Kurstin's interview with Mojo. The fact that he really likes the album and his barometer was Chaos. Greg also talks about the diversity. He used the example of Seargant Pepper where you had 2 songs as diverse as Lucy and When I'm 64.
And Keith Cameron's interview (Mojo) with Paul was so great and had so many parts to it. The part about "Fuh You" was so interesting as well. Paul's conversation with the producer on the song (i'm forgetting his name) was funny. Finally Paul gives him the answer to his question...what do you want to accomplish on our session and Paul says...to make a hit. The producer says...yes that's what I want to hear (something to that effect). Whether you like "Fuh You" or not, it shows that Paul at 76 and everything he has accomplished, is still going for it.
