Excuse me but I liked it. It is a different version of Lady Madonna and was one of the few non-depressing songs on the show.

The ending was very beautiful, great voices.

To each their own, if you liked it well am glad for you. After the song I did not say a word for a minute or so. I finally turned to my wife and said that was pretty bad. She says to me I did not want to say anything because I know how much you love Paul but maybe it is time for him to hang it up. Trust me, my wife loves McCartney and tries her best to find the good in anything but she just could not do it with this performance. Oh well.

I will be interested in the opinion of BJ, Nancy R, Love To Travel, and Bruce M regarding the song choice and his vocal.

Pretty much expected these responses from this site. Really? Paul tells a heartbreaking story about his amazing mother Mary, who as a nurse during World War Two worked countless dangerous hours during the bombing of London and then plays Lady Madonna dedicated to the nurses working countless hours during this pandemic. IMO he sounded fine and the photos of these heroes was very powerful.
My only problem with the show was the total lack of mention of law enforcement, fire, and the military. These are the amazing first responders watching over the 99.9993% of the population not infected by this virus.

Have to agree with the negative posts...Poor song choice and voice, I'll leave the arrangement for others to debate. I thought Mick sounded great and proper song choice. Elton was good. My surprise performance was Billy Joe Armstrong...I really liked it and I don't really listen to Green Day.

If you thought he sounded fine, what can I say besides to each their own. I am not just picking on McCartney, Stevie Wonder was not good either and Elton basically was shouting the song. Mick sounded like the Mick of old and Bille Joe Armstrong did well. Like I said in another post the end was excellent with the beautiful voices of Celine Dion, Lady Gaga, John Legend and Andrea Boceli.

When he started talking about his mum (and got a bit choked up there, did you all notice?) I thought for sure he was going to do Let It Be. Then he launches into this weird Lady Madonna. The only good thing was that he FINALLY sang the lyric correctly: "Did you THINK that money was heaven sent?" (instead of KNOW!) Somebody on FB (Paul McCartney Fanthology group) said they thought he dropped the key an octave. Did he? Anyway, not a fan of the arrangement. The vocal suffered because of it - if he had done it faster it would have sounded better. (not as fast as he usually does it, but like the original recording) The majority on that site seemed to like the performance. And Maccaroni, he definitely should NOT have done Yesterday! That would have been way too depressing, plus he hasn't sung it in concert for several years!
I usually couldn't care less about the Stones, but Mick was in fine vocal form and sounded just like 50 years ago! Also enjoyed Billy Joe Armstrong and the "triplet" Keith Urbans.

I thought Paul seemed nervous, but he need not have been. He's Paul. The same Paul I can't wait to see in concert again as soon as it's safe. The same Paul who's been there to cheer me up now and for the last 56 years. To me, he did just fine. Seeing him sing, seeing how choked up he got about the loss of his mum (and thinking of all the nurses in this pandemic), made me want to hug him. He's the best, and despite having to put this together at Mary's house instead of his own, I'm so glad he decided to participate the way he did, not lip-synching with a backing track. He inspired me and warmed my heart. Just so glad he is well and staying safe. Love him so much. x

Now that one I like. But of course it aired more than14 years ago! His voice was still really good in 2005/2006.

That was his house. They are all at his house in East Sussex.

I forgot about Keith Urban, he was good also. Nice seeing Nicole also -lol

Huge fan, but that was a poor performance. Also, seems that it was just filmed with an iPhone whilst other performers have gone to much greater efforts. Disappointing. There have been a few posts on here lately which suggest that McCartney might be coming to an end of his touring years and live performances. I have violently rejected these suggestions. But, on the basis of that performance, I would suggest that, sadly, we may not have many more years left.

Paul sounded very breathless and that was just his spoken introduction. But then I work with a guy who's Paul's age and he's often breathless too so I'm not really surprised.
As for the performance itself, well if that had been a Paul McCartney tribute act, they'd never work again.
But the sentiment is there and there's no denying the thrill of seeing and hearing an up-to-date performance from Paul, especially singing a song he first recorded 52 years ago.
On the BBC News this morning, they mentioned Elton John, the Rolling Stones and Taylor Swift. No mention at all for Paul which kind of sums up how important he is viewed in the UK these days.

I think the problem most of the entertainers had during the show was that they were recording with their own home devices rather than professional sound equipment, so the sound quality wasn't what people were used to. Electronic keyboards don't seem to transmit well if a mike is further away. If he had used a regular piano instead of a keyboard, it might have balanced better (sound level wise) with his voice. But if there is any criticism, I think it should be with the quality of the home recording, not with Paul himself.
I thought Paul's introduction, especially in mentioning his Mum, was very moving, you can tell he was about to get a bit emotional. I felt his singing came from the heart, and appreciated his choice of song.
Can't forget to add that he looked great (love how he's styling his hair!) and was so good to see him! Paul and all the Beatles have always uplifted and inspired us, and I just appreciate all that he represents and stands for. I'm proud of him for taking part in this.

Loved your honesty Yankeefan. My wife and I got into a good movie that we hadn't seen before around 8:oo last night so I didn't see his performance on TV. Just saw it for the first time this morning. My sister did see it and sent me a text last night and she is very much like your wife. She loves Paul (although not the crazy Paul fan that I am) and she said his singing was terrible. That shocked me because my sister always sticks up for Paul. She and I saw Paul in 2002 and 2005 and she loved the shows. In essence, I knew what to expect when I finally watched the video on this site this morning.
Being such a big time Paul fan, I was very familiar with this arrangement of Lady Madonna. As others have said (and thanks for the person who posted the original arrangement here) I remember Paul doing this arrangement on the Chaos and Creation special (with a live audience) that he did. I always liked that arrangement because it was so different but as Nancy said, this was back from like 2006 when Paul's voice was still very good. So while I liked the arrangement, this is a case in my opinion where Paul is alone without his other band members covering up his current vocal abilities and really showing how bad his current voice really is. The other factor relative to Paul's performance last night is for people not familiar with Paul's current 70 year old plus voice is the "shock" of hearing how bad his current voice really is. Unfortunately not a good showing in general for Paul. I didn't see Paul's opening statements before he launched into the song, but it seems to have been very heartfelt so I will give Paul credit for being very authentic about this awful pandemic. In retrospect, however, I would have preferred Paul doing a "zoom" thing( like the Stones did) where all the band members would have been in the performance and most importantly his band members would have joined in the vocals and where Wix would have handled more of the music instruments to make it sound more professional. On one of my last posts here, I had said that I hoped Paul was going to go in that direction of having his band members participate but Paul went the total authentic route and there are definitely 2 sides of that story.
As far as the song choice, i think everybody here knows my feeling. Why do a song he has done a million times before when he has so many great Solo songs he could have done. Either one of the "hope" songs would have been great and more pertinent to this Global pandemis. I could go on forever about his song choices and i'm running out of time presentlyl.
