And now the" Uncut" reviewer (John Robinson) gives McCartney 3 a "9 out of 10". This is the 3rd review I have seen and I like the fact that different songs are singled out for being the best track on the album. In this case, this reviewer thinks that "Deep Deep Feeling" is the best track on McCartney 3 whereas a previous critic (Gwen Ihnat) thought that "Slidin" and/or Kiss of Venus were the best tracks. While John Robinson uses descriptions for McCartney 3 like strange, loose and experimental to point out the best things in McCartney 3, Gwen Ihnat in the other review spent more time talking about the album's good lyrics and Paul's metaphor of "birds and flight" that are prevalent in many of the songs. You don't know what you're going to get from the early reviews but it does sound very interesting. I does scare me that John Robinson considers McCartney 2 a "great" album, As "loose and experimental" as it is, I personally don't consider McCartney 2 to be a great album. I liked it better when I listened to the "archive/remastered treatment back in 2012 I believe, but I would never consider it in the same league as Chaos and Creation. Hopefully McCartney 3 is a combination of Chaos, McCartney 1 and Electric Arguments. We will see shortly.
BJ, can you or somebody else post the "Uncut" review. I tried to go to "Uncut" website and could not find the review.

The article that I had posted reviewed the album Mac 3.
I know. I was just posting something I found that had part of the interview of Paul from Uncut. I guess I should have just posted it separately.

Well, if Paul still consults John on lyric issues, he sometimes isn't getting good advice in return. With respect to the use of the mellatron, Paul said it was used on "Buffalo Bill." Wasn't the song about"Bungalo Bill....what did you kill...?"
I hope they misunderstood him and printed "Buffalo!"

Thank you for the link. I take a lot of notice of what Kenneth Womack says and although its just one mans opinion, I'm even more encouraged now that McCartney lll is going to be classic McCartney. And I like the way he describes it as a return to form too.

That is awesome review !! If the author is not some McCartney fanboy than I am really impressed with "McCartney III" prospects.

Hey Yankeefan...my concern was something similar. Is this a relative or fanboy type of McCartney fan? Is he really a professional critic. I see that Mr. Womack has a few books/publications about various and famous Beatles' including his latest book about George Martin. Let's hope it is a very fair and objective review on the album. Mr. Womack really liked the opening and closing album tracks along with other songs like "Seize the Day", "Find My Way", "Slidin" and of course "The Kiss of Venus". One would hope it's a good critic since "Salon" is a respectable company/media outlet.
If McCartney 3 is 80% as good as these early reviews, what a shot in the arm it will give Paul's Post Beatles and Solo Career.

BJ and Yankeefan, I met Ken Womack at the Aug. 2019 Fest For Beatles Fans in Chicago and spoke with him briefly after one of his talks (Lady Leslie was there too) He was only 4 years old when the Beatles broke up and I definitely wouldn't classify him as a "fanboy" but I'm sure he's a fan of their music.
You can see here he's written about 10 books about them, and a couple about George Martin.

Well, as I stated before, its just one persons opinion. But the fact that apparently he wasn't too impressed with Egypt Station (as I wasn't....as you probably all realise by now? ) but rates highly the new album, is a very positive sign for me personally. I think the other replies in this thread have covered Ken Womack's work. I have a few of his books, including 'Solid State' & 'John Lennon 1980', which I think are his latest publications. His books are well written, well researched and written with passion for their subject material.

BJ, I will really be interested in what the "Take It Away" guys think of "McCartney III".

Thanks Kestrel. You have given us some context about his critical opinion. He does not automatically just love anything McCartney releases so this review has added validity IMO.

Thanks for the information Nancy. The first two reviews I read here were very good but Mr. Womack's review was a full out "rave". I am always a bit skeptical when I read a glowing review or one that completey trashes the album. That is why I was wondering about his background and if he had history of overtly praising McCartney albums. Others may disagree with me but I trust the writers of Rolling Stone, they have been very fair with McCartney the last 25 years IMO. I mentioned to BJ in a post I will be interested in the guys from "Take It Away" podcast opinion of "McCartney III". I have grown to really love and respect their opinions of his solo work.

You wait, if I end up not liking McCartney lll, I'll do to Ken's books what Paul did to Philip Norman's Shout book !!!
-
Ken seemed to mention just a few of the songs from McCartney lll, and didn't go into much detail. He obviously considers it an excellent collection of songs, though. These good reviews make one want to hear it even more. Even a put down, calling the rockers on it "duds" as one critic did, make you want to hear it, to discover your own opinion and reaction, which might be very different.

Set it on fire? Or what?
This is interesting where Norman reveals why he said what he did about Paul in Shout:

Yeah, set it on fire......plus I have a pretty shrewd idea on how to put the flames out !!!
Nice link btw to Philip Norman's backtracking interview to promote his (then) new biography. To be honest I only read that book once (when it came out) and for some strange reason, I don't recall the anti-Paul bias, even though there must obviously have been one.

"Return to form" I'm so sick of reading that! I swear that I've read that quote on every album he's done in the past 15+ years. He hasn't lost his form, Chaos, MAF, NEW & ES have all been very good so I don't know why people are still surprised that he's still releasing good music! That or "Best album since (insert classic album"

I read your mind (and also on how you'd put the fire out!)
This was on Philip Norman's Wikipedia page:
Norman also recalled that he had heard that McCartney had taken to calling the book Shite!
Yeah, I only read Shout once when it came out and don't remember any of it! I have his other book about Paul, but haven't read it yet.

Apparently the McCartney lll album has been delayed a week until 18th December owing to manufacturing problems. But there is a train of thought now that it could be pushed back into the New Year. Hmmmm.
