McCartney 3?
-
I always root for Paul to have big hits and big albums. But at this point, he puts out albums to build his legacy and make music that he likes. He had a #1 album with Egypt Station in the US, a #1 album sales in the US with McCartney 3 (I believe it was just album sales and not streaming, etc.) and an #1 album in Great Britain with McCartney 3.
He is Paul McCartney. A genius. Just enjoy McCartney 3 and don't worry about the charts, etc. I listened to the album this morning on headphones for the first time in about five days (I had to go back to work) and the album sounded incredible. I could currently listen to Slidin for hours.
I have been most moved by all the covers of McCartney 3 songs on YouTube by young people.
-
Great post Thrillington. Like you, I love "Slidin". It has just the right amount of heavy guitars and I love Paul's vocals on that track.
-
Slidin was an instant like / love the song from McCartney III for me.
I want to listen to the album, I think about it - that is a good thing ...On first playings ... the Deep Deep songs seemed long.
Anything over 5 minutes seemed long. Now I found myself walking around one day singing that deep deep feeling ... I have enjoyed playing this album while doing other things as an accompaniment to tasks at hand.Enjoy.

Third week in the US Billboard chart, McCartney lll is already down at #90 having entered at #2 and then dropping to #37 in its second week. I think that's a real great shame as its a very good album and deserved to be selling more copies over a longer period.

I agree but that is the reality of an older artist trying to sell new albums. You could not have asked for better publicity for this album. Excellent critical reviews, he was on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine and had late night appearance on "The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon". Personally, I love his video for "Find My Way" but the 2.7 million views is not very good in compared to younger performers who get 20-40 million views. His fan base is old and he will not get young people to buy his albums. Young people will think it is cool to see a "Beatle" in concert but could care less about his solo songs. The biggest shame to me is that all these older "Beatle Paul" fans that attend his concerts probably have not bought any of his music since he left the Beatles. While like you, I was rooting for longer stay on the charts I will just have to be satisfied with critical acclaim.

I agree! Especially about the Beatle Paul fans. I was at a soundcheck & met two 50ish gals. They never heard ANY of his songs that were from the last 30 years. Unbelievable.

When it comes down to it, McCartney III will be remembered for the cover and article in Rolling Stone, and for it placing #1, when searching for it in the future. I would have also liked to see it in the charts longer, however, it got the recognition, most people like/love all the songs. Most are really loving it and we did get some cool merch from it! I LOVE ️ my cap and dice! Paul is in lockdown again, and it looks like he’s stuck in St. Bart’s with Nancy and not his instruments. Not a bad place for a ROCKDOWN!

There was a review (of one of Paul's live albums) in Record Collector in the late 80's / early 90's where the reviewer observed that although Paul can still sell out concerts around the world, very few of those attending would think of buying his latest studio album...or live album. To a greater or lesser extent, Paul has had this problem for the last 30 years.
Maybe he needs to scale back his promotional activities (ie no tv appearances) in the future and just let the album sell on its own musical merit? If nothing else, at least the 'Beatle Paul' fans won't be reminded just how old he has become and it might even create a bit of 'mystique'?
I note that after a busy few weeks, these boards have quietened down again over the last few days.

Not surprised it is quiet now. Many reviews have been posted and no need for more, think we know album is critical success. People were anticipating what the songs would be like and now we know and have discussed in detail what we like or dislike. I don't see a new tour happening so it will probably be pretty quiet for some time.

Yes Kestrel, it is a "real great shame". As one of the reviews said (think it was Guardian) "the best McCartney songs in years".
As I have stated before, I'm no expert on "Singles" and on all the various charts but it may be a huge mistake for Capitol and MPL not to release a physical "single" for McCartney 3. With so much other "news" a true great album is being lost to the masses. Yes, true Paul fans have bought the album but the younger "music" fans especially aren't hearing the songs.
Personally, I think the album is brilliant. Once I started hearing many of the songs I've been hooked to the point when I get up in the morning I have to hear many of the tracks. The last few days I have been forced to go out (Doctor appointments etc) and I purposely have been listening to my biggest FM radio "music and hits" channels, and I have yet to hear "Find My Way" or any McCartney 3 song on commercial radio. Now I only live in the Tampa Florida area (big metro area for sure) so I don't know that this is true widespread but I suspect it is.
Without an actual single being released for "Find My Away" it is not making its way to commercial FM radio. Obviously Capitol and MPL released a "music video" for "Find My Way" but that doesn't appear to be enough. I remember when Egypt Station was released, Capitol did release a double sided single ("Come On To Me" and "I Don't Know"). Commercial radio overwhelmingly picked "Come On To Me" and that song did fairly well making its way on the charts and thus giving a sales boost to Egypt Station. On top of that, Paul and his band shortly after started touring and they played "Come On to Me" at every show.
Now it is a totally different time. No physical single has been released for McCartney 3 and because of Covid, Paul can't go on tour. Personally I think "Find My Way" is a much better song than "Come On To Me" but unfortunately the song and album is disappearing. I think the video for "Find My Way" is excellent but at this point and without a physical single, the song isn't getting any general airplay. As far as i know, "Find My Way" hasn't made any Billboard charts.
I know I'm a huge fan and I think certain tracks are just made for commercial radio. In my opinion, "Find My Way" and "Seize the Day" are perfect songs for Top 40/Hits radio stations and that as Kestrel says is a "great shame". This is one of Paul's best albums in my opinion and it contains a bunch of songs that are very radio friendly. I would add" Pretty Boys" and "Kiss of Venus" to potential "singles" list. On top of that, a song like "Slidin" would be perfect for "rock stations" that play more "heavier metal" formats.
As I said, I'm not a "radio singles" expert but right now McCartney 3 is disappearing from the ears of music and non-Paul McCartney fans. It just seems to me that Capitol and Paul has to release at least one or two "singles" to get the songs heard. "Find My Way" is the obvious 1st choice. It has a Beatles and Wings sound but it has a modern sound at the same time. General music fans (including many in the younger demographic) are not going to go to Spotify or Pandora to specificlly find a Paul McCartney channel unless they start actually hearing "Find My Way". I don't really know the "costs" involved with Capitol releasing and distributing a single but at this point just the "music video" isn't producing radio airplay or hitting the various radio chart formats (e.g. Top 40, Adult Contemporary, Rock, Easy Listening etc) so something has to be done in my opinion. If anyone has an opinon or suggestion, please let the rest of us know. Thanks

Imagine it's during the Beatles' heyday and Frank Sinatra released a critically acclaimed album. It...or nothing from it....would be played on a Top 40 station. I don't know if back then there were that many charts or stations devoted to spotllighting his music or the music of other stars of his age. I would not have sought him or them out. That's the story with Paul. I believe Tony Bennett got a bit of airplay when he teamed up with....can't think of her name.....Lady Gaga??...so, I guess it's possible. I mean the song of Paul's that is most downloaded is "Four Five Seconds." That's not because of his presence or involvement, but that of Rhianna and Kanye. Paul's involvement with Michael Jackson in the mid to late 80's bought him some airplay, or more than he likely would have gotten otherwise at that point. That's where he and we are. (Going back to Egypt Station, I believe there was a better chance of his possibly getting some airplay with "Who Care's" and "Happy With You." as his leadoff two-sided single. They sounded more like the Paul Mccartney people might have listened to....a catchy and relatable sing-along (Beatelsesque) and a gorgeous ballad that people associate with him. They both had strong hooks. And he sounded much better on those two than the two he selected....in my opinion. )

Common Capitol Records...SEIZE THE DAY!
Just to add to my previous post. McCartney 3 needs to release a "physical single". To quote lyrics from one of the best songs on McCartney 3 "Seize the Day"....."When the cold days come and the Old Days fade away, there'll be no more sun and we'll wish we had held on to the day, Seize the Day, Seize the Day."
Capitol Records needs to "Seize the Day"and release the first single to this amazing Album. "Find the Way" as the first single and then possibly Seize the Day as the follow-up. Come on Capitol Records... get the single out and see how it does!

Great points Beatles4Ever.
Regarding Egypt Station, you could argue about which ES song was the best to issue as a Single. When the double sided physical single was released by Capitol Records before Egypt Station was released, radio chose to play "Come On To You" over "I Don't Know". The key is that "Come On To Me" did its job. It made the charts for a couple of month and made it to # 7 or 8 I believe. I think it made the charts on Billboard's Contemporary Adullt Format. It was successful and was played on many American FM Radio stations. THE PROBLEM HERE AND NOW IS THAT CAPITOL RECORDS HASN'T ISSUED ANY MCCARTNEY 3 SONG AS A PHYSICAL SINGLE FOR RADIO. Personally I think "Find My Way" is the best choice off McCartney 3 but I just want to see at least one song from McCartney 3 issued as a "Single". Apparently that is your best chance for getting "airplay" on commercial FM radio.
As I said before, I'm not an expert so please respond if you have any incite on what Capitol Records should do. At this point it doesn't seem that in the US, McCartney 3 is getting little or zero airplay on free FM radio.
Thanks

While "Come On To Me" did make the charts, I don't think it really helped "Egypt Station much because it did not sell well at all. I would have to look again but I believe it sold only 230,000 copies in the US which is much less than CHAOS or MAF. Releasing "Find My Way" can't hurt any and I think it is always good to do something to keep your album in the news so to speak. I agree with you that "Find My Way" is a better song than "Come On To Me" which I think could have used some editing, last 30-45 seconds were very repitious IMO.

Actually, in 1966 Frank Sinatra had a hit album and single (That's Life) which was a top 5 chart hit in the Beatles heyday and the single was played constantly on the radio.

He also did "My Way" in 1969 which made it to #2 on U.S. Billboard Adult Contemporary chart.

Hey Yankeefan..
I just saw a Youtube video of Paul and Band performing "Come On To Me" live on the Jimmy Fallon Tonight Show soon after Egypt Staton was released. It's really funny after Jimmy Fallon greets the guys after they just performed the song. Vocally, I thought this live performance was better than the studio/album version. One of the few times that Paul really nailed it on a "live" TV appearance.
Jimmy Fallon is such a fanboy but his enthusiasm with singing with Paul was so contagious. Loved it when Jimmy falls down at the very end but still holds on to the album. He also got his band "The Roots" involved. Classic video in my opinion.
Can you put this video on this Site. I'm sure the fans here would love to see it.

I stand corrected. I guess radio was more flexible then......Today stations have about 15 songs that they play over and over....on FM Radio. I believe Top 40 is now Top 20, moe or less. I now listen to Serius XM, Alternative Rock, and even they tend to have a somewhat limited list of songs that are played over and over. And, as you pointed out about Sinatra, I believe Louis Armstrong had a song that replaced a Beatles' song at the top at some point. So.....there probably were fewer stations and a bit more flexibility in what they could or would play. With respect to comments on "Come On To Me," I believe Paul should have ended it just before he starts saying ".....Yes, I will, yes I will.....", and then proceeds to repeat the "If you come on to me, then I'll come on to you..". It became very annoying to me. I actually deleted the song from my version of the album at one point because I just could not listen to it.

Totally agree with you on your comments about "Come On To Me" being annoying at the end and needed to be shortened.
