McCartney III Single

Just heard a Youtube review on McCartney 3 from a guy name Matthew Sweet. You should be able to find it for yourself on Youtube if you so desire. He had 2 reviews of McCartney 3 on Youtube, but this was his 2nd and longer one after he received a higher "quality" leak of the album from one of his listeners. This is just one person's opinion and if you're one of those fans that only wants to hear the album" first" with your own ears rather than hearing someone else's opinion than I would refrain from reading any further. I just can't wait another 20 days so I am reading/hearing as many reviews as I can.
First of all, seeing this guy talking about the album on Youtube, he doesn't seem like the "fanboy" type at all. He seems fair and is not afraid to make sincere criticisms. At the same time, he is not a McCartney hater and says that he appreciates his entire career from the Beatles all the way till today. He also considers Paul's current vocals as part of his Album Grades.
Overall he gives McCartney 3 at final verdict of B. Unlike Kenneth Womack he doesn't believe that McCartney 3 is one of Paul's best Post Beatles' albums period. He's kept his individaul "track" Grades simple. He didn't feel any of the songs deserved a "F" and he only gives 1 or 2 songs an "A or A minus Grade. On the majority of songs, he gave a "B". As I said, overall he felt McCartney 3 deserved a B.
Here was the track by track rundown:
Long Tailed Winter Bird - "B" Mainly an instrumental song he liked this opening track and felt that Paul was mainly going back to his roots. He likened this track as he said from some strange reason to the "Sun Sessions" from some of the early rock pioneers in the 50's.
Find My Way - "B" He called this one a modern sounding tracks...upbeat, quirky and he liked it
Pretty Boys - "C" or "C" minus - Basically an acoustical piece but he didn't like this one vocally and thought it's one of his weakest vocals on the album
Women's and Wives "C" - Piano based song that Matthew compared to "I Don't Know" from Egypt Station but not as good. He called the lyrics pretty boring in general.
Lavatory Lil "B" - He liked this one better and described it as a good, raw and upbeat rocker. He loved Paul's Guitar playing here.
Slidin "A minus" - he called this one a "kick ass" rock and roll song with good bass and guitar work.
Deep Deep Feeling "B minus" - Despite its length, he liked Paul's guitar fills and the overall vibe.
Kiss of Venus "B" - He liked this one but said you have to get used to Paul's vocals. He loves the melody and it sticks with you.
Seize the Day "C plus" - he felt this track was the most Beatleque on the album and that the message is nice.
Deep Down "D plus" - this was his least favorite track and he particularly didn't like the drums/percussion part of it. While it was more in the "soul pop" category, he didnt feel it was particularly smoothe in the execution.
Winter Bird/When Winter Comes "B" - While he liked the track he didn't like the transition part between the 2 songs, He felt the transition was too abrupt. He did like the 2nd part of the song quite a lot and liked the way Paul helped the album lyrically go full circle.
Not that I'm going to base my final opinion of McCartny 3 on this man's opinion (I'll leave that to my own ears) I have to say that Mr. Sweet's review was more realistic than some of the other early reviews I have read. He's not calling McCartney 3 one of his best Post Beatles' albums and he ended up giving it a "B"grade. I think it did help me to be more realistic from an "expectations" point of view. In reality, this is probably what I should expect from an album by Sir Paul at this late stage of his long and illustrious career. Also, like the other albums of this ilk (McCartney and McCartney 2) this album is rather "homemade" in its development with just Paul and a couple of engineers in the studio. I don't think it should necessarily be compared to Band on the Run, Tug of War or Chaos and Creation in the Backyard just to name a few. And it is pretty diifficult to compare McCartney 3 vocally to those earlier albums either.
Like most of us, I can't wait to hear McCartney 3 but at this point I'm not waiting for the greatest Paul album of all time. I'm just hoping for a "good" album considering all of these circumstances especially given his age and how many years he has been touring.
I am at the point of not reading any morer reviews, got general idea what I think the album will be like. Now, it is just a matter of listening to it a few times before writing an opinion of it.

I hear you Yankeefan. Just wish we didn't have to wait as long at this point.
While I think this guy was being very honest, I'm hoping I like Mccartney 3 a little better than he did. I'm not expecting a "great" or close to perfect album like a couple of the reviewers have insinuated , I'm hoping to like a half dozen of the songs a lot and in general better than the good ones that Mr. Sweet liked. In reality, he only gave 1 song an "A" and that was an "A minus". He wasn't even "over the moon" on "Slidin" his highest graded song. On the positive side, he did say he liked a good number of the tracks and on those he gave mostly "B" like ratings. It's not like I've read or heard this guy before. Maybe he's an understated type of reviewer/critic and he doesn't get over excited about music/songs in general. As we both have said, we just have to be patient and wait to hear McCartney 3 ourselves.

If I am going to pay attention to reviews, I usually care about what Rolling Stone says about the album. I find them to be very fair and while positive for the most part the last 25 years, they will call out when a song is "garbage". I truly believe the album is going to be what you are hoping for, mostly good songs and maybe a clunker or two. I am sure there will also be a vocal or two we wish could have been better but we will understand he is 78. Like you, this type of album I am not expecting a classic.

Well said Yankeefan.

Well, "Find My Way" is a hoot. Looking forward to the rest of the album.

Some notes on that video!
"The official music video for Paul McCartney’s ‘Find My Way’. Directed by Roman Coppola, the shoot utilized no less than 46 cameras to capture Paul on every instrument and from every angle, resulting in an unprecedented and intimate glimpse into Paul creating and performing a ‘McCartney III’ highlight."

Now that McCartney 3 has been out for a week and it already has reached #1 without the benefit of a "Single" what does Paul and Capitol need to do to keep the momentum going for the next 3 months. What "Single" or Singles need to be released to help McCartney 3 increase its sales.
I'm no expert when it comes to "Singles" (I'll leave that to someone like Bruce) but here are my thoughts:
Again I'm far from an expert, but I think this should be the strategy:
#1 I think Paul and Capitol should immediatel release "Find My Way"-- It's the most commercial track on McCartney. I like the fact that it sounds modern and it is definitely catchy. It's fast but has experimental sides as well. Paul's singing is first rate and his older voice doesn't hurt the track and at the same time "Find My Way" will still appeal to Paul Solo and Wing's fans.
#2 Right after "Find My Way" does it job, Paul and Capitol should release "Pretty Boys" as the 2nd single. It'also very "catchy" tells a good story with the clever lyrics. Finally it could help capture the "Gay Community"portion of the market as well.
#3 At the same time Paul and Capitol are releasing "Find My Way and "Pretty Boys"as singles, they should release "Deep Down" as a secondary "single" for the "younger" audience. This demographic also likes R&B, Hip Hop and even rap. This is a separate target market for Paul's customary Beatle/Wings demographic

Just saw an update indicating McCartney III will likely be number one in the U.S. as well as U.K. What an incredible accomplishment! And the track Find My Way absolutely deserves to be a bona fide hit single on the Hot 100 chart . The "you never used to be afraid of days like these.." line in the chorus sounds like late 1970s Paul, just fantastic, best thing I've heard on a Paul single since the "Now that I'm alone again..."chorus on My Brave Face.

The last few mornings Ihave been waking up around 6:00 am for a hunger to play McCartney 3. One thing I've realized even more is how different McCartney 3 is from McCartney 2 and McCartney 1. As I said, I think McCartney 3 is far better than McCartney 2 and it is more complete than McCartney 1. McCartney 1 which I really liked had in my opinion like 3 full songs...Maybe I'm Amazed (prehaps his best Solo song), Every Night and Junk. But this latest album (McCartney has 11 songs and they are all complete songs.
After fully digesting McCartney 3, I'm thinking that there may be as many as 6 or7 potential singles. Similar to when Michael Jackson released Thriller. Michael's record company just kept on releasing new singles every 3 months or so that really milked the album and made it into the biggest selling album of all time. I'm not comparing McCartney 3 to Thriller but this is Paul's chance to have a Solo album that has real "legs". Hopefully Capitol will make all the right moves.
I have to admit that I don't understand the economics with singles and how much they cost for the record company. But I do understand the marketing side. Here are some of my additional thoughts:
1. Find My Way - should definitely be the 1st single. It is the most commercial of all the tracks and has the widest audience. The track appeals to Beatle and Wings fans but because of how modern sounding it is, it can appeal to the younger demographic.
2. Prretty Boys - in my mind this would be the 2nd single for many of the same reasons as "Find My Way". It's very catchy and can appeal to the younger audience.
3. Slidin - This could potentially be a 3rd single because it specifically appeals to younger music fans that like "heavier metal" songs and bands. This is Paul's Solo Helter Skelter but in my mind even better. My question is....Can Paul and the Record company put out a single that appeals to this "target audience".
4. Kiss of Venus - This could potentially be Paul's 3rd "wide base/ Top 40" type single. It has continued to grow with me because of its commercial sound.
5. Deep Down - Similar to "Slidin" this track might be a potential single could appeal to younger music radio stations that market to the younger crowd that like R&B, Hip Hop and even Rap. "Deep Down" as a single might have to be edited down to 3-4 minutes but Paul's vocal sounds very soulful with R& B music touches that including great horns.
6. Seize the Day - This could potentially be the 6th single from McCartney 3. It really has the most Beatleque sound on the Album coupled with great bits of modern sound.
Anyway, I would appreciate any feedback from Bruce or others that understand the "Singles" market much better than me. Does McCartney 3 have this many potential singles as I have described above?
Thanks

I know nothing about the "singles" market and I will defer to others expertise. In my 60 yr old mind, it is no brainer that "Find My Way" would be the first single. I would actually move "Seize The Day" to the second single. I am not a big fan of "Pretty Boys" yet like many others. As much as I love "Slidin", I don't think younger audience today is in to "Heavier Metal" sound. From what I can tell from my two thirty something daughters, it is all about hip hop and people like Taylor Swift or Adele. If there was third single, I would make it "Kiss Of Venus". This song has a better chance to hook in young and older audience. Like I stated, I don't know the "singles" market. I am just giving opinion.

Thanks for the imput Yankeefan. I totally agree with you on "Find My Way"...love the song and easily the most commercial song on McCartney 3. I probably like "Pretty Boys" better than you. Love the production and it sounds Beatlesque to my ears. I also love the lyrics. This is why I see it as probably the 2nd single but like you I also love "Seize the Day". "Seize the Day" in my opinion is the most beatlesque song on McCartney 3 so that would certainly be a contender. I also like "Kiss of Venus" as another "single" possibility. At first I wasn't crazy about Paul's vocal but it has grown with be and I love the "bridges" in the song as well as the harpsichord.
I'm hoping that Bruce joins in this conversation. He seems to know the "singles and radio " market far better than me. Just thinking about the different "radio" formats, I'n pretty sure they're plenty of stations that try to appeal to the "metal" market as well as the Hip Hop/Rap markets and that is where "Slidin" and a song like "Deep Down" might fit.
As I said, this album might have "legs" than any album that Paul has released over the last 20 years or so. Part of it is because McCartney 3 has so many diverse music styles. It is far better than McCartney 1 or McCartney 2 in my opinion.

Now that we're now into 2021 I will be very interested in seeing the strategies of Capitol (Paul's record company) for marketing McCartney 3.
First things first, I think most fans here would agree that "Find My Way" should be the first single promoted heavily to commercial radio. I like "Find My Way" for the first song to be heavily promoted by Capitol to FM Radio for these reasons:
1. In my opinion, Find My Way is the most commercial/ Top 40 sounding song on McCartney 3.
2. It has a "modern" sound to hook the biggest market...young people
3. It sounds like a Paul McCartney record so it sounds Beatleque and Wings-ish at the same time.
4. Paul's voice sound good as compared to some of the other songs on McCartney 3 where to many he sounds old.
5. I love the "middle" part of the song where Paul sings in his high register voice and he sounds good.
6. Love, love the false ending and the "playout ending of the song". It's just the instrumental portion with nice modern touches during the ending.
Something where I'm always interested:
HAS ANYONE IN THEIR SPECIFIC AREA HEARD "FIND MY WAY" ON ONE OF THEIR LOCAL RADIO CHANNELS OR HAVE THEY HEARD "FIND MY WAY" ON ONE OF THE "PLAYLISTS" IN THEIR LOCAL SUPERMARKET OR CONVENIENCE STORE. THAT IS EXACTLY "CAPITOL'S" JOB TO GET MCCARTNEY 3 SONGS HEARD TO ORDINARY PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD. THIS WILL BE THE "KEY" FOR MCCARTNEY 3 TO HAVE "LEGS" AND CONTINUE SELLING ON A BEST- SELLER BASIS. IT's AS SIMPLE AS THAT BUT IT IS EASIER SAID THAN DONE. HIT SONGS GETTING RADIO AND RETAIL EXPOSURE IS THE "KEY"for Capitol and Paul.

Nearly every track is worthy of a single release, McCartney lll really is that good. Personally I would go with Slidin' first or perhaps a slighted edited Deep Down. It really is difficult to choose.

Thanks Kestrel. Have you been away, I haven't seen you here lately.
You have ESP. I was thinking of both those tracks...Slidin and Deep Down. I agree with you that many McCartney 3 tracks have "single" potential although I have been a little surprised on Maccaboard as several regulars have espressed a little disappointed with the new album.
Just out of the gate with McCartney 3, I was thinking that Capitol's first choice would have more of a broader sound like "Find My Way". But I love Slidin for select audiences who like a more heavy metal type playlist. I also really like "Deep Down" for more the R&B, soul groove type audience. On "Deep Down" I agree that the album version would have to be edited. I love the beginning of "Deep Down" and the last couple of minutes even more when Paul really rocks out vocally. You know the "I want to talk with you, I want to be with you parts.
My question for you...could Capitol do these 3 tracks simultaneously. That might be the best strategy and then follow up the broad based track "Find My Way" with "Pretty Boys" or "Seize the Day"on the next round.
I'm glad you really like McCartney 3. I was getting a little worried with a few of the recent responses.

Can't help you much on this BJ since I rarely listen to the radio, I only listen to the radio on short drives (30-45) minutes around the city. Any longer type car trip, plug my IPOD in and listen to playlists I have created. The radio station I do listen to is "The Fox" which is classic rock station and I don't believe they play any new songs from classic rock artists. In the COVID times we are living in, going to stores less and having more stuff delivered or car pickup after ordering online. The place I got my haircut yesterday did have music on but I did not hear anything from "McCartney III". Hopefully others will let you know but my gut feeling is you are not going to hear it being played much or at all..

I've only heard a couple of his new songs on WXRT Chicago's Breakfast with the Beatles.
