McCartney III Single

I've only heard a couple of his new songs on WXRT Chicago's Breakfast with the Beatles.

Pretty much the same for me Yankeefan relative to radio. Because both cars of ours no longer have CD players, I am getting to hear regular FM radio a little more on short errand typt trips. I've been turning on Top 40 type stations in the Tampa market but so far I've not heard anything from McCartney 3. Like you, we've been doing more pick-ups frm Walmart and Publix, so we're not in the stores as much to hear the playlists. When my wife is driving she's not too keen on the radio so we're normally listening to either different Spotify or Pandora playlists. Just like you, i'm not the best judge. The best thing for me is looking at USA Today's paper. Normally on Friday (and maybe other days of the week) they have radio charts wieth the most popular songs from different types of playlists. Maybe an easier way is to just go on-line from someone like Billboard that probably listst the best selling songs per radios genres. Do you do that?

Thanks Kestrel. Have you been away, I haven't seen you here lately.
You have ESP. I was thinking of both those tracks...Slidin and Deep Down. I agree with you that many McCartney 3 tracks have "single" potential although I have been a little surprised on Maccaboard as several regulars have espressed a little disappointed with the new album.
My question for you...could Capitol do these 3 tracks simultaneously. That might be the best strategy and then follow up the broad based track "Find My Way" with "Pretty Boys" or "Seize the Day"on the next round.
I have cut back on my time on-line in general so I'm only on these boards for about 5 to 10 minutes a day. That's not long enough to read all the posts let alone reply or post comments.
McCartney lll seems very much a marmite album so either you 'get it' and can enjoy it or you 'don't get it' and be disappointed. I just love it though and constantly feel compelled to play it several times a day, every day. The album feels very organic and very alive, in a way that the clinically lightweight Egypt Station never did.
I'm not sure singles are of any importance these days unfortunately. I haven't bought any for years as I don't download on-line and would only be interested in a physical cd single, which isn't going to happen nowadays. I'm not convinced a single release would gain the album any more airplay as most radio stations tend to pick and run with the tracks of their own choosing. Unfortunately I can see McCartney lll plummeting down the charts in the next few weeks and that it will end up being Paul's poorest selling album globally. To avoid that stigma it will need to sell more than the 500,000 units that Egypt Station shifted.

Hi there! I wanted to get back on the question whether I hear songs from Mccartney lll on the radio here (in the Netherlands) and actually I do! I heard Find my way several times. I also heard Deep deep feeling which was introduced really nice. And I heard Women and Wives once. All on the same radio station btw. I’m sure I will hear it more often the next weeks.
I don’t think that any accoustic type song will appeal to a large (new) audience. I’d say that Slidin’ has the most potential to do so. It sounds fresh and heavy and that alone can get some real attention because a lot of people still think of Paul as the guy with all those silly, mellow love songs.

I never really follow the charting of his albums/singles after the initial release and the only way I know how well it has done is if it is news story or on this board. Since you mentioned Billboard, I thought I would take a look and sadly "McCartney III" is already down to #37. I think it will be two weeks at most before it will be out of the top 100. It just seems new McCartney albums at this point can only have good first week or two and then fade away quickly. I wish it was different but it is what it is -lol. As for radio play, I don't know anything really about the market and what type of station would play a new McCartney song. I will be interested if you or somebody else provide some info just because I am curious.

I just think Europe is more receptive to playing new McCartney music than the US and glad to know you are hearing it on radio.

Yeah! I must say I really am thrilled everytime I hear one on the radio! It’s because it’s so rare to hear one of his solo songs spontaneously on the radio. Most of the time you put his music on by yourself. Besides that, it feels like some kind of appreciation when his music gets played on the radio and I think he really deserves that.

Thanks for the feedback Dennis. So happy to hear that McCartney 3 is being played in the Netherlands. I'm hoping that a few of the new songs will be played soon on general radio and retail playlists (e.g. Top 40 stations) in the US, Canada and Great Britain. I think that McCartney 3 has several songs with mass appeal like Find My Way, Slidin, Seize the Day, Pretty Boys, The Kiss of Venus and Deep Down.

Kestrel...Thanks for the imput. I know this Site is an extremely "small sample" but McCartney 3 does seem to have a "get it" or "don't get it" type of feeling so far. The ones here that like the new album really like it. At the same time, quite a few others (e.g. Beatle Paul fans) seem disappointed.
I'm hoping that Bruce joins this discussion about "Singles". He seems to know a whole lot more about "singles" than I do. I agree with you that McCartney 3 does have more "mass appeal"than other recent Paul Solo albums. I still have hope that McCartney 3 won't plummet down the charts in a few weeks. Has there been any announcement that Capitol is definitely releasing a "single". And I would be very curious what the b-sides would be. Hey Bruce..give us the latest facts here.

Just thought I would share this information, see attached link. See how badly "New" and "Egypt Station" sold in the US compared to MAF and CHAOS. I have a bad feeling "McCartney III" is going to have the same type of sales as the last two albums. Does radio play or single help artist like McCartney anymore? I am thinking about his demographic which I am in and nobody really listens to the radio anymore. As for younger people, my daughters are in their early 30's and while they seemed to like a few songs off "McCartney III" when they heard some of it, I could never imagine them buying the album.I guess we will see in the very near future.
BJ - "McCartney III" has already dropped to #37 in the billboard charts.

Hey Yankeefan,
McCartney 3 dropping so fast (to #37) is really disappointing. I wouln't been surprised if it went down to #15 or even #20 but that drop so quickly was a surprise to me. Anyway now it really depends on whether any McCartney single (probably Find My Way) starts getting decent general radio and/or retail airplay.
I still haven't gotten an answer to my queston...Has Capitol announced that an actual "Find My Way" single is being released.

I think I answered my own question by just doing a little research. Looking up McCartney 3 and "Find My Way" single, they said that "while there is no single release for Find My Way, the song is being given a single-like treatment where Capitol has already issued a promotional music video of "Find My Way" directed by Roman Coppola.
Assuming that it is quite expensive for Capitol to release a "physical" Find My Way single, I can only think that the chances of hearing "Find My Way" on general commercial FM radio stations has been greatly diminished. My guess that probably in a joint decision, Capitol and MPL are very satisfied with all the pre-release promotion they have recieved for McCartney 3 and that an actual physical "single" release would be like wasting money in the possible hope that it would sinificantly increase additional album sales. They are already getting plenty of publicity with all the hype that McCartney 3 has received via all the music videos they have already made and available for commercial TV and "steaming" services. I'm certainly no expert but I'm not expecting to hear on a mass basis many McCartney 3 songs being played on commercial radio or retail playlists at least in the US. Just my guess. Anyone who knows more or wants to correct anything I have said, please feel free to comment. Thanks

BJ - I checked on youtube and the official video of "Find My Way" got over 2.4 million views and 83 comments. In today's world, that is probably better than releasing a single that may get played once or twice a day on a radio station. BTW - the video is really good IMO.

Thanks Yankeefan. I'm not an expert on Singles (as we have both said) but it probably costs more than we think. In Paul's and MPL's Case, they don't have to pay a lot of money to "buy" commercial radio airplay so I understand why Capitol and MPL don't want to come out with "physical" singles especially when they are getting tons of free publicity on McCartney 3. Just this morning I saw another great review on McCartney 3 in a Harrisburg PA newspaper. That was free compared to Capitol and MPL spending a lot of money creating or buying "physical singles" to try to get radio stations to play McCartney 3.
I would love McCartney 3 songs to be played on commercial FM radio stations but on the good side I think it is better that songs like "Find My Way" don't get overplayed like Ebony and Ivory and Say Say Say did. In my opinion, McCartney 3 is a great album and I would rather see it not overplayed.

Whilst I truly love every song, Find My Way (and that great video) and The Kiss of Venus are my top faves this week...the harpsichord gives them a great sound IMHO.
Also liking Deep Down and it's boozy party atmosphere (great video too)
When Winter Comes is also a favorite as it harkens back to happy times, down on the farm and family memories. I also love the acoustic Winter Bird reprise that transitions with the drawn out pipe organ chord. Cool It even ties up the album with a happy ending, where winter is over and the family flies away into the sun. A great ending in typical Paul style, winter time can be rough and so keep your thoughts on the hopes for the future and sunny days that will be returning. Quite apropos for these times...and something for us to hold on to.
I really love the new video for this song as well, very well done, even to the windmill on the hill and the sheepdog. Did Paul and Linda have a Clydesdale horse? Really loved how they held hands and flew into the sun at the end.

I agree with you totall on McCartney 3. Love all the songs you mentioned. I think the album has very good variety. I'm not a big lover of the heavier metal genre but I also love "Slidin". I think it has just the right amount of the solo electric guitar. Great song in my opinioin. Like the lyrics and Paul's singing as well.

Not to my knowledge, mostly Appaloosas. Have seen other horses (perhaps Quarter horses) in music videos. I used to have a beautiful sorrel (chestnut) colored Quarter horse in 1992/1993.

2.7 million YouTube views is not a lot. Taylor Swift's "Willow," released Dec. 10, is over 47 million, and top-selling artists sometimes get hundreds of millions of views.
As for radio, it can certainly help, though it's no doubt a smaller factor than in pre-internet days. Find My Way has in fact been promoted to radio and has gotten modest pickup on Triple A format stations, but it's not exactly burning up the airplay charts. And it seems like the publicity has mostly stopped, so that's probably it.
I'm actually not surprised. As I'm pretty sure I said before, this is typical for older artists: With decent publicity, the old fanbase turns out to buy it the first week, then things drop off. Such is life. Count all the other artists over age 75 who still have albums chart in the top 5.

They had a Shetland Pony (I think) in the living room picture with young Stella and Mary on the horse and Paul leaning over them. Recently saw a photo of Beautiful stables that they had at a weekend home. There were 9-10 stalls. They must have had numerous horses at that time.

Hey Bruce...so glad you're back. You're our "Singles' guru compared to most of us. I google McCartney 3 most every day and they said that Capitol has not released a physical "Single" for Find My Way but they are giving "Find My Way" a "single-like treatment" issuing a music vidio for Find My Way directed by Roman Coppola.
Does not issuing a formal single really hurt "Find My Way" chances of getting on the charts or getting any consistent radio airplay. I remember "Come On To Me" doing pretty well on the charts when Egypt Station was released. Now that McCartney 3 is starting to drop down the album charts pretty quickly, does not having a "single" really speed the process.
In googling McCartney 3, I still see very favorable reviews on McCartney 3. Just yesterday I saw 2 (one from the Pittsburgh area and one from Oregon) and that always helps but these free reviews are not going to last too long. The critics have been very positive on the album but I would think it needs some "chart" action. What do you think?
