PAUL SOLO/POST BEATLES' ANTHOLOGY

B J, please don't cut No More Lonely Nights!! Beautiful song - who cares if it was on Pure McCartney?!
I agree and Paul hasn't played it to death on all his various tours. Vocally, I don't think he could do it anymore and "Radio"in general doesn't play it much either. Always loved David Gilmour's guitar solo.

Recently when I have been visiting Youtube / Paul McCartney, I've been seeing the video of Paul's great "Wanderlust" song but with the "Broad Street" movie version. Instead of the whole Medley (Yesterday, Wanderlust and Here There and Everywhere) where Paul and Ringo do the medley, Youtube just plays "Wanderlust". Not that the original studio version of "Wanderlust" on Tug of War isn' t great, I actually like the "Broad Street" vocal a little better. Paul's lead vocal is slightly "softer" (not as harsh) and I absolutely love the "Here There & Everywhere" snippet in the end. It's just the very brief melody part. Even though this proposed New Paul Solo Compilation is definitely a Post Beatles' idea, I just love that little snippet of one of Macca's greatest melodies. It's is the kind of thing that imo would be great on an Up-to-Date Compilation. It's the kind of surprise that big McCartney fans would really appreciate and you wouln't be hearing the same studio version that is on "Pure McCartney". Just a thought and have you seen the Youtube video of the "Broad Street" version.
Thanks for pointing this one out. I had seen this before but I think only once a long time ago because I didn't really like the Broad Street movie. I mostly just listen to the Broad Street soundtrack for the songs that aren't on other albums (like No More Lonely Nights).
This is definitely a great version of Wanderlust. And I do like the Here There and Everywhere snippet at the end very much, it fits in well and would be good as a subtle Beatles reference that still leaves the focus on Paul's solo song.
I'm actually kind of surprised that I do like this little snippet because I generally don't like that kind of thing. For instance I wish that the album version of Picasso's Last Words didn't include the snippets of Jet and Mrs Vandebilt. I like all three songs individually, but I usually think including bits of other songs detracts from the main song.
But in this case with Wanderlust I actually think it works really well, and it would be a good idea to include this version in a compilation instead of the TOW version.
Thanks McCall. I really love that little snippet of "Here There & Everywhere" too. It works really well to my ears. As you say, it's very suble and doesn't seem forced in any way. George Martin did really have a good ear.
Something similar and more current. I really like the way Paul begins the last track of McCartney 3 "When Winter Comes." That little snippet of "Winter Bird" works great too. It takes you back to the beginning of the album. In reality the opening track is a little long for my tase but on the last track, it works perfectly.

I think the little snippet of Winter Bird works well in context of the album. I prefer how it's before another song, instead of in the middle of another song. If it were up to me, I probably would have made it it's own track though.

I have to say that I love my "Lists" for the 80s, 90s, 2001-2010 and 2011-2020 (on this thread...pages 8 and 9).
Can't believe the high number of songs (B-Sides, Extra tracks, Unreleased) that didn't make it on the original albums. Many of these songs are relatively "unknown" even to McCartney fans. This is why Paul needs a complete and up-to-date Compilation. They would be much better known if they get on a "final" Compilation. And many of these songs aren't on any past Compilations. Here's a partial list:
Rainclouds I'll Give You a Ring Simple As That Yvonne's the One Tough on a Tightrope It's Not True
Back On My Feet Flying to My Home Loveliest Thing Paul/Elvis Costello 1988 Original Demo's (9 tracks)
Off the Ground/The Complete Works (Disc 2 - 11 tracks) Broomstick Love Come Tumbling Down Same Love Squid
Love Mix/ Waiting for the Sun to Shine Whole Life Fabulous She Is So Beautiful Summer of 59 This Loving Game
Why So Blue Turned Out Demons Dance Get Started Sixty Second Street
On the Wings of a Nightingale (80's Demo and Unreleased) Lindiana (Unreleased 80's Track)

Great song Oobu and no I didn't have it on any of my "Decade" LIsts. I guess it would belong in the 2001-2009 Decade. Another great example of why Paul needs an Up-to-Date Compilation. Don't know if you feel similar to me, but I think the last Compilaton "Pure McCartne" in 2016 was just loosely thrown together with not a lot of research. There are so many "missing" good songs and that is why I was trying to point out why Paul needs a much better Compilation that fully covers his entire Post Beatles' Career. Not just hits but so many hidden gems. "India" is yet another good example and choice. Thanks

Since I have redone all the Decades from the 80's to the most recent full Decade, I thought I would go back to the 1st Decade...the 70's. Looking immediately above, I like my choices for the 1st Half of the 70's...from the 1st album and "single" through Band on the Run. Since Paul was so well covered by radio, most of the songs are pretty well known. I like some of my "surprise" choices like B-sides, live versions and a couple of unreleased tracks. I have also included some of the deeper album cuts. Let me know if I have missed one of your favorites or if there is simething that doesn't belong.

I think your list is just about right. If I was going just by my personal opinions, I'd want to also include Oo You, Big Barn Bed and One More Kiss. But that would probably be too many songs and I don't think most fans would consider those to be essential songs, so you're probably right to leave them off if we're trying to be objective.
Little Lamb Dragonfly is my favorite Wings/Solo song, so as long as that one is included in this compilation (and it is) I'm happy

Thanks Nancy. My free time is just about over for a while. My wife and I are starting a road trip this morning. Before I left I wanted to put on my revised 70's LIst above so people don't have to ge back a bunch of pages.
I'll probably only be on Maccaboard periodically for the next 3-4 weeks but I think I have made my points for the NEED for a "New and Updated" McCartney Compilation in 2022. Timing would be perfect for when he turns 80. I've been following the guy since 1963 (I was about 15) and he has never stopped writing great music. As far as being prolific, only Bob Dylan rivals Paul as far as continuous songwriting creativity. There are just so many good to great Macca songs that are relatively unknown. They need to be heard and the best way for that to be accomplished is one final Compilation By Decade.

Thanks McCall. I like your additional suggestions (Oo You, Big Barn Red and One More Kiss) and I had considered them but as you say, just too many songs to consider.

Another early song I thought about adding to the 70's Disc is Paul's Demo of "Goodbye" that he wrote for Mary Hopkin. Paul's vocal on this Demo is great and it was a hit for Mary. Didn't include it because it could be a "legal" issue since it was recorded when Paul was a Beatle. Anyway, good song and great vocal by Paul so it would be a great hidden gem if he could add it to this Compilation.
-
BJ... I love your work!!!
A Love For You....
Where did that end up placing?
That's one of my all-time faves.

Goodbye was a solo project, so I don't see why it couldn't be included. If this was a John Lennon Compilation, you could add Give Peace A Chance! P.S. Off topic, but the Beatles tribute band I saw Saturday night played The Ballad Of John and Yoko! I don't think I've ever heard a Beatles tribute band do that before!

As far as the "Ballad of John and Yoko" I've never seen any cover Band or individual to that song. As you know...it was just John and Paul playing on the final recording. Paul was doing drums and bass I think.

I have "A Love for You" on the 70's Disc 1, Track 9 above. Love that Unreleased song.that was first done in the Ram Sessions in 1971. It later appeared on "The In-Laws" Soundtrack to the movie.in 2003.
PS Did you see my earlier "Ballroom Dancing" story of my 1 Year old Daughter (she might had been 14 or 15 months) dancing to the song at our house. I'm sure she heard many of the Tug of War songs as I was playing the whole album, but that was the one that got her dancing. If you missed it, it is back on Page 8 or 9.

McCall...Don't know if you noticed but I included as part of the 70's Decade (Disc 2 Track 12 above) the unreleased song "Waterspout". Another relatively unknown song that would be great addition to this kind of Compilation. A kind of "love or hate it" kind of song but I kind of like it despite the off the wall "title".

Thanks for mentioning Waterspout, I had almost forgotten that one. I like it, it probably deserves to be in a compilation. It kind of reminds me of Ob La Di Ob La Da, although I like Ob La Di more.
