Now I'm going to start working on my REVISED 2 DISC SET FOR THE 90'S. Based on several comments about selections and omissions, I think I will break the best of the 90's into 2 Discs like I have now done for all the other Decades. By doing 2 Discs, we can keep the overall # of tracks per Disc to under 20 and also keep the overall "time" down.
I may also have to break one of the earlier rules that I have mainly had for each Decade in general. Because of Linda's illness in the middle of the 90's, Paul wasn't as prolific in the 90's relative to "new" Paul written (or cowritten) songs. Becaue of that reason, I might add a few of the covers from his last labum of the 90's - Run Devil Run. I thnk a few of them need to be included for 2 reasons...1) they are "rare" early rock oldies and 2) Paul made these oldies his own and makes them sound very different than the originals. Let me know what you think!
I would add "Brown Eyed Handsome Man", "Lonesome Town" and "All Shook Up. See links.
- All Shook Up - Brown Eyed Handsome Man - Lonesome TownTotally agree!
And B J, Save Us was another one I really liked in addition to New, I Can Bet and Appreciate.
Thanks Nancy. I like "Save Us" a lot too. On top of the "New" album songs you mentioned above, I would add "Early Days, Alligator and Scared". As far as "extra songs" not included on the original "New" album I would also include "Turned Out". This last track should have been on the Album and yet another example of a great Non-Album song. "Turned Out" has a George Harrison, Traveling Wilbury and ELO feel and imo the best extra track during the "New" sessions. It was on the subsequent Deluxe and Collector's Edition of "New" with the added disc.

IN SUMMARY, after revisiting the Album "New" for the first time in several years, I think it is yet another "latter" period very strong album with lots of variety and continued his "latter period"resurgence that started with Flaming Pie in the mid 90's. As far as Paul "Solo" albums, I would probably put "New"in the latter half of Paul's 10 Best Solo' albums. Better than Driving Rain in the very early 2000's but not as good as Chaos and Creation, Flaming Pie, Tug of War and Egypt Station. Imo,.. "New"while a very good album doesn't have as many "all time" classic Paul Solo songs as those other 4 albums. "New" has one all timer for sure in "Early Days" but Chaos, Flaing PIe, Tug of War and Egypt Station each has as many as 4 or 5. Honestly, I also have a tough time comparing "Great' Paul Solo albums starting with "Tug of War" against his top albums in the 70's. I know that the earlier Wings' albums like BOTR, Venus and Mars and Ram would make my Top 10 but not sure if I can rank his younger stuff compared to his "older" material like Chaos, PIe, Tug and Egypt Station. Hard fo rme to compare the "younger" Paul vs. the "older" Paul.. But as I found in my "Best of Paul by Decades" Exercise, all of Paul era's are GREAT IMO.

I agree with what you've said about New, and definitely see it as a strong album that continued Paul's latter period resurgance. I love the song Hosanna, and consider it a classic, though I think that's probably an unpopular opinion. I agree that Early Days is a classic too. Queenie Eye and New (the song) I'd rate just behind those, right on the edge of maybe being classics.

"On top of those 6 songs, I welcome all boardies to comment on any of the other "deeper" tracks on "New" as well as any of the extra tracks on a bonus Disc called "Collector's Edition" that augmented the original "New" album. I've been listening to them on Youtube. The "extra tracks" include:
Turned Out (produced by Ethan Johns and Giles Martin)
Get Me Out of Here followed by the hidden track Scared (produce by Giles Martin)
Struggle (Bonus track on Japanese Edition of" New" and Produced by Paul Epworth)
Hell to Pay (produced by Giles Martin)
Demons Dance (produced by Ethan Johns)"
The only three I remembered hearing before was "Turned Out", "Hell To Pay" and "Demons Dance". I listened to them again to refresh my memory and as I thought they were all ok but nothing special. I like "Turned Out" the most, nice uptempo song until tempo change halfway through the song which I did not like. Thankfully, the tempo change was quick and song bounced along again. "Turned Out" IMO is radio friendly and could have been decent B Side. "Hell To Pay" was very "blah" song to me, it just plodded along and could not wait for it to be over. "Demons Dance" is decent mid-tempo acoustic number which drags a bit and would have been better a minute shorter. Not one of these songs was good enough to be on the main "New" album IMO.

Thanks for responding Yankeefan. I agree with you about "Turned Out" and I probably like it even more than you. I think it should have been on the album over at least 3 or 4 other tracks. As you know, not the first time that Paul has done this. As I said in an earlier post..."Turned Out has a George Harrison or Traveling Wilbury/ELO feel to me. I think it's better in the very least than Road, Hosanna. znd Looking At Her.
I haven't gotten into" Struggle" at all (the Japanese Edition Bonus Cut) and like you I think "Hell to Pay" is just ok. I kind of like "Demon's Dance" a little especially Paul's piano playing but I could see some critics bashing it for having a little "Granny music" feel to it.
PS I'm going to send you a PM soon to update you on our Rocky Mountaineer Summer trip. Thanks

I always liked NEW.
Firstly, Turned Out is wonderful and should've been on the album. And so very, very George... Get me Out of Here also should've made the cut.
Queenie Eye I like and a great "video".
Appreciate - I loved from the first listening.
I Can Bet
Save Us
Everybody out There
The only two songs I really panned at the time were Hosanna (such hype, such little deliverance) and the hidden Scared (which on a fresh listening is not as bad as I thought at the time - still....)

Toris...I think you forgot a couple. I really like Early Days and Alligator. Arguably, I think they are the 2 best tracks on "New".

I like Early Days, too. Not a giant song, for me, but it's OK. I don't dislike it.
Alligator is OK.
Most of the songs are great. Two or three of them are pedestrian, but that's OK... I still like them.
Hosanna - I still can't get into. The worse song on the album.
And I'm still struggling with "Scared"... but as I say, it's not as bad as I first thought.

" As I said in an earlier post..."Turned Out has a George Harrison or Traveling Wilbury/ELO feel to me. I think it's better in the very least than Road, Hosanna. znd Looking At Her."
I stand corrected BJ (lol), "Turned Out" was definitely better than "Hosanna" which I really did not like at all. Like "Toris" said, the song was so hyped and to me was a major letdown.

Always loved "Early Days" and I still think it's the best song on the "New" album.
Love the "middle" lyric section:
"May sweet memories of friends from the past,
Always Come to You, when you look for them
And your inspiration, long may it last
May it Come to you time and time again"
I remember when we were doing the Top 15 Paul "Post Beatles" Songs Thread here and I had "Early Days" in that group of Paul's "Best Songs" and I still stand by that choice. Great song imo.

Just reviewed my last and revised Compilation List for the 2011-2020 Decade on the previous page here (Page 6). As far as the "extra" New tracks not on the original "New" album, I included "Turned Out", and "Demon's Dance". As a stand alone track, I also included "Scared". I like "Scared" better than others and I think it's a good ballad. We can always quibble about a song or two, but on the whole I think it's a very good 2 Disc Selection for the final Decade of this proposed Compilation Project. The overwhelming majority of tracks are not on Paul's last compilation "Pure McCartney".

Sorry about that but there are no other ways to inform somebody that they have mail because the "mail notification" thing is not working to let you know you have a message. I have received a few PM's the last few weeks and never saw notice that I got one. I have told BJ about PM's I sent him in this thread because he is the OP of the thread. Once again my apologies .
