"Out There" 2013 Setlist Critique and Suggestions
-
He could be like Clapton....I just saw Clapton for the seventh time March 22 in Nashville and he played 8 songs that he either wrote or helped write during his career. so of the 21 songs 13 were covers...I would rather hear more of his songs...rather old or new at least they would be his.

'Hi Hi Hi', 'Listen To What The Man Said', 'Junior's Farm', 'Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five', 'Another Day' and 'Hope Of Deliverance' in one setlist. That's reading like some unrealistic 2009 wishlist of a fan. _O_
That's funny you mention it like that. I can remember folks on here ALWAYS wishing for 1985 and Junior's Farm...they were always at the top of the wishlists, and now we've got em!
That is how I KNOW Paul's people much check out what we write on here from time to time, Lovely Rita was another that was asked for from time to time. i think he keeps feelers out.
Yeah, that was very obvious opening night of the Up and Coming Tour. Venus and Mars was asked for a lot too...although the result wasn't quite as satisfying.
I was thrilled w/ Venus & Mars/Rock Show during the "Up & Coming Tour"... in fact, I purchased a ticket to see him in Philly for that reason alone... there was NO WAY I was going to miss that opening medley!! Now, I know he cut "Rock Show" considerably but it was still just the perfect opening IMHO... We got all of Venus & Mars and taste of Rock Show just to get the party started... then he kicked right into "Jet" and the crowd went nuts... no complaints on this end As a 70's McCartney/Wings fan, I can say that in the past 3 years I will have seen Paul play: Band on the Run, Jet, Mrs. Vandebilt, 1985, Let Me Roll It, Junior's Farm, My Love, Live & Let Die, Let 'Em In, Listen to What the Man Said, Letting Go, Venus & Mars/Rock Show, Hi Hi Hi, Another Day, Ram On & Maybe I'm Amazed ... not too shabby. Put them all into one setlist and you've got a heck of a show!

- I know that probably I'll never experience such shock like the one I had with "Cosmically Conscious" (with Ringo!) back in 2009, and considering that he might tour with this set list (more or less) for another 2/3 years, I am honestly I am not sure if we'll ever get again such a "new" set list revolution like yesterday (one day we'll do get "bored" of yesterday's new entries). But, I can't understand how badly Paul has been ignoring his post 1976 period. If my memory serves me, only "Here Today" (1982), "HoD" (1992 -single- / 1993 -album-) and "My Valentine" (2012) have been played. Just count how many albums/singles/songs have been recorded/released since 1977 onwards. Why can't he please the late 70's / 80's / 90's / 00's fans a little more? I'd be happy with just *two* inclusions from this period. No More Lonely Nights, With A Little Luck, My Brave Face/This One/Figure of 8 (not played since 1990), C'Mon People (not played since 1993), Pipes Of Peace, Beautiful Night, Souvenir, Stranglehold, Dance Tonight (just kidding ;-)), Wanderlust, Only Love Remains, Once Opon A Long Ago, etc. There are such never-ever-performed beautiful songs from this period that it makes me sad to think that at this point they will never make it to the concerts. I'd wish he toured in 1982/86. Many of these would have been performed, but I can understand why he didn't do it until 1989. There are many reasons. 3) Long & Winding Road, Let Me Roll It, Get Back, Back In The USSR. Isn't it time to give them a rest? During the 70's he hadn't even performed Hey Jude, and Let It Be didn't make it until 1979. I am sure that fans will survive if some or all of these are not being played. Clapton hasn't performed "Tears In Heaven" since 2004, Phil Collins hasn't played "I'd Wish It Would Rain Down" more than five times, Elton John hasn't performed "Healin' Hands" since 1990. I mean, Paul is so big that he is beyond these songs.
my opinion is the same. It's a pity that songs from the last 30 years are so much underrepresented. "Out there" Tour isn't really a promo tour for WOA Reissue, because there have to be more stuff from this tour... it's still a Paul MccCartney Tour with a accentuation of Beatles Songs like the last Tours The biggest suprise on this setlist is that Hi Hi Hi was added and jet dropped and juniors farm is still there. This let me hope that there is more possible in future. Here are ideas for an alternative setlist: Eight Days a Week Junior's Farm All My Loving Listen to What the Man Said (Let Me Roll It) - Getting Closer|Figure of Eight|Ever Present Past Paperback Writer My Valentine Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five The Long and Winding Road Maybe I'm Amazed Hope of Deliverance We Can Work It Out Another Day And I Love Her Blackbird (Here Today) - Somebody who cares|One of this Days|Wanderlust Your Mother Should Know Lady Madonna All Together Now (Mrs. Vandebilt) - My Brave Face|The World Tonight|Pipes of Peace Eleanor Rigby Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite! Something Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da Band on the Run Hi, Hi, Hi Back in the U.S.S.R. Let It Be Live and Let Die Hey Jude Encore: (Day Tripper) - Get Back Lovely Rita (Get Back) - So glad so see u here|Anyway Encore 2: Yesterday (Helter Skelter) - Goodnight Tonigt|Beautiful Night Golden Slumbers Carry That Weight The End

audi:
I got through high-school playing Press To Play from beginning to end all the time. I went to college motivated by Flowers In The Dirt and Off The Ground. And I bought every CD-single for Off The Ground. Same for Flaming Pie, which blew me away. As a young professional, I was delighted to see Paul get back in the saddle and floor me with monsters like "Run Devil Run" and 'Try not To Cry." And he's been on a roll since Driving Rain...and on and on. These are memories of my Paul McCartney experience. And they deserve every bit as much respect as any other Beatles or Wings hit.
Brilliant post Audi. I'm missing his solo hits so badly, feels like they have been cut loose. He has certainly delved deeper into his Wings past which is great but it's a too Beatle heavy set now. Hi Hi Hi is great as is Another Day and Listen to What the Man Said, but absolutely nothing from the 80's or 90's is selling this era of his work very short indeed.

To give Paul his credit, he has certainly changed things around with this tour; 1) He's had the courage to drop songs that have been around a long time Like Jet, I've got a feeling, Sing the Changes and Dance Tonight. 2) Think Eight Days a Week is a great opener, and he may have others up his sleeve to introduce further down the line. Hopefully we've seen the last of MMT/HG. Some great additions to the show- LTWTMS, Another Day, Hi Hi Hi, Lovely Rita, Your mother should know, All Together Now 3) The second half of the show has finally changed, and about time! 4) My only gripe, not sure about him doing Mr Kite, felt he maybe could have done another off Sgt Pepper, but if it comes across well in the show then who am I to argue!

I find it strange he would play MR. KITE, but not WHEN I'M 64. Maybe he is waiting to play that one as WHEN I'M 74 on his 2016 world tour of the USA!!

Lol a simple change in a lyric would not be a problem for Paul

Am I the only one who thinks Eight Days A Week is a lame opener? I never thought I'd say this but I think I actually prefer Hello Goodbye and Magical Mystery Tour. All three songs are pretty repetitive but at least HG and MMT have a certain energy. However, I'm hard pressed to find a more boring Beatles song that goes nowhere than Eight Days A Week.

Eight Days A Week, is not really my cup of tea either. It's a song where, if I happen to be listening to any Beatles' music on a playlist, I will immediately skip it! But I am going to reserve any judgement, until I hear it at my show. I already know the the new setlist, but I am avoiding audio/video clips. Hopefully, I will be pleasantly surprised at how 'fresh' it sounds.

I personally felt that Hello Goodbye/Magical Mystery Tour were just around for too long, and there never seemed to be any alternative. I agree they do have energy. Good for Paul in making a change of some sort, wether we agree or disagree with it.

Since it apparently MUST be a Beatles song, I thought 'I Saw Her Standing There' would have been a wise opener. First song on the first Beatles album. An album that just celebrated it's 50th birthday. And lots of energy. And it with the show ending with the (almost) final Beatles song in 'Golden Slumbers/CTW/The End', that would make 'I Saw Her Standing There' a logical bookend.

If it is a MUST that it has to be a Beatle song (lol), then your idea sounds good to me. Personally, I always thought the song "That Was Me" (MAF)would be a fun opener. Song lyric reflects on McCartney's career and you could have some neat vidoe footage of him from the early days to now on big screen behind him.

- Disagree a bit. I don't think it took any "courage" for McCartney to drop "Dance Tonight" on "Sing the Changes". These are solo/Fireman songs and not huge crowd favorites. 2) From clip, "Eight Days A Week" was not bad opener. I like the additions with exception of "All Together Now", can think of so many others I would rather hear. 4) Agree with "Mr. Kite", liked the inclusion of "Lovely Rita" much better.

I agree that "I Saw Her Standing There" would be a great opener. Maybe we'll see it tonight, with the debut of the B setlist?

I like it too. We used to play it in my band and now we do it in the acoustic duo I perform in. Great tune!
-
I don't think it has to be a Beatles tune since he did open with Venus and Mars/Rockshow...
