"Out There" 2013 Setlist Critique and Suggestions
-
If Macca dared to be even bolder, he could even drop All My Loving, Let Me Roll It, The Long and Winding Road, Here Today, Lady Madonna, Eleanor Rigby & BITUSSR, and add even more rare songs, or songs not performed in a long time. I mean, if Dance Tonight, Sing The Changes, Jet & I Got A Feeling were dropped, it would be totally if the mentioned above were dropped, and not return in a long time. Remember there still are many other not performed songs: Silly Love Songs, No More Lonely Nights, Ballroom Dancing, So Bad, Not Such a Bad Boy, Wanderlust, etc.

In reality, he's not going to drop a bunch of Beatles/Wings tunes in favor of playing half of the Tug of War album... it's just not going to happen. We lost Jet, he gave us "Hi Hi Hi". We lost "I Got a Feeling" and he gave us "Lovely Rita". Paul likes to balance things out. When the new album comes out, he'll give us a couple of tunes off that record to replace "Dance Tonight" and "Sing the Changes"... he may even drop "My Valentine" at that point. But he's most definitely NEVER going to drop 1/3 of his Beatles songs in favor of 80's/90's solo material. It blew my mind that during the '09 tour, he played two songs from the Flaming Pie album in one show! I don't see that happening again... but you never know

Yeah, I am a little disappointed Paul dropped Sing The Changes and Dance Tonight. I haven't seem him since 2005, so I've never seem him play those. It's a pity he doesn't play more of his newer material and more Wings. Silly Love Songs is one that would be fantastic. Can't believe he's never done that one since '76! The Beatles are the greatest ever, but honestly, when I go see Paul, I enjoy his solo material and Wings stuff a lot more! If I could make one request this tour, though, I'd love to hear Venus And Mars/Rock Show/Jet!! I'm going to the show when he gets here in Indianapolis. Can't wait!!!!

Well, "Dance Tonight" and "Sing The Changes" are already dropped! I'm very interested to see what happens to the setlist after the new album comes out. That's an interesting point about 2009...while our number of wings songs have grown over the years, the number of solo songs has shrunk with '09 being the most interesting assortment... 2009 -Here Today -Flaming Pie -Calico Skies -Dance Tonight -Only Mama Knows -Sing The Changes -Highway 2010 -Ram On -Here Today -Dance Tonight -Sing The Changes -Highway 2011/2012 -Maybe I'm Amazed -Here Today -Dance Tonight -Sing The Changes (-My Valentine) 2013??? -Maybe I'm Amazed -Here Today -Hope of Deliverance -My Valentine

While I am sick of both those songs, I do find it strange that Paul decides to visit all these "new" cities in 2013 and many of them haven't heard the new show, yet he changes the set so radically. I'd say there's still a chance for Venus and Mars/Rock Show/Jet...I'm feeling a 3-5 song shift when he comes to the US. Nothing BRAND new, but maybe bringing in some songs that have been swapped around lately.
-
I don't expect anything different in the US.... except to drop Hope Of Deliverance. And for the cities with 2 shows.... for the 2nd show, he might take out a few songs like And I Love Her, and Maybe I'm Amazed..... and replace them with..... I've Just Seen A Face, Michelle, My Love.... etc Nothing radical.

Enjoyed a lot of the dialogue here. I will always be a huge Macca fan whatever he plays. He's still # 1 in my book but I too wished he would play more of his Solo (Tug of War and beyond) material. I don't get upset over it because I realize he is playing to the "masses" and they come to his shows to hear Beatle songs and his Wings' era hits. It is a huge shame in my opinion because I think (like so many of us on this thread) so much of his solo stuff is criminally underrated. I just think that he could have had both...Beatles/Wings and Solo in his setlist and the casual fans would still walk away with even more respect. I can only imagine how great "Young Boy" would sound live. It is a great rocking song that would go down well in either a stadium or arena. I get his need to play his awesome Beatle songs (and Wings hits) but on each tour all he would have to do is play 4 or 5 songs from his various Solo albums like Tug of War, Flowers in the Dirt, Off the Ground, Flaming Pie, Chaos, Driving Rain etc. He's also got some great Wing songs from Back to the Egg that he hasn't played over the last 30 plus years. When he is playing 36 or so songs, therer is no reason he can't sprinkle in 5 songs from so many great choices. He has so many great p0p/rock songs from all eras that deserve to be heard. Songs like Ever Present Past, Put It There, This one, etc. would go down so well in my opinion. These are classic McCartney Pop. Another pet peave....I also don't understand why classics like Mull of Kintye or Hope of Deliverence should only be played in certain Countries. Both songs are fantastic and would go down equally well in the U.S. Just wished Paul had more confidence in his "complete Catalog" and stop listening to the Marketing people. Paul is so special because of his complete body of work. I remember when Bob Dylan was so complementary about Paul and the fact that his songwriting prowess (especially his melodies) just keeps going. Mr. Dylan was not just talking about his Beatle songs. I just think that Paul has wasted so many of his past tours not mixing in 4 or 5 Solo songs. He would still have room for many Beatle songs. Believe me, no one would walk out the venue disappointed hearing the best of Paul's Solo songs. In fact, the casual fan would walk out saying...I don't remember or vaguely remember that one but I really liked it. Hopefully, we may have at least a couple of Solo surprises when he hits the US portion of the tour but sadly I'm not counting on it. At least he did shake up the Setlist with new Beatle and Wings songs and I am looking forward to the Fenway show.

Kingmacca, I think anyone that doesn't hear how fantastic McCartney's Wings/solo music is, should get their ears checked! There are some Beatle songs better than some Wings/solo songs, and there are some Wings/solo songs that are better than some Beatle songs!! McCartney has said that he will neve ever stop performing, so I will never ever stop asking for more of his awesome music! The Beatles have been done, redone and overdone!!

5 solo songs more than now and 5 Beatles songs less means we get the nice 50:50 mix like on the tours 89/90 and 93. Young boy is besides pipes of peace one of my favorites I would like to listen on tour.

That last line is right on. I love The Beatles, but it's a Paul McCartney concert, not advertised as a "Paul McCartney Plays the Hits of The Beatles" concert.

Really sad he's dropped I've just seen a face, my favorite song of all time. I'm going to see him in Vienna, keeping all my fingers and toes crossed hoping he will have added it by then.

Thank you for being one of the first people to approach this logically. The entire Beatles catalog is not greater than the entire Wings catalog or the entire solo catalog. It is VERY much mixed up in between all three of them. Anyone that thinks "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" is better than say..."Band on The Run" would be the one in need of an ear-checking. Just to add a first hand experience: This week I was playing the game 'catchphrase' with a group of friends and the word was Bluebird. They turned to me and said Beatles song- not black but- blank. Of course I knew what they meant, but then I told them there was actually a Wings song called "Bluebird" and they thought it was hilarious that he would write two songs about birds...but, one individual was really intriguied and went on to say how much he likes what he's herad of Wings! So, I think I'll be taking the liberty of getting him the standard edition of WOA when it comes out.

Precisely. The general public is rather ignorant of Wings. In a group of 12...one person knew "Bluebird", one cared to hear it, and the other 10 have probably forgotten the conversation.

joking of course...don't take this the wrong way (I know someone will)...but I can't resist...maybe you should find some new friends. JOKING! And actually what difference is it what songs they knew? They probably would never go to a Paul McCartney concert either. Or they have not bought his music for *cough* 50years*cough*

I think though, universal appeal would dictate with the fact that The Beatles are the greatest selling artist of all time. They transcended the 60's even though they were only of the 60's. Grandparents, parents, children, new and old all love The Beatles. Most of the venue is filled with first time concert goers who are coming to see a Beatle. When I saw Paul during the Up and Coming tour, only six of the first 18 songs were that of The Beatles. Venus and Mars Rock Show Jet All My Loving Letting Go Got to Get You into My Life Highway Let Me Roll It The Long and Winding Road Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five Let 'Em In My Love I'm Looking Through You Two of Us Blackbird Here Today Dance Tonight Mrs. Vandebilt The last half was more Beatle heavy. Eleanor Rigby Something Sing the Changes Band on the Run Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da Back in the U.S.S.R. I've Got a Feeling Paperback Writer A Day in the Life Let It Be Live and Let Die Hey Jude Day Tripper Lady Madonna Get Back Yesterday Helter Skelter Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise) The End ...But Band on the Run was well represented with a total of 5 songs (his best selling Wings album), Venus and Mars with 3, Red Rose with 1, WATSPOS with 1 and Live and Let Die. ( 11 wings) I could have seen adding more songs, (especially from solo career, which had 1 tug of War, 1 Memory almost.., and 2 firemen.) However I do still hold true that MOST of the fans in the audience wanted to see The Beatles songs he performed, that doesn't make it right or better but I can understand knowing what most of your audience is looking for and unfortunately solo material and Wings included is in the minority at his shows.

Fun fact follow-up: Just played Band on The Run album for one of the ten "forget-ers" and they were loving it! Had them singing along to BOTR, Jet, Mrs. Vandebilt and Let Me Roll It by the end! Bluebird didn't seem to stick oddly enough.
