"Out There" 2013 Setlist Critique and Suggestions

Michelley:
Thought folks here would appreciate this experience I had today: I was out shopping and came upon a nifty Beatles shirt that I wanted to try on. So this salesgirl -- who looked about 22 or so, took me to a fitting room, looked at the shirt, and said, "I have that shirt, I'm a huge Beatles fan. I'm going to see Paul McCartney for the first time in July." So we chatted a bit about how great Paul's shows are. And she, very cutely, fretted about what she should wear to the show. Then she said, "i suppose he'll play mostly Beatles songs, right? And maybe some songs by that other band he was in. What was that other band named?" It was hard to be irritated because she was SO excited. But still.
Yes, well. Wings was certainly popular and groundbreaking in the short decade of the 1970s. But their influence and visibility is far overshadowed by The Beatles. It stands to reason that Wings' legacy is not as long lived as the Fab Four's, but often the younger generation just refers to Paul's solo work under his own name, and not Wings. The other side of this story comes from Whoopi Goldberg who in her early stand up with Comic Relief in the mid-late 1980s included a joke about how her own son asked her if Paul McCartney was in a band before Wings.

See, I just can't agree with that. It's not Paul's fault. The only thing that is Paul's fault is being part of an iconic band that changed rock and pop music in countless ways. However much I like Wings, and I do, the fact that people want to hear Beatles songs has everything to do with the massive global legacy of the Beatles and very little to do with Paul not playing enough of his solo work. It's not that Wings wasn't good; it's that it had no where near the influence of Paul's first band.

I think Paul never had enough confidense in his own work & has not promoted it for years. He is the Beatles spokesperson & has been for a loooong time. He knows where the money is. Just like Band on the Run. He has fed that to the Beatles people & they now know that one. : If he played more solo stuff I think they would get to know them too...IMHO.

If Wings was more popular than the Beatles, he'd be playing Wings. But that's not the way it worked out. It definitely gave me pause when the sales girl made that remark to me. But like I said, I don't view it as Paul's fault that he's a walking icon. He's got to carry that weight.

He could play an entire tour of just his solo material from the past 35 years if he was willing to do what Bob Dylan had done and: 1. Play small-sized venues 2. Not care whether those venues sell out or if they're half full (and few of Dylan's shows sell out anymore). 3. Not care whether people are entertained or sing along or know the material. Does any of that sound like Paul? It'd be a hell of a tour, though, for those of us who understand how many great songs he's written even in just the past 10 years.

Really, how is it Paul`s fault when these are comments made by people who haven`t seen him before? It`s more to do with the media and what gets played on the radio than Paul`s confidence in everything post-Beatles. I do think some fans are rather unrealistic about how well anything other than Beatles song will go down. I would love to hear Big Barn Bed too - but the majority of the audience will not be "rocking out" to it. It was notable on "Rockshow" that the Beatles songs got the biggest response.
-
Well my fellow Sir Paul fanatics, I've caught shows in Orlando and Austin; heading to Tulsa on Thursday. The two shows have been brilliant; Paul sounds better than ever. Couple comments though; Mr. Kite does not go over very well at all; moving Hi Hi Hi to encore was perfect; Lovely Rita didn't work as well as an encore; Listen To What The Man Said erupted both crowds; it sounded great and the light show during the song was very, very cool; Mrs. Vandebilt still has the masses yelling Ho Hey Ho for 4 minutes!! And my all time favorite rock song EVER, 1985, totally shakes the arena. So, yes, would I like a few more Wings songs; of course. But this setlist was just almost perfect; finally has a Wings tune for an encore. On to OK!!

How are the crowds responding to "Another Day"? I think it's a pretty big deal that he's playing that one too!! I didn't expect Mr. Kite to be well received but I really do want to hear it in July!!!

Paul can be confusing at times. If one crowd doesn't get into HOPE OF DELIVERANCE, it disappears from the set list. But MR. KITE will stay in the set list, even if it becomes the bathroom break song.

I can imagine Lennon signing the second "If we ever get out of here" on Band On The Run. The Beatles would have just continued to evolved forever.

That's always an interesting thought...I think some of Lennon's songs would've been so much better if they had been fleshed out with McCartney...and I think McCartney's songs could've been taken a little more seriously with Lennon's involvement.

It is very odd...Paul clearly enjoys playing BOTH songs based on the clips I've seen at least!

I have a suggestion for the Tulsa May 29th gig: PLAY "BIRTHDAY"!!!
-
I hope that Paul will play "Big Barn bed" in Tulsa!!
