Set List critique

I caught Billy Joel's name back there a few posts...I've never seen him do this, but I've noticed on recent setlists that he has had an audience vote between two songs live on the spot. Of course, I'm sure most of the time the cheers sound about the same and he just plays whatever the heck he wants...but I think it's a neat gesture!
And he's not thin-skinned about it either. Love that about Billy Joel.

The bigger it is the more difficult it becomes to be experimental I guess. Especially when you played in The Beatles and you can feel the demand in your nervous system. it is a bit of shame considered that performing the whole of "Tug of War" and "Pipes of Peace" in concert is material that most artists can only dream of. And he never play one single song from them! Well, he played "Ebony and Ivory" on the 1989/90 tour.
Here Today is from Tug of War, maybe its that Generation i.e Paul, Elton John, Billy Joel, Rod Stewart etc that come to the conclusion that people just wanna hear the hits!
That was definitely the case with Neil Diamond recently. He did about four or five songs from his new album, plus one from a couple albums ago, but everything else was from the '60s up to 1980. No one complained!

Here is my suggestion for the upcoming concerts. It's basically a modified version of the Out There setlist. Eight Days A Week Save Us All My Loving Silly Love Songs (instead of Listen To What The Man Said) Helen Wheels (instead of Let Me Roll It) You Won't See Me (instead of Paperback Writer) My Valentine The Back Seat Of My Car (instead of 1985) The Long and Winding Road No More Lonely Nights (instead of Maybe I'm Amazed) I Will (instead of I've Just Seen A Face) We Can Work It Out Goodnight Tonight (instead of Another Day) And I Love Her Blackbird Early Days (instead of Here Today) New Queenie Eye Lady Madonna Hey Bulldog (instead of Mr. Kite) All Together Now Lovely Rita Everybody Out There Eleanor Rigby Here Comes The Sun (instead of Something) Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da Band On The Run She's A Woman (instead of Back In The USSR) Let It Be Live And Let Die Hey Jude Encore 1: Ticket To Ride (instead of Day Tripper) Hi Hi Hi Can't Buy Me Love (instead of Get Back) Encore 2: Yesterday Oh! Darling (instead of Helter Skelter) Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End

I agree, at least it is attempt at doing something the audience wants. Didn't Elvis Costello do a tour where they had a wheel with song names and they spun it to see what he would do next.

With 'New' being almost 2 yrs old, you wonder how many songs he will still perform from it. On the press release for the tour he mentioned ' a few surprises' but it could be a lot of hot air : Guess we'll find out on April 21st.
Just like one of the tours years ago was changed to be minty fresh - lol

"And he's not thin-skinned about it either. Love that about Billy Joel." In the 80's, I saw Billy Joel and I remember him telling the crowd he was going to play "Piano Man" now (2nd song) because he did not want to hear the crowd screaming it out all night - lol.

Elvis did do a tour with a spinning wheel. That's one of the coolest ways I've heard of selecting songs to play during a show!

He's done it a few times, and there's a DVD from a few years ago. Very cool. It would be incredible if Paul ever did that, but I highly doubt it. I love 5th Beatle's setlist above, by the way. Hey, a couple of them could happen!

Silly Love Songs, Back Seat of My Car, No More Lonely Nights, and Oh Darling are all DEFINITELY out of the running at this point. But yes, I could see him "surprising" us with something with Helen Wheels or Hey Bulldog...God knows he loves those Lennon songs!
-
I'll give you an example: Elton John released his album 'The Diving Board' at the end of 2013 and would then play about 2 songs from it, but come Nov 2014 when I saw him live they were dropped altogether from the show. What im trying to get at is that people don't necessarily come to gigs to hear that Artists new tunes. Going back to topic, maybe Paul would consider doing an obscure song in memory of Cynthia Lennon.

"But yes, I could see him "surprising" us with something with Helen Wheels or Hey Bulldog...God knows he loves those Lennon songs! " If he does something like "Hey Bulldog" instead of a any solo song I will get sick to my stomach and may never buy another thing from Mr. McCartney.

"What im trying to get at is that people don't necessarily come to gigs to hear that Artists new tune" That is a shame IMO. I know when I go to a concert I don't expect to hear every hit the artist ever did and I have bought CD's from an artist after hearing their new material live.

How many post-Beatles songs does Paul usually do in concert anyway?.
About 12 or so.
Yep and about 7 of them are from Wings or RAM which means about 5 songs after the 1970's.
And 4 of those are from the current record he's plugging. So, that leaves a whopping 1.
And that one is done because it is his tribute to John Lennon (Here Today)

Here is my suggestion for the upcoming concerts. It's basically a modified version of the Out There setlist. Silly Love Songs (instead of Listen To What The Man Said)
This is the problem with someone who has a huge back catalogue of songs - what do you play and what do you leave out? Someone will always be saying "Oh, he didn't play *insert name of song here*" For me, 'Listen To What The Man Said' is going to be one of the highlights of the upcoming shows for me. I've seen McCartney live twice so far (with Liverpool in May being my third time) and I've not seen him perform 'LTWTMS' and it's one of my all time favourite songs. 'Live and Let Die', though? Yeah, I'd not be sorry to see that go and McCartney could save a few quid with not having the pyros on stage, but I know it's a huge number for a lot of the audience. At the end of the day, I guess I'll be happy with whatever he does play.

Same, agreed. This isn't really the time for setlist change talk. He will be touring Europe, a whole territory who didn't get to see any of these - then 2+ year old - additions yet. It will be a case of 'Get Back' out/'Birthday' in and 'I've Just Seen A Face' out/'Things We Said Today' in for the back-to-back gigs, and that's about it.

McCartney should change it up! See these are the opportunities that McCartney always seems to miss. Starting a new leg of the tour is the absolute perfect time to perform totally different songs. McCartney could create so many OMG moments, but as usual he's just going to perform the same songs yet again. C'mon Mr. McCartney, really surprise the crowds, perform some songs that you have never ever done live before, and not just one or two, but a whole bunch of them! Really dig deep and perform more of those excellent songs you have! Here's one suggestion, I can't believe he hasn't done I Can Bet from his latest album. As soon as I heard that song I knew it was just screaming to be performed live!
