Set List critique

I am happy with anything he plays, but I do agree that some songs from Driving Rain, Chaos and Creation On the Backyard, Memory Almost full etc. Im perfectly okay with his Beatles amd Wings songs so as long as he keeps doing Live and Let Die because he does a fabulous firewor show for that one!
-
Its Paul's own fault that he has become a tribute band. In 89 and 93 he played a good amount of new stuff from his current albums, and the obligatory Beatles stuff.
After Chaos and Creation came around that was it. In all honesty, I wasnt too keen on the "NEW" album sans a few songs, and the few tunes I've heard off of "Egypt Station" haven't exactly had me begging for more. In fact I've listened to the 3 new songs that are available, and have a grand total of 2 listens each. Underwhelmed to say the least.
I'd love to see him throw the audience a curve and open with something like "Get Out Of My Way"(will never happen), but I'm sure he we will "Beatle us" with the first song. If he caters so much for the first timers, whats the point for us repeat customers?!?! He's been playing for over 50 years most people have had the chance to see him at one point or another. Time to start catering to the hardcore fans a bit. Even if it is a 5 song section in the middle of the show where he announces "This is for all you hardcore fans" would be fine.
And do we really need to still have a George tribute 17 years later?!? I get it for the 02-03 tours, and maybe a tour or two after. Now?!? Seems misplaced a bit.

I agree. And if he has to do a George tribute, change it to something (pun intended) else, like While My Guitar Gently Weeps or Here Comes the Sun!

How about opening with So Glad To See You Here?

I always thought he should do "All Things Must Pass" which he did wonderfully at the "Concert For George".

My set list expectations are so low at this point, I'll be ecstatic if all he does is get rid of Four Five Seconds and I Wanna be your Man.
Good point and I think they will be gone.

Sadly, I don't think he believes there are fans of his solo work. He will acknowledge Wings fans when he plays a particular song but never heard him say this one is for all you people who loved my album CHAOS - lmao !!
-
Too bad we can't get song requests to Paul because I love his solo stuff and I also would appreciate Paul still doing a tribute to George(change to a different George song) like he does a tribute to John every time.
I would love to hear solo songs like "I Can Bet" Mr. Bellamy" "She's Given Up Talking" "About You" Stuff like that. But its all up to Paul what he wants to play for us. Heck Id be happy just to see and hear him play.

Any reports on rehearsals?
I thought on his NYC Station gig that he was saving the new aditions for the tour, but then he premiered 'From Me To You'.
I was expecting at least a new opener for the show.
From this little gigs so far we got this songs to 'Freshen Up' the setlist
- Come on to me
- Confidante
- Fuh You
- Who Cares
- From me to you
-
I really thought he would have played more songs from the new album at the NYC secret gig. I thought that is what it was all about!
-
My guess would be that he's holding back on the "never-done-before" songs until the tour. The Grand Central gig was a special concert for sure, but I doubt he'd want to cram in all of the new additions/shakeups for the pop-up show.
I could see the Grand Central gig being the "farewell" to some songs that he's performed over the last tour or two - A Hard Day's Night (it'll surely be removed if there's a new opener), Hi Hi Hi (unless he puts that into rotation like Get Back/Helter Skelter), Letting Go, I've Got A Feeling (at least for this upcoming tour). As far as the new/returning material - I'd like to see Mother Nature's Son, Martha My Dear (although as we know he's said the piano part is too difficult live -- why not give it to Wix ), For No One, I Will, Rocky Raccoon, Let 'Em In, Backseat of My Car (he's clearly rehearsed it for that Mexico City bit), Hello Goodbye, My Brave Face, When I'm 64, Sgt Pepper (full version). I'm also hoping for the return of You Never Give Me Your Money, but with the entire band this time. Or how about the full version of She Came In Through the Bathroom Window? That'd be neat!
I'd also really like to see the live horn section during the tour - that will certainly FRESHEN UP the show! What would work best with horns? C'Mon People, Sgt Pepper (obviously), All You Need Is Love, or how about a freshened up version of the Long and Winding Road? I was sad to see that one go and hope it'll make a return.

Agreed I was sad to see that go as well. As for the horns I believe they were part of the Roots. I think WHO CARES would make a great opener but I think he would want to tell the bully story. Any guesses on the new tour opening song? I don't think it will be anything fresh but a comeback of Venus and Mars>Rockshow >Jet or Magical Mystery Tour. Can't wait for next Monday. Ringo on Thursday- Paul Simon on Saturday-then my Macca Canadian trek begins!

I've never had the chance to see a Venus and Mars/Rockshow/Jet or Magical Mystery Tour opener - I'd love to see either one! My gut is telling me new opener though. He's got so many early Beatles songs to choose from if he wants to stick with that era like he's done for Out There and One on One. Could even make From Me To You the new opener. Or how about I Want to Hold Your Hand or She Loves You?

He hinted today on his live Twitter question and answer that he may bring the live horns back and what better song than Letting Go for that? If he doesn’t drop A Hard Day’s Night (which he sounds lousy on) and Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite! I will be VERY disappointed! Yes, do All You Need Is Love - John wrote that. Don’t try The Long and Winding Road - you can’t sing it anymore! My God, I’d rather hear him do You Know My Name (Look Up the Number)!!
Loved From Me To You and would love it if he did I Want To Hold Your Hand or She Loves You, if he thinks he needs another Beatles song. You guys who are big fans of his later work might as well resign yourself to the fact he’s not going to surprise us with some deep cut from the ‘80s or ‘90s. (or anything from 2000-2010 either!)

Thanks for your response, Nancy. Great to hear that he may be bringing back those horns!
Just curious - why don't you think Long and Winding Road isn't in his vocal range any longer? I personally hadn't noticed anything wrong with it, especially not when I was in the audience the last time he played it in Buffalo. Was there a specific instance or do you think it just doesn't sound right?

I think Paul is as frustrated as us that he doesn't get the opportunity to play more of his solo stuff, in fact i've read an interview with him when he's said as much. He commented that when he plays non beatles/wings stuff the audience go quiet. So frustrating!
-
There is some fantastic paul tribute acts going around, and they play songs from his whole career. Tony coburn is a paul tribute who i would highly recommend.
-
If Paul will bring a brass section at his tour , here the songs that for me he should play:
Admiral Halsey
Silly Love song
Martha my dear

Might be cute and cool if he'd open with "From Me To You" (not rockin' enough? I'd like it) and also trot out a new opening surprise every concert, a different opener for each one, cause novelty is...so novel, so much fun. I think he and the band would get a big kick out of it too. The massive audience will go wild no matter what he sings first, so he wouldn't have to worry about that ! It's such a dramatic heart stopping moment when he first dashes out onto the stage (along with the boys)....suddenly, after making you wait donkey's years (he's always late), there HE is !!! The spotlight finds him, he's always center stage as befits the "star" and his band seem masters at never grabbing the spotlight from him, always in the background, sort of, though Brian Ray's golden locks catch the light and he'll suddenly unleash a dazzling smile...Rusty likes to enact little pantomimes (I saw him pretend to draw on a ciggie, flick it out his fingers and stamp on it to put it out). Abe is vivacious and outgoing. Wix, the old faithful main stay, is appealingly understated and debonair. But I must admit my eyes were mostly glued to Macca. I screamed after many of the songs and sometimes during, once or twice, I've got a really good effective Beatlemaniac type scream, high pitched and soprano-ish more than shrill; pity Paul couldn't hear it over the uproar, but maybe he can when I'm on the ninth row (?) God willing, hopefully thrilling him somewhat to elicit such a rave up (?), though it won't thrill those around me.
