It's not just about wanting stadiums full of adoring fans. In 1989, I remember reading somewhere that Paul's management told him he could no longer rely on his name alone to sell albums. So he toured to promote FITD. I also remember reading that since Michael Jackson had purchased the Beatles catalogue, if Paul wanted to generate more funds from that source, it was in his best interest to play Beatle songs in concert. So he did, and I suspect that is some of the reasoning behind his playing so many Beatle hits. It keeps promoting the Beatle brand name which still generates a lot of revenue for him. Probably a lot more than his solo catalogue, which he doesn't promote in concert even when reissued. As someone already said, he set the template in 1989, and has not deviated since. It is what promoters and audiences expect.
The 1989 tour set list was much more balanced than today and he did 32 songs not 37. McCartney played 6 songs from FITD which was his current album. In addition, he did 3 solo songs (not from FITD) and 2 1950's covers. McCartney played 3 Wings songs songs so this adds up to 14 non-Beatle songs out of 32. I will also note that McCartney opened with a song from FITD and did not play a Beatle song until the 4th song, that is unheard of today - lol. I would love it if it was balanced like this for the current tour. See set list from show I saw in NY in 1989. 1989 MSG Set list Figure of Eight Jet Rough Ride Got to Get You into My Life Band on the Run Ebony and Ivory We Got Married Maybe I'm Amazed The Long and Winding Road The Fool on the Hill Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band Good Day Sunshine Can't Buy Me Love Put It There Hello, Goodbye Things We Said Today Eleanor Rigby This One My Brave Face Back in the U.S.S.R. I Saw Her Standing There Twenty Flight Rock Coming Up Let It Be Ain't That a Shame Live and Let Die Hey Jude Encore: Yesterday Get Back Golden Slumbers Carry That Weight The End
Good points. It was in 1993 he opened with a Beatles song, Drive My Car, though he opened with Got To Get You Into My Life in 1979. But I agree, more balance and daring in 1989.

Slightly more daring, but nothing too remarkable. We're down from 6 new album songs, to 3...which is very noticeable. The opening slot has of course been predominantly Beatle themed since then (certainly no solo songs). But I think there's actually more Wings music than on that tour. The point is too expand. Fill the gaps. I would be shocked if Paul EVER adds an 80's song, for the remainder of his career!

I don't think we'll ever hear the great change-up we all want, since he plays these huge stadium tours where many people really are expecting Beatles songs and have NO IDEA what he's done since then. Of course they're all missing out. He even remarked in a recent interview that he sees how people get less interested in the show when he pulls out the new or more obscure stuff. I think it's a shame, but Paul's instincts are probably right here?he wouldn't sell out the large venues once word got around that no one's going to hear all those Beatles hits. Though I've given up on a solo-only or deep cuts tour, I'm hoping that he'll do something like an Oobu Joobu-type live webcast with none of the big hits, to give the hardcore fans something that focuses on the deep cuts. I'd pay for that!

Yes, that's a great idea! Even better if he would ask us for requests beforehand and he would do a few of them!

...We're down from 6 new album songs, to 3...
You're kidding, right?
-
It might be 4 depending on the night/setlist. We've got Save Us, New, Queenie Eye, and Everybody Out There from what I've seen. And My Valentine is newish. But I think that's it. I wish he added Early Days, maybe subbing it for Here Today sometimes, since it's still a tribute to his and John's friendship.

He did two 50's covers in 1989 and they have been replaced by Wings songs and that is fine although I think Mr. McCartney does a great job with 50's rock. Don't know why he does not think anything is good from the 80's with the exception of "Here Today" and that IMO does not count because if it was not a tribute to John Lennon he probably would have never done it. I have always wanted him to do "Take It Away" and it was a top 20 single so it is not totally obscure. The song TOW is beautiful and would love to hear that also. If he would not do songs like the ones I mentioned above forget something like "Distractions" from FITD which would be something different in the acoustic part of the concert. Anyway, we can talk all we want, it is not going to happen unfortunately. If it did, I would be shocked with you !!

He and his band did "Tequila" when I saw him in 2011. It was fun.

Cool and bet the band had a blast playing it.

Oops! That was 2010. Gettin' old.

That would be good idea IMO. It would add another new song and still do the tribute to Lennon.

The 1993 tour was even more balanced, set list below of the show in Charlotte I saw that was televised on FOX. It was 31 songs, can't count "Robbie's Bit" - lol. There was 16 Beatle songs, 6 songs from the current album (OTG), 5 Wings songs, 2 50's covers and 2 solo songs. That is basically a 50-50 split of Beatle songs and the rest of Mr. McCartney's career. I remember the crowd that night enjoying all of the music, not just the Beatle songs. There was no big lines of people heading to bathroom during non- Beatle songs. Wouldn't be nice to see this type of split with his current set list. See 1993 set list below. 1993 Charlotte NC (Blockbuster Pavillion) Drive My Car Coming Up Looking for Changes Jet All My Loving Let Me Roll It Peace in the Neighbourhood Off the Ground Can't Buy Me Love Robbie's Bit Good Rocking Tonight We Can Work It Out I Lost My Little Girl Ain't No Sunshine Hope of Deliverance Michelle Biker Like an Icon Here, There and Everywhere Yesterday My Love Lady Madonna C'mon People Magical Mystery Tour Let It Be Live and Let Die Paperback Writer Back in the U.S.S.R. Penny Lane Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band Encore: Band on the Run I Saw Her Standing There Hey Jude

More and more people are asking why McCartney doesn't change it up more? Look at the Youtube videos when he performs 1985 Listen To What The Man Said Junior's Farm letting Go Rockshow Hi Hi Hi Too Many People and some others, there's no one heading for the exits or bathrooms, especially in those other countries, those people are screaming and cheering their heads off, they absolutely love it! There's no change in the audience, and besides he could perform many songs that Wings did on their early tours, those songs are already tested, and he knows how much crowds would still like them. He thought they were good enough to perform then, and it has nothing to do with Linda, because if it did, he wouldn't perform any of them! Silly Love Songs wasn't any departure from rock for McCartney, on the very same album is the totally hard rocking Beware My Love, so anyone coming to that conclusion just isn't paying attention! Some love to say that no one knows those songs, but that's not true, who do they think bought all those albums? Those people are still around and still going to see McCartney! He could and should change it up more, let the people who look at us like we are from Mars, look all they want!

Why are you giving up on a solo-only or deep cuts show in a smaller venue?! Why does he have to always do a large venue? He doesn't have to, I guess he chooses to... Oh us hardcore fans...we're such pains, always wanting to hear the largest part of his collection... His very talented band would probably not like it either... : Paul did the studio bit for Chaos and Creation and that was to me, one of the most fascinating things he's ever done! I really wish he would do something like that for NEW. It is most fascinating to see Paul putting songs together... Just amazing...you can see him focus on it and the beautiful music just comes out! Now I would pay to see that!!!

He mentioned "Beware My Love" in a recent interview, saying he had not listened to that one in a long time and he likes it a lot. Maybe it will be added to the setlist when the remasters are released in november?

Considering "Beware My Love" was part of the "Rock Show" movie, it should have not been that long since he last heard it.

AND...it will be on the next set of remasters. I LOVE That Song!

I'd love it....not sure he can belt that one out anymore though....

Perhaps in another key? I was just noticing a song of Elton's today, that he is singing in a lower key now.
