Set List critique

Wilco is doing 6 shows at the same venue & every night is a different setlist. I can't even imagibe Paul ever doing something like that.
The Beatles rarely ever added a song or did an encore, and they never changed the setlist during a tour. Most other touring bands don't either, even playing a two night stand or more they may only change a song or two. But Paul is touring now behind the 50th Anniversary of The Beatles. It's been a bit of a big deal here in the States. The current setlist goes down pretty well. No reason to change it!
of course the current setlist goes down GREAT BUT he has so much to offer. The early Beatles cannot compare to the amount of music Paul has written over his 50 years in the bisiness.

We all have our favorites and no need to change the setlist I agree, the set list definitely goes down pretty well, I just saw the show in Atlanta and I've seen a few concerts on this tour and they were all very special in my opinion!

Wait...lemme check...this IS the setlist critque thread right? I agreed with Randy & I will agree with you. His shows are full of energy & waay powerful. I love standing in the first few rows & rocking out with everyone. All I am saying is that other people are doing different setlists & wouldn't that be cool? Paul has a bigger catalog than anyone (I assume) & I would just love to hear more of his solo music. I am not dissing what he is doind so no need to defend him. I love him too.

I agree. This thread is to critique, and throw ideas around. Certainly McCartney has a killer set list that works and thrills tens of thousands of people. I wish he would come to New Mexico and play it!! Ha ha! However, this is about wondering "what if?" What if he played My Brave Face or Hope Of Deliverance? Or surprised with renditions of Take It Away or Girls School? Just ideas and thoughts. He has an amazing back catalogue. He brought it on himself!

My "critique" is that the setlist is fine. He will probably make some changes to it again next year. He always does. But no matter what changes he makes, people complain or "make suggestions" trying to be helpful. : Like he doesn't know what he's doing. It's silly, but it will continue. Carry on...

I'm sorry Randy but I'm not trying to be helpful to anybody....are you? Like Paul reads any of this. : I just come to a discussion board.

Paul explained all the reasons for his setlist this year in Rolling Stone. Yet people still want to "critique" it. Yes, I believe people post on Paul's website because they think he will perhaps see it or hear about it. It's just a discussion board to me also, but it is on Paul's official website so you never know. Right?

You never know, but he's still not doing anything between 1983 and 2011, so draw your own conclusions.

I have asked him and the band on twitter for Silly Love Songs with the Rickenbacker bass.

It would take so little to shut me up on my setlist whining. Just adding three songs from neglected albums would make a huge statement. Still, I'm just plain bored at his signature songs. Classics or not -- I've had enough.

I think Paul's people do read the board from time to time. I remember back in 2010 that many people were clamoring for "Venus and Mars/Rock Show" to be added to the setlist, and it did get added.

It will continue if you are a thinking person. Only fanatics never question anything. It's OK to say, "I wish McCartney would play this song or that song." Or to question why he doesn't change his set list all tour. Or why, out of the blue, he opens with Magical Mystery Tour. That is part of the fun and energy of following an artist. It's OK to say, I prefer Picasso's blue period to his later cubist period. It's OK, and the artist may disagree and say, I left my blue period and have moved on. But there is nothing wrong with questioning these things. Paul is a public figure. He can handle it. He doesn't need you to defend him.

Not my words...Taken from a friend's post on another board: "Another problem is the overwhelming Beatleness of the set list. Fans of Wings and his solo work are constantly short changed so Paul can continue to fill stadiums with Beatle obsessed casual fans. In his current set, there is not one song taken from a thirty year span between "Here Today" and "My Valentine". That's a whole career for some folks, but Paul doesn't acknowledge any of his work from that period." A very accurate observation.

As I said, Paul has explained the setlist to people very clearly, and very recently. I don't need to defend him, he's perfectly capable. I don't even disagree with other opinions, I would love to see a whole section of just 80's, 90's, and 2000's songs live, but it's not gonna happen. People do not go and see him for those songs, unfortunately. So for people to continue to say it's boring or stale here is only being disrespectful to him. To me it's the discussion that's boring and stale, not his concerts. I'm not saying anything new, but neither is anybody else on this thread.

Look, I love Paul. I think everyone on this board does. But it isn't disrespectful to make comments or suggestions about his setlist in a thread called "Set List critique." This thread (and this board) both exist to help facilitate discussion. If people want to complain about the setlist, that's their prerogative. And if you want to say that the setlist is fine the way it is, then that's ok, too. I'm just saying that it's silly for you to call folks "disrespectful" in a thread that is supposed to allow people to make suggestions for Paul's setlist.
-
Paul has *never been one to vary his setlist from show to show. I do not expect him to start now. Yes he has enough catalog to do so, but it is not his style, whereas someone like Springsteen has been doing it forever, and gets ragged on by fans when he doesn't change his shows enough. I would welcome it should Paul ever decide to do it, but I do not expect it to happen or let it affect my enjoyment of seeing him live.

You are taking too much liberty here Randy. And you are talking about members here which makes it personal. I NEVER said it was boring. And I know he's never varied his setlist nor ever will. You stated this discussion is boring & stale so why do you keep commenting on it?

Of course it does not affect one's enjoyment of his concerts.
