If that's the kind of change you're looking for, then I guess we're all okay. But I thought lots of people here were hoping for more obscure solo material, not just swapping Beatles songs for other Beatles songs. (Mind you, that's fine with me.)
Well, I was just putting out the 2010 example of how he's capable of changing things up. Of course, I'd like him to delve more deeply into his solo catalogue...
I don't want deep cuts or obscure singles...I don't think many of us actually want that. Just more ...or some...songs from the last 30 years!
I agree. I don't think My Brave Face, Hope Of Deliverance, Flaming Pie, Fine Line, or Only Mama Knows are deep cuts, they were very high profile McCartney tunes. They should be in his set list regularly.
Sorry, guess I misspoke there. What you're saying is what I really meant. Still, if his goal is to get lots of young people to come and enjoy the show, most of them wouldn't know these songs, so that would kind of make them obscure. Imagine this conversation between an older fan and a younger person: "Hey, did you hear, Paul McCartney's coming to town! You know, the guy who did "No More Lonely Nights" and "With A Little Luck" and "My Brave Face"!" "Ummm...?" "And he was in the Beatles." "Cool! Let's go!" Maybe younger fans would enjoy those songs, but they wouldn't scream with joy at the opening chords. I know, I know, Paul shouldn't care, but I think he does, that's all.
We at least there are a few later generation fans who enjoy these songs! I'm from a latter generation and the only songs I get into are the solo songs and this is not only with Paul I do the same things with tribute bands. But it's a simple fact: the huge success of The Beatles. As George once said you write one good song and you'll be singing it for your whole life. Except Paul had an abundant amount of good and known Beatles songs which will forever overshadow anything he'll ever do. I hope that more fans from my generation as well as the ones blow mine and above mine wise up and start appreciating the solo stuff because in all honesty Paul's solo career can outweigh The Beatles at times. It sucks it hasn't been more successful and it's even more of a pity that it's been so heavily ridiculed. His solo career has to be one of the most underrated carreer of really any artist. You know a funny thing is I've never once thought that I was seeing a Beatles when I've seen Paul. Too bad the whole world still sees him as a Beatle and nothing else.
Every time I went to see Mr. McCartney I never once thought I was seeing the Beatles. Yes, I love the Beatle songs as much as anyone but I went to see a Wings or Paul McCartney concert and that means I want a set list to cover his total career.

I understand that, and that's true for pretty much everyone here, but his wider reputation is more like: a) He's a legend. b) He was in the Beatles....oh, and Wings. c) He puts on a great, energetic rock show with a lot of songs everyone knows (including a few powerful, emotional ballads). A local radio station here (adult alternative, or Triple A format) just did a countdown where listeners voted for their favorite 885 songs of all time. Lots of Stones, Zeppelin, Dylan, Who, and of course lots of the Beatles, and exactly ONE solo Paul song: "Maybe I'm Amazed." They followed up with the 85 Worst songs ever, which had people like Miley Cyrus and Meat Loaf and Starship, and Paul had TWO on that list: "Ebony & Ivory" and "Wonderful Christmastime." I think for a lot of people, Paul's music is seen as irrelevant after the Wings Over America tour, so maybe that's why he doesn't touch anything more recent (except brand-new stuff, and "Here Today," which is Beatles-related).

I never understood the "hate" of Ebony and Ivory" which BTW was a #1 hit. I am not saying it is a classic but to put it in the category of anything Miley Cyrus did is just plain insulting.

I hate Ebony & Ivory...so I can understand. LOl. But...Wonderful Christmastime? We all have our favorites I guess...and there is no accounting for taste at times.

A friend of mine asked Abe on twitter which songs he would add to the setlist, if it were up to him. His reply? COME TOGETHER THE BACK SEAT OF MY CAR

COME TOGETHER???? Wow, if it comes to that, it really is a Beatlemania show. He should just do Imagine after that! How about Oh Darling?

Well think about who was asked... Abe would beat the tar out of that drum fill on Come Together, it would kick ass. AND he would be all over those harmonies on Back Seat of My Car
-
I would pay the outrageous Hot Sound package to hear "Back seat of my car"!

I agree, wow. "Come Together" would not even have come to my mind for being added to set list. The band seems to like RAM and Wings songs but nothing solo except the most current album.

Well, it does have a great bass part! But I don't think John would appreciate Paul stealing that vocal, too. (Have to wonder how he'd feel about "Mr. Kite". as it is!)

Me too & me either.

Was sorting some ... recordings earlier, and haven't seen this in years. Look at that crowd, how great!

Sadly, this is one tune I don't think Paul's voice could do justice to anymore.

Yeah, I can see why he doesn't play Europe anymore!

I gotta say I am one who has always liked Ebony and Ivory. The Stevie collaboration and the solo version. Don't understand why it is so maligned. It was huge at the time too.

I've always liked it too. I have to wonder, though: I just saw something on TV about all the elephants killed for their ivory tusks, and how it's illegal to bring ivory to the US to sell. Knowing how Paul is an animal activist, could that be one reason he doesn't do this song live anymore? Last time was for Flowers In The Dirt, right?

I agree, it was huge. I remember a poster awhile back said it was just overplayed and my reply was name me a Beatle #1 song that was not overplayed - lol. I am not saying it was the greatest song ever but it was exactly what is was supposed to be, a radio friendly hit single.

IMO - the reason he did not do it again is because I think Mr. McCartney did not believe it came off well without Stevie Wonder. I think Hamish did a nice job with the Stevie Wonder part but it just did not click. Maybe it would work if he did it with Abe doing the Stevie vocal but I don't think it will ever be done again live unless it is with Stevie.
