Now that we are into 2023, here is an idea I’ve posted before. Since all the hype generally is over for Paul/MPL Projects for 2022 Fall and Christmas (Let It Be Remaster, Revolver Remaster etc) now is the time for Paul to release a new CD Project for 2023. Assuming that Paul doesn’t have a New Album/CD of new music ready, here is my older idea for “Leftovers and Rarities”.

This is more of a new Paul Compilation covering Paul’s Solo Music from 1970 to 2022. One of the boardies here (Bruce) had, in my opinion, the best idea, Bruce felt the best way to begin this project was to launch a “Starter” CD containing 1 CD or Paul’s best “unreleased and rare songs that never made it on Paul’s Original Solo albumsls.

I really like the "Follow Up #2" CD package but man BJ you are killing me. How could you not include one of my favorites "About You" from DR" -lol. Glad you included "Dance Til We're High" which is great song IMO but I would have included "Two Magpies" from EA also. Got to admit there are a few songs I don't know like "My Soul" and "In The Blink Of An Eye". Nice to see some live cuts of songs included, like we have mentioned before they are not only different than studio version they are usually better. I think this CD more than some others would be good for people to buy because it has a bunch of songs from the different editions of an album. I think most people are like me and just buy the original album and don't splurge on the special edition albums. The other thing your CD's highlight to me is how good Paul's B sides are considering in the days when we were young B sides were considered some throwaway song for the most part. I am heading off to NYC in the morning so I thought I would throw in my "two cents" before I left.

Thanks Yankeefan and have a great time in NYC and at the NY Open Tennis Tournament.  And I would have no problem witht "About You" being on my #2 CD package.  I did have a few songs that were on my lists that I reluctantly ended up leaving off.

I'm sure some of my Maccaboard friends are wondering how the heck can this guy continue to belabor this crazy "Leftovers and Rarities" idea.  There are a few others on this "made up package" of leftover tracks that Paul didn't even include on his original albums at the time.  Well one reason that I'm obsessing is that I am having a colonoscopy tomorrow.  I can't eat and I unusually have a lot of time on my hand.  Being on Maccaboard (my blog as my wife calls it) is helping me contend with fasting.  For the last 24 hours I can only eat jello and drink apple juice.  I have one more day of this and then I have the colonoscopy on Wednesday morning.  So far It's really not that bad but I dread the liquids I have to take this afternoon.  The procedure itself will be a relief since by that point I will be able to eat some real food.  Thank God for my wife and Maccaboard.  At least I have my mind off of it. And I can write about my favorite topic..Paul McCartney and his music and this crazy fantasy idea.  Bear with me my friends.

I repeated this "Starter CD" for "Leftovers and Rarities" because as you might have noticed I started a new thread.  It won't be long before we are in 2023 and that is when I hope Paul considers this idea.

Looking at the "Starter" CD, I freally like this tracklist as a whole.  I thank Bruce here for this idea of starting "Leftovers and Rarities" with 1 CD.  It's like a trial run so that casual Beatle and Paul fans can try it at an extremely low cost..  As I have said, I can see this CD selling at retail places like Target or Walmart for under $10.  during the initial sale period.

I like this "tracklist" because it contains many upbeat songs that have the classic McCartney hooks and riffs that we are accustomed to.  Just a further rundown of these songs and why I think the CD could sell and get good reviews.

First of all, the initial track "Goodbye" might be remembered by Beatle fans because Paul wrote the song for Mary Hopkin, the artist that the Beatles signed up for their new "Apple" record label in 1969.  Paul's version has his usual sweet vocals and it's really good in my opinion.  Further down the list you have some of Paul's early rockers like "A Love For You" (from the Ram sessions) and "The Mess".  I love the "live" version of "The Mess".

The tracklist also contains the "Country" charmer "Sally G" that reminds me of some of the countryish songs that the Beatles did before Beatlemania.  I know John didn't really like many of Paul's "story" songs but I like the humor in "Sally G" and its "twist" ending.  Further on, I love the crazy rocker "Waterspout".  Who could think of a crazy song title "Waterspout" other than Paul McCartney.

As for other "Unreleased" songs, I absolutely love "Yvonne's the One".  Talk about a crazy twist in the song's lyrics.  I also love the other songs that became B-Sides like Daytime Nighttime Suffering, Rainclouds, Flying to My Home, Lovliest Thing,  Love Come Tumbling Down and I Can't Imagine.   Can't believe they never made it on their original albums.  Just shows the talent that Macca has.

Finally I love Paul's demo of "Wings On A Nightingale" he wrote for the Everly Brothers.  As Yankeefan has also said, I can't believe that Paul didn't include "Home Tonight" and "In a Hurry" on Egypt Station.

All in all, I think it could be a great Paul McCartney CD and more importantly, I think it would get good reviews becaue of the reasons above and also because it contains songs that for the most part are "unknown" to the many casual Beatle and McCartney fans.

Just want to let people know that I had my colonoscopy was finished around 1pm (Eastern Standard Time).  I was thrilled when my surgeon told me that I don't have any cancers showing.

                      _____________________________________________________________________________

Now back to my favorite subject --

Just a brief sumary of what I'm proposing for a "Leftovers and Ratities" Project for Paul and MPL to consider for 2023:

                      1. Starter CD (1 CD with a tracklist of 16 relatively "unknown"songs.

                      2. Follow-up #1 (2 CD Package with 42 tracks for "Leftovers and Rarities" covering basically from McCartney 1 through Flaming Pie and Run Devil Rund.  We're talking about the 70's, 80's and 90's time span.  One additonal track I subsequently added to Follow-up #1 Tracklist  was the "Live Version of Maybe I'm Amazed"on 1976's Wings Over America Album.

                      3. Follow-up #2 (2 CD Package with 40 tracks covering basically from Driving Rain to Paul's latest McCartney 3).

I personally have selected all of these tracks but there were a bunch more I could label as Honorable Mentions.  Of course, we can quibble over a few of my selections but overall I feel the Packages I've listed above (Leftovers and Rarities) on the whole prove that Paul McCartney is a very unique musical artist (songwriter, musician and singer).  I'm also considering "Longevity".   I my opinion, Paul McCartney is the #1, 2 or possibly  3rd best modern Musical Artist over the last 50-60 years.  I am thinking about artists that can do all 3 components...  composing, a great and versatile  instrumentalist,  and singing (multi-styles).

From a full career (again over 50 plus years) I believe only Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen are close to being on the same level as Paul.  Personally as a big fan, I consider Paul to be #1.  This "Leftovers and Rarities" proposed project is further proof that Paul is that Great of an Artist and Musical Force.  On these packages and project, we're talking about close to 100 tracks that were not on Paul's "original albums" and many are virtually "unknown" to casual fans of the  Beatles and casual fans of Paul's brilliant Solo Career.

                      Thanks for reading my post.

Paul is easily my favorite popular music artist, even his "leftover" music is great IMO. I wish more casual fans would give it a chance.

I agree 100% McCall.  When I look at the tracklists above,  I don't consider the majority of these songs to be "throwaways".  These leftovers are mostly in my opinion to be either good to very good relative to Paul's standards.  I hope Paul himself feels pretty much the same when he remembers and looks back at these leftovers that didn't make their original albums at the time.  These are songs that most casual Beatle and Paul Solo songs should at least know.  I think songs like "Flying to My Home", "Loveliest Thing", "On the Wings of a Nighingale", "Yvonne's the One" (and others) are terrific.

As I said earlier, Paul has too many products to push for this Fall and Christmas (Paul and Beatle stuff) but I'm hoping that by the Spring of 2023 there might be enough room for "Leftovers and Rarities."

                          Thanks for your imput McCall.

                            18. Don't Break the Promise (Paul and Eric Stewart Cowrite; on the "scratched" Return to Pepperland album)

                            19. Vanilla Sky (On the Vanilla Sky Soundtrack Album)

                            20. Maybe Baby (On the Maybe Baby Soundtrack Album; great and faster version than the original Buddy Holly song)

Just a couple of additional notes:

#5. The title is actually "Only Mama Knows".

                            16. Lindiane - Unreleased and was supposed to be on the "The Return to Pepperland" album that was never released.

#6 MIstress and Maid - Post Off the Ground release (Paul and Elvis Costello only performed this track "live" one time.  It was "An Evening with Paul McCartney and Friends at the Royal College of Music Benefit March 23,1995).

                            17. Squid - an uptempo instrumental  and was originally on the "Returned to Pepperland" album but never was released.  It was also on the Flaming Pie 2020 Remaster under the Part 3 Oobu Joobu Section.  Only if you bought the Flaming Pie very expensive full Archive Edition would you have it.  Great instrumental in my opinion and most casual Beatle or Paul McCartney fans wouldn't know it.

                            18. Don't Break the Promise - Unreleased until the 2020 Flaming Pie Archive Series package was released.  Cowritten by Paul McCartney and Eric Stewart that they wrote for Press to Play.  It was on the Part 4 Oobu Jooby Section of the Flaming Pie Archive Edition and is definitely a "Rarity".   Originally on the unfinished Return to Pepperland album.

                            19. Vanilla Sky - This is the Tom Cruise Movie where Paul McCartney wrote the title track and was nominated for an Academy Award.  Paul didn't end up winning but many people felt he should have.

#20 Maybe Baby - The movie of the same name starred Hugh Laurie and Joely Richardson.  The Soundtrack's Tracklist started off with Paul McCartney's Version and is a cover of the original Buddy Holly song.  Both Paul and Jeff Lynne produced the track that has a decided ELO edge to it and is a faster tempo than Buddy's original.  I love it!

Just a couple of typos on "my additonal points" on the immediate post above

                              # 16 Should be "Liindana".

                              # 6 Should be "From the Off the Ground Release"

And the unfinished Paul album should be listed as "Return to Pepperland".

                              Thanks everyone.

Thanks Nancy.  If you are in England now, have a great time.

                                  In London since Aug. 31st.

Today did the tour of the State Rooms at Buckingham Palace. No photography allowed of course. But one of the rooms I got to see was where Paul & Ringo were knighted, The Beatles got their M.B.E.s and Stella McCartney got her O.B.E.! The stool they kneel on was there too!! 🤩

Ate lunch at The Bag O’ Nails near Victoria Station Sept. 2nd. (Not the one where Paul met Linda! I think it’s just a bar.)
Finally was able to exchange 4 expired £10 notes (which were not kept up our noses) at the only location in London you could - the Bank of England which was only open for that purpose 11am to 3pm! We made it the just before 2pm! Only took 15 minutes, thankfully. We got fast-tracked since we had so few notes to exchange.
Then went to The Who Shop (as in Doctor Who, not the band!) Cool place! The owner was so nice - he walked us over to the bus stop to take it to the train station to get the Underground straight back to the station near our hotel - no changes of lines!
We were exhausted when we got back - my friend slept 3 hours! I just wanted to soak my swollen feet in the tub with cold water, get some ice, eat a snack, take a shower and wash my hair! She’s zonked out again and it’s only 10:35pm here! 😂 I’ll be up at least until midnight - we have to get up at 8am to get on Underground, then train to Henley-On-Thames! Friar Park, here we come!

Without a doubt the one thing your package proves is how incredibly prolific Paul is as a song writer. Not many artists continue to write great new music at his age. As you mentioned, Springsteen and Dylan are others that come to mind. How lucky for us that Paul decided not to "hang it up" like Billy Joel when it comes to still being creative and writing songs. His B-sides are better than most people's singles IMO and I love song like "Summer Of 59" for example. Your listing of "Who Cares" live performance in Grand Central Station was cool because I just was in there several times  taking the #7 train to Queens. The other thing I would mention is how there are so many good songs left off the original albums only added to special editions of the album. It makes you wonder about Paul's thought process in selecting songs for his albums. I loved that you added classical song  "Celebration" because it once again shows the depth and versatility of Paul's songwriting ability. Once again, excellent idea and would like to see it happen but truly doubt it which is a shame.

As I mentioned earlier, there were a few other songs that I considered for this project.   One song I have seen on Youtube and I've read about is:

My Old Friend - This was written by the great Carl Perkins in 1981.  Carl was Paul's guest in Montserrat for 8 days when Paul was recording Tug of War.  As you know, Paul and Carl sang together on the "Get It" track on Tug of War.  On the last day he was going to be there, he got Paul and Linda together and presented a gift to them.  The gift was a "song" that Carl had just written a few days earlier and he sang it to them using his guitar.

Funny story about the song.  About half way through the song, Paul was in tears and left the room.  It was when Carl sang the line..."think about me now and then, my old friend." Initially, Carl thought that Paul might have disliked the song.  Linda explained to Carl that the line was almost the exact words that John said to Paul on their last conversation a couple of months before his death.  Linda further explained that it helped Paul to finally connect with his grief over John's death.

The only record that "My Old Friend" appears on is Carl's album "Go Cat Go"  Instead of going home after the recording of "Get It"on Tug of War, Paul liked the song so much that he persuaded Carl to stay longer.  He wanted to go to George Martin's studio and do a more finished job on the song and also utilize George Martin since he was there.

In the studio Carl sang and played 2 guitar parts.  Paul played organ, rhythm guitar, bass and drums.  Paul added backing vocals to Carl's main vocals.  George Martin - Producer and String arrangements.

*From Paul McCartney Project on the Internet

                                        ___________________________________________________________________

I wonder if Paul can get permission from Carl's Heirs to allow Paul to put it on:

Leftovers and Rarities -- Starter CD

This would possibly be my first choice as a "Single" once the CD is released.  I've seen the video of Paul and Carl for the song but I don't think it has been ever been on a Paul McCartney Album including the Archive Collection Packages.

Judging by the what I've heard on Youtube, the song sounds great and what a story it has to tell.  Putting a song like this on a new CD like "Leftovers and Rarities" would really be a shot in the arm for the success of the CD.  From Carl Perkins' Family perspective, they would get a lot of royalites since Carl is credited as the sole writer.  Carl Perkins  passed away on January 19, 1998.   By the way,  Carl loved what Paul and George Martin did to the song.  Before his death, Carl said that "My Old Friend"meant more to him than any other songs he has written.  That includes a classic like "Blue Suede Shoes".

Just a thought for Paul and MPL.

How was New York City and how was the US Open?

                                            Glad your back home.

It's now Saturday.  We leave on Monday.  Driver is picking us up at 2;00pm.

Thanks for your comments about Leftovers and Rarities.

I have one more idea that I'm going to post before I head to Alaska.

                                            Sent you email last night.

Just read it.  I'll get back to you later.  It's just real busy right now trying to pack etc.
