Lewisohn's Book

walliebaby:
According to the NY Times: ?Tune In,? the first installment, takes the group through the end of 1962. Mr. Lewisohn said he expected the second volume to be out in 2020 (he won?t be pinned down, but guesses it will take the story to 1966), with the conclusion turning up about the time he turns 70. ?This is, very literally, my life?s work,? he said.
That isn't what I read. Yes, he said that the last volume would be out when he is 70, but that is in 15 years (he's 55) I kind of think he was joking a bit there, because in Beatlefan mag he says he is 40% done with Vol. 2. (the original publication years were supposed to be 2008, 2012 and 2016) So he was 5 years late. Lets hope Vol. 2 comes out in 2016 or 2017 at the latest. I will be very close to retirement then! There are 2 more parts to the Beatlefan interview, so we'll see if he says anything else in future issues.

P.S. In the Beatlefan interview they asked if Paul had any current input to the book. Short answer: No. Even though Mark worked for MPL for 15 years, Paul didn't want to get involved with this book. (He did, however, answer a couple of questions via email)Mark's quotes/interviews of Paul, George and George Martin, etc. are from years ago when he interviewed them. And thankfully, he did get in one interview with Neil Aspinall in 2007, the year before he died.

No matter when Mark Lewisohn finishes part 2 and 3, a Beatles-fan never retires!

Dang, 2020?
Yup. I'll be on Social Security by the time they're all released.
I'll be getting there myself by that time as well!
I guess he's saving the REALLY juicy stuff for when Paul and Ringo and the Beatle wives have shuffled off this mortal coil and can't argue with his facts.
Now that you mention it, I wonder...
omg...

I'm just quoting The New York Times. Given that the publication dates have been ever-changing, who knows? ETA: He'll be at the Fest in NYC, so if I get a chance I'll ask him.

Not from being a Beatles fan, no!

No, we don't. I've been one since they first came to America. I was in fifth grade Btw, I got May Pang's book today. I was half expecting it to be poorly written and make no sense, hence out of print. WRONG! It is, so far, VERY well written. Now, I'm wondering WHY it is out of print. I apologize for getting off topic.

I think it's only out of print because it was written so long ago.

80 GBP is a bit steep. Wonder why it is so much?
-
I agree--I just ordered a copy from the UK, but it's out of stock again If it were sold in the US I'm guessing it would be about $80 or so, but I had to pony up the $130 or so to get it from the UK. It includes two fairly nice hard bound books in a case. I bought the standard edition for me and a buddy of mine for his b'day a few months back. He's a big Beatles fan. Too bad it's not on sale here on the Macca site. I also had to buy the new LP set from the French Amazon site because of the issues with the inferior US pressing. The way I look at it is that sometimes you only get a chance to take one bite of the apple so you might as well take a mouth full!

The U.K. is waiting until they have enough orders before they print another run of the non-abridged version. $130 or so is a bit pricey. Maybe the cost will come down some if the demand is not so high?

I ordered the standard edition! Should be here next week!

Unfortunately the exact opposite will happen. They need to meet a certain amount of orders to start this next round of printing due to the high cost of making this book. You probably won't see the cost go down any further; there are three components that make of this edition; two books and the box. That is not the most efficient way of making a book while turning a profit.

Yes, I think you are right as from what I hear published costs (printing, etc.) are quite high and this looks to be a nice set. I thought the WOA Deluxe edition was overpriced too, but then you get it and see the amount of work that went into it and it starts to look like a pretty good deal Then there's also the pound/dollar thing. A twelve pound CD in England usually sells for about twelve dollars in the US, so that's why I said it probably would have sold for $80 or so had it been marketed in the US--I'm surprised that it's not as the US has such a much bigger market. The standard edition is a nice hardcover book and is quite reasonably priced on Amazon. Anyway, I have my order in--we'll see what happens
-
Finally after a two month wait after the second run pre-order the box set is shipping out. I'll be busy this summer.
-
Great news! Is this the Deluxe Set that is finally shipping??
-
Yes - the Extended Special Edition. Lewisohn did state they will continue printing this version as long as there is a demand for it; purchasing internationally at least for now.

That's only six more years. I doubt they'll be dead by then, either of them. And I doubt there's anything they'd have to be dead for, to write or read about any of them. Also, their kids will be around long after the author has passed away. They'd be able to refute any fictional allegations. Besides, Lennon pricked the Beatles myth in interviews long ago, like it was his mission to destroy the legend. I am sure Lewisohn will use a lot of that for material.

Yeay! I pre-ordered it from Amazon.co.uk!
