New Paul Compilation for 2024
-
@b-j-conlee
On my List of Paul's Post Beatles' Songs NOT on Paul's last compilation called "Pure McCartney" I forgot songs from Tug of War and Pipes of Peace. Here's additional songs from those 2 Albums NOT on 2016's Pure McCartney:Tug of War (The Song)
Take It Away
Somebody Who Cares
Ballroom Dancing
The Pound Is Sinking
Through Our Love
The Other Me
Keep Under Cover -
I'm going to try to "Wind Down" this Topic (New McCartney Compilation for 2024) here are my key points:
#1. One of our fellow Boardies posted that he didn't realize that Paul's last compilation "Pure McCartey" will be 8 Years Old in June 2024.2. As a consumer, if you bought Paul's last Compilation "Pure McCartney", I have listed many Paul Solo songs Not on that Compilation Package, a staggering number. In my opinion, a brand New 2024 Compilation (Including His Newest CDS Egypt Station and McCartney) could easily be a big CD package. On this thread, I am recommending a Standard Set (3 CDs) and a 4 CD Set for 2024 or even 2025.
#3. For Paul fans, we can't "repeat" the same mistake of 2016's Pure McCartney. On Paul's big Solo Hits and Universally Known Songs, Paul and his Team need to give a "Different Version" than the Studio Album version whenever possible. I have given those "Live Version Alternatives" on my Proposed New Compilation Package for either 2024 or even 2025 on this Thread.
For Paul's Legacy and for the loyal fans, this proposed New Compilation in 2024 or 2025 is very important. We can't end Paul's Post Beatles' Compilations with 2016's Pure McCartney. There are so many "Good to Great" Songs missing from "Pure McCartney". Thanks

@b-j-conlee
On my summary above, I meant to say that a future Compilation for 2024/2025 would be broken down into a Standard 3 CD Set/Edition and a Deluxe 4CD Edition. -
@b-j-conlee
On my Summary Post immediately about above, the most recent Paul CDs were Egypt Station and McCartney 3. -

After a good night's sleep, my mind is so much clearer today. Paul McCartney has only had 4 Compilations since 1970 (his entire Post Beatles) Career. Here are the 4:-
Wings Greatest - Nov 1978
-
All the Best - Nov 1987
-
Wingspan - May 2001
-
Pure McCartney - June 2016
Of the 4, I think Wingspan was easily the Best. At least, that Compilation was in the right direction by dividing their Track Lists into 2 Halves - Hits and History. They included both Hits and Some great Deep Cuts. They even had one great B-Side - Daytime Nighttime Suffering. Wingspan covered Paul Albums from McCartney 1 through Tug of War and Pipes of Peace.
I think the last Compilation "Pure McCartney" was arguably the worst. McCartney albums after Wingspan included Press to Play, Flowers in the Dirt, Off the Ground, Flaming Pie, Run Devil Run, Driving Rain, Chaos and Creation and Memory Almost Full. With the exception of Press to Play, this might have been the greatest string of Albums in Paul's Solo Career.
Except for Flaming Pie, none of those great albums were represented well on "Pure McCartney". In fact, Flowers in the Dirt, Run Devil Run, and Driving Rain had "zero" tracks represented. Off the Ground only had 1 track and Memory Almost Full only had 2. One reason I thought "Pure McCartney" was poorly done was because so many of Paul's Solo albums were hardly represented particularly on a 4 CD Compilation Package.
I'll get back to you on other analysis on Paul McCartney's past Compilations. -

After thinking about a good title for Paul's next (and possibly last) Career Spanning Compilation, the one I like best is:New Classics and Hidden Gems
For a new compilation, this implies songs that could become "Future Classics"and Hidden Gems implies "Good to Great Deep Cuts" that were "unheralded" at the time of the their Album's Release
.
The main problem with the last Compilation "Pure McCartney" was that most of the tracks were "Repeats" of the first 3 "Best Of" Packages. Worst of all, they were not only the same songs but they were the exact same versions."New Classics and Hidden Gems" would be totally different. Almost all the tracks are really good deep cuts (Not Hits or Designated Singles) and I would strongly suggest "Live Versions" especially when they were better than the Album versions.
Similar to "Pure McCartney" I am proposing 2 Distinct Sets. The first one would be a "Standard Edition" (3 CD's) and the 2nd One would be the Deluxe (5 CD's). For both the Standard and Deluxe Editions, it would be a total of 160 separate tracks.
This would be larger than Paul's previous Compilations."New Classics and Hidden Gems" would cover McCartney's Post Beatles Career from 1970 to Paul's
Last Album McCartney 3 in 2020. The overall goal of this New Compilation is to prove that Paul McCartney's Post Beatles Career has been hugely successful. If you ask many Beatle Fans about Paul's Solo Career their Description might say something like "Hit and Miss" and his overall Post Beatles Career has been inconsistent. Our aim with this newest Compilation would be to change that perception. Besides covering many of Paul's really good to great Album Cuts, it would also include Rare "Live" Versions, and relatively unknown Paul songs from Movie and Special Soundtrack Albums.I would also not include songs like Bip Bop, Mumbo, Fuh You...songs that Lyrically Say Next to Nothing. By and Large, Paul's Post Beatles Career has been filled with Paul songs with smart and mature lyrics and songs that are intelligent and meaningful. As always, Paul's music and melodies Post Beatles has been just as consistent with his Beatle Days. It's hard to believe that Paul's Worldwide Fame with the Beatles was relatively short (like 6 or 7 years) whereas his Solo Career is now over 50 Years. This is why a "Career Spanning Compilation" at this time is so important.

@b-j-conlee For me, "Through Our Love" is Paul's "Here, There and Everywhere." It's that good!!
-
@beatles4ever-1
I 100% agree about "Through Our Love". I also really like "Only Love Remains" from Press to Play. -
@b-j-conlee
Now that Macca's Post Beatles' Career is well over 50 Years Old, I believe it's time for an Up-To-Date Compilation that gives equal billing to Paul's 2nd Half (from 1989's Flowers in the Dirt till Today). That is why Paul needs a new Compilation in 2024 or 2025. Up to this point, Paul's 1st 4 Compilations have focused too much on Paul's 70's Period when he was still consistently making the Billboard Charts. That is where Paul's Solo Career is so underrated in my opinion.
My Standard Edition of "New Classics and Hidden Gems" begins with my proposed 3 CD Set.New Classics and Hidden Gems

Let's not forget "Waterfalls and No More Lonely Nights". Paul was really on a roll with great Ballads in the 80's. -

Disc 1 focuses on the 70's and it goes into the early 80's. But rather than the hits, it's more about the "Deeper Cuts" -

@b-j-conlee I don't think "Driving Rain" deserved any songs from it. That, to me, is his low point. Never liked any part of it....starting with the cheap, cheesy album cover.
-
@beatles4ever-1
I do agree that "Driving Rain" is one of his "Lower Tier" Albums but all of his inferior works have a few tracks that are worthwhile. In my opinion, there are 4 or 5 hidden gems that deserve to be included or considered on a "career spanning" compilation. Besides "Lonely Road" and "Magic", I also consider songs like "Your Way, About You, Your Loving Flame, Back in the Sunshine Again and She's Given Up Talking" to be in that "Hidden Gems" group. I always thought the lyrics in "She's Given Up Talking" to be quite clever and I like the music too. -
Lonely Road was a wonderful opener. As I say, From a Lover to a Friend was brilliant for a minute, before it diminished into complete crapola.... Talk about a wasted song... Driving Rain is a great song.... not so much the opening lyrics... but no mention of a dustbin lid, or rolling it all up into a ball.... the latter, in which I love.... Your Way and I Do are great.... And, whilst I can never understand why Paul didn't attribute too many lyrics to this.... I think "Heather" is a great song!
The funny thing about this album.... it gets criticised because it has "too many" songs.

@b-j-conlee
On my proposed "New Classics and Hidden Gems" Compilation (3 CD's) Standard Edition, I'm pretty happy overall with my selections in the "Standard Edition". I went as recent as Egypt Station from 2018.
Now onto my selections in the Deluxe Edition (4 or 5 CD's). The more I'm thinking, this could be Paul's last Compilation in his overall Discography. My goal would be to save the "Best" till his last Career Spanning Compilation of his Post- Beatles' Career.
