Help! album extremely underrated
-
This album never gets mentioned as 1 of the top-tier Beatles albums and even gets slighted when compared to the Hard Day's Night album. My guess is 2 things hurt its reputation: 1). it's considered a soundtrack & in the U.S. before 1987, side 2 was incidental music from the film and 2). there are 2 covers. But, song-for-song, Help! is hard to beat. There are both John & Paul classics throughout & many of the songs are innovative & sound nothing like what the Beatles did before (Ticket to Ride, Hide Your Love Away, Yesterday). Tell Me What You See sounds like an early Grateful Dead tune. I love the reverb on I Need You. Even the covers are interesting & rock. The only "clunker" I can hear is "You Like Me Too Much". Help! needs a reappraisal & deserves to be in the conversation as one of the Beatles best.

I agree with you, for the most part. I don't think You Like Me Too Much Is ac clunker, though maybe in the Beatles universe it might be. Still, it is about like What Goes On, What You're Doing, or a couple of other. Which many might consider clunkers!

Are you kidding?! I LOVE What You're Doing and I wish Paul would add it to his setlist!

I love it too. But it is not as good as Hey Jude or Let It Be. You Like Me Too Much is fun to listen too, and I like it. But it is not as good as Something or Here Comes The Sun.

Then why did you mention it in the same breath as What Goes On? (a horrible song!) You can't compare Beatles songs from mid '60's to late '60's. Most of the later ones come out ahead, especially George's songs!

It's a great album, but still love A Hard Day's Night more. Especially these tracks: AHDN/I Should Have Known Better/If I Fell/Can't Buy Me Love/You Can't Do That

I can compare whatever I please with whatever I please. Please Please Me is a better song than You Know My Name (Look Up The Number). There, I compared an early song with a later song, and I am right. I just disagree with you. To my ears, What Goes On, What You're Doing, and You Like Me Too Much are of the same caliber. Good, fair to middle Beatle songs. It's not my fault they set the bar so high!

I was half-kidding, hence the And of course anything early is better than YKMN (LUTN)! And I did say "most" of the later ones come out ahead.

You are right that Help! got chopped up in the U.S. and side two ended up divided between the Beatles VI and Yesterday and Today albums, and I've Just Seen A Face became the lead off on the U.S. version of Rubber Soul. As a whole it is one of their best. I also love What You're Doing and Tell Me What You See. And Dizzie Miss Lizzie, wow, one of John's best covers! In fact I think I'll listen to it today.
-
A Hard Day's Night and Help! LP's were also the first English imports I bought in the U.S., because of what they had done to the soundtracks over here. Then when I heard the better sound quality of the Parlophone albums compared to the Capitol ones, I bought all the English LP releases.
-
I like what you're doing. You like me too much and wHat goes on are in my bottom 5 though. But, on topic, I like A Hard Days night overall better than help. But there are songs on Help! That I would rate higher than anything on AHDN (Help! Ticket to Ride, Yesterday, I've Just Seen A face). AHDN is consistent but Help! Has more highs and lows.
-
Help! an "extremely underrated album?" Really???
-
Not just Help! I think all the albums before Rubber Soul and Revolver are underrated. I'm basing my opinion on what I've read from fans and crtics and what I've heard from the Beatles themselves.
-
I would be suspect of any "ratings" or "rankings" of Beatle LPs before Sgt. Peppers since there were UK versions and USA versions that were very different. It may LOOK like LPs are underrated when recordings like Sgt Peppers and Abbey Road are always given high accolades in BEST ALBUMS lists. But that in no way detracts from what a great debut LP Please Please Me was, or how amazing A Hard Day's Night is, or any other LP. People may generally agree that Abbey Road is a better LP than Help, but that is also an opinion and not a provable fact. Help is great!
-
A Hard Day's Night was their first A+, 5 star, two thumbs up super album. And every song is Lennon/McCartney. That's hard to follow.
-
I even like "You Like Me Too Much." A lot. Sounds rather subtle and intriguing, to me. Urgent in an understated way.
