The three McCartney shows I attended in 2017 WERE NOT in baseball stadiums with 40,000 fans. They were in enclosed arenas with 15,000 fans. Check the facts Bruce. Austin 2018 was outdoors, yes, but the acoustics were very good and yes, Paul sounded great. IMO, reality is ACTUALLY attending a concert in person and making a sound decision, instead of listening to a cell phone recording from the 50th row. Yes, his voice is weaker, duh, but the shows are still incredible; exciting, thoughtful, loud, and thrilling.
No, the sound is not better in a basketball arena, fer god's sake. They're not designed for acoustics. The echo and crowd noise cover a multitude of sins. But if you prefer imaginary Paul to real Paul, go and enjoy. I prefer to treasure the memories of when he sounded decent.
100% correct
Aren't you listening to a recording from the same venues to form your opinion?
What venues have you ever seen him in other than indoor, usually sports arenas and outdoor venues ?
I much prefer indoor to outdoor concerts. There I see a considerable difference in the quality of the sound, not his voice, the overall sound.
The only non sporting arenas or outdoor venues I can remember seeing him perform at were Grand Central Terminal (not built for acoustics), The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel Las Vegas (i believe it's just for concerts) and Irving Plaza in NY. I have seen him often and in comparing these locations to arenas the main difference's, they were obviously smaller, the sound was clearer and a little louder, no difference in voice quality. That's about it.
Of course he doesn't sound like he did in his younger days no rational person would expect that. I don't miss the opportunity to see him as often as possible, obviously I really enjoy his concerts. If you don't think his voice is worth going to see than that's your opinion, but he is still selling a lot of tickets all over the world, so his shows are still in demand, why should he stop now, or retire soon?
So after all the smoke and mirrors fade, you admitted the point I was making all along:
Of course he doesn't sound like he did in his younger days no rational person would expect that.
Paul's voice is a shadow of what it was and we all know it. If you're able to ignore that in the din of a concert, go with my blessing. And I'll say it again: He should retire before he truly starts to embarrass himself, and that point is getting close, whether some fans choose to admit it or not.
No Bruce, I did not admit the point you were making all along, I obviously do not agree with you. He doesnt't sound like he did in his younger days is no where near his voice is a shadow of what it was, is that what you really got out of it??? If you expect him to sound like he did when he was younger then there is no point in debating that with you. That is just not rational, is that what you expect from a man in his 70's ?
Once again aren't you listening to a recording from the same venues to form your opinion? I didn't see a response to that question. "no the sound is not better in a basketball arena for God sakes, they're are not designed for acoustics" I believe you wrote
What venues have you seen him in other than indoor, usually sports arenas and outdoor venues?
You are entitled to your opinion about him retiring, but once again if he is selling out to mostly great reviews your opinion is certainly in the minority.
Most recognize his voice won't sound the same as it did at age 25. Thats fine. What Bruce is trying to say(i dont want to speak for him) and myself as well is it sounds bad for any age. It is very wobbily. Even his speaking voice is shaky. It doesn't matter if you are watching a youtube clip or witnessing it live.
To say he sounds "great" is not being honest. He doesn't sound great. Abe is doing most of the lead vocals, and Paul is more of a guiding vocal. One only needs to hear the first few bars of Maybe Im Amazed to know it isn't good.
By the time the tour hits the US, ES will be a distant memory for most. Don't expect any surprises. I am sitting this tour out, as it isn't worth the $$$ at this point to hear the same songs and stories over and over and over. Embarrassing.
If you are putting down the the venue Paul is performing at then it only makes sense that the youtube recording of the venue that Bruce is listening to, that he feels has bad sound and acoustics, has to be of lesser quality than listening to it live. That's why I asked him to clarify that.
You can have the opinion it sounds bad for any age, you are certainly entitled to it, I don't agree. To support my opinion I pointed out Paul still is playing to sold out shows and good to great reviews all over the world. So my statement was why should he stop??
You said most recognize that his voice won't sound the same as it did at 25, which is true. Bruce took my statement that of course he doesn't sound like he did in his younger days, no rational person would expect that as I admitted his point that Paul's voice is a shadow of what it was. So there's a BIG difference from most recognize that his voice won't sound the same as it did at 25 and Bruce's conclusion.
I would love to hear some of my favorite songs played live, but since I have been seeing him he only changes a few and to me the concerts are still well worth the price of admission. That's why I go. I know what to expect. Most are attending his concerts for the first time so they enjoy the stories. I've seen him a lot and I don't mind the stories at all. I'm looking forward to seeing him again.
I think we are guilty of getting off topic because this is a set list critique and not a debate about his voice. We are not going to change each others opinion and that is fine.
