Grammy nominations

Let's not forget that "Hey Jude" lost out to "Little Green Apples" back in the sixties. Never much credibility in my mind.
They always snubbed The Beatles. And the Grammys are more of a joke today than they were back in the '60s.
Let's not exaggerate: They didn't always snub the Beatles. They won song of the year for Michelle and album of the year for Sgt. Pepper, among others. But yeah, there were some shocking losses to lesser artists in the '60s. The Grammys have always run 2 or 3 steps behind popular music and popular culture in general, and often go with safe and bland choices (e.g. Glen Campbell winning record of the year in '68 or whenever it was).

If Hey Jude was nominated for a Grammy and didn't win, that pretty much says what these awards mean...Really???!!!

David Bowie, Led Zep, Neil Young, Black Sabbath nominated in Best Rock Album category If "New" had come out sooner, Paul's would have snared a nom, too--or is it too "pop" --more than rock? Would that have prevented it?
Probably in the "Pop" Category. Although when I loaded songs from it on my iPod, they were automatically listed as "Rock" if that's of any importance. If he were in the Pop Category and had released "NEW" earlier, however, he would probably have lost to some American Idol person again. I mean if Kelly Clarkson could beat him.....She's a good singer, but..... :
The Grammys are the singing world's equivalent of getting picked for a game in gym class. If you're popular and know the right people, you're always first out of the line.
Good analogy. I always thought picking teams in gym was cruel and unusual punishment!! Needless to say, I was NOT athletic and knew I would be last or next to last when "getting picked". Humiliating. Painful. Hated the teacher for letting that "choosing thing" go on and on and on.....I guess that it is still happening. ops:
Always came down to me and the kid in the back brace in gym. We were both good at dodgeball, though: him because everyone was afraid to throw a ball at him, and me because of my skinniness; there was nothing to aim at! I think the Grammy nominations are a combination of knowing the right people, and members who are too lazy to think of anyone besides Bruce Springsteen and U2 to nominate.
LOL. I was really good a dodgeball too!! Somehow, my reflexes were great! I did have that knack and quickness. Problem was, that's what we did at recess in grade school...not in Junior High or High School. My best "sport" didn't make the cut! Yes, the voters for Grammy nominations follow a certain pattern, as do the Oscar nominations. If Meryl Streep or Judi Densch make a movie, it's an automatic nomination. Years ago Densch was in a movie for maybe 5 minutes, at most,("Shakespeare In Love") and won the Best Supporting Actress award. Travesty! Best Guest Appearance maybe, but nothing else. That award should have gone to Lynn Redgrave for her great performance...and she was in the movie from beginning to end... in "Gods and Monsters," a terrific movie from 1998 starring Ian McKellen. She was great in that...as was Ian and Brendan Fraser.

"Gods and Monsters" was great, and you make good points, although I'd say the Oscars have a better track record than the Grammys. Hey, do you think Streep will be nominated for "Queenie Eye"?

IMO - These nominations really don't mean much. If McCartney gets some nominations for "New" next year (doubt it) then I will be happy and think it has some meaning.

It's ALWAYS better to be mentioned than to not be mentioned. Any publicity is good. Look what it's done for the twerkin Miley (put that tongue away) Cyrus. :

...and I believe they (the Grammys) were relatively new when the Beatles came on the scene and they (Grammy voters) were still busy honoring artists from earlier eras.....Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, etc. It's a wonder "Sgt Pepper" won when you consider how conservative (and old) the voters were and rock was still pretty new and not really recognized as "legitimate music". There was no such thing as rock music critics or voters. That does not explain, however, the perplexing win of "Little Green Apples" over "Hey Jude". The voters did eventually fall in love with Simon & Garfunkel and then Stevie Wonder and honored them for whatever they did, however.

beatlesfanrandy:
Interesting nominations. Of those categories he is in I think Wings Over America has the best chance. We will just have to wait until next year for NEW to have its day.
It's kinda' Paul vs The Stones in two categories...Best Boxed Set and Best Rock Song. The voters have sort of never honored the Stones with so much as a boo, so they could sort of make up for that now. We'll see.

It could well happen!! She stood there and laughed and acted as if she knew why she was there!!! She was a huge Beatles fan and was at Shea Stadium when they played there. She sort of goes gaga when she chats with or about Paul.

I saw the most beautiful picture Mary McCartney took of Meryl Streep during the Queenie Eye video shoot. Meryl was just beaming, really glowing. Obviously she thinks a great deal of Macca. Be cool if they're friends.

Have you ever seen the video of her presenting McCartney lifetime achievement Grammy award, looked like she would not have minded being more than "friends" - lol
-
She introduced him in 1990 for a lifetime acheivement award & it just shows how much she loves him...

True, but those categories are not usually mentioned on the air anymore. Outside chance of Best Rock Song, but we'll see. One recent Grammy tradition seems to be that whoever performs on the show usually wins an award, so watch out for that!

If Hey Jude was nominated for a Grammy and didn't win, that pretty much says what these awards mean...Really???!!!
It lost to "Mrs. Robinson" by Simon and Garfunkel, which was also a worthy record. No shame in that -- actually one of the less embarrassing Grammy selections from that era. Much more disturbing is that the White Album was never nominated for album of the year, and Abbey Road lost to Blood, Sweat and Tears.

The 1968 Record of the Year was Mrs. Robinson The 1968 Song of the Year was Little Green Apples written by Bobby Russell and performed by O.C. Smith. It also won Best Country Song Hey Jude was nominated for Record, Song and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group but failed to win any!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hey_Jude

What song did Kelly Clarkson win with? She beat out Sir Paul didn't she? Song of the Year? There are too many award shows...can't keep them straight anymore.

She won Grammys in 2005 and 2012 for Best Pop Vocal Album! Don't know who she was up against--they only list the winners.
