"SIMPLY HAVING A WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS TIME"

Way better than 'Happy Christmas' which just grates, especially the kids choir, ouch!
The Children's choir sings...."ding, dong, ding, dong.... Yeah. That and the pounding synthesizer grates....but, as someone mentioned, I, too, find myself singing along to the song nevertheless...when I'm by myself in my car, of course!!! On the Shins' version the children singing is much better. I'm pleased I bought that "Christmas Rules" CD a couple of years ago. The Shins' version is on that. Don't hear that on the radio, however. (I also try and sing along to "Oh Holy Night", and pretend I can hit that "Fall on your knees"...ultra high part. Love Michael Crawford's version of that much better than Josh Groban's. His doesn't seem to get as much air time, however. What really grates is Celine Dion singing "John's song". Ditto Lee Ann Rimes singing Brenda Lee's "Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree. She just sounds boozy. Lee Ann, I mean. There's too many damn versions of too many songs. Nat King Cole's..."The Christmas Song" should be the only one played. IMO. No one else should ever touch that, yet they do!!)
Wait a minute! eweanme is saying she/he likes Wonderful Christmastime and that the children's choir in Happy Xmas is the one that grates!!! (the ding done ding dong is in Paul's song, not John's!)
-

This is one of the few Paul songs that I find just totally annoying.
Bah Humbug Bruce! (to each his own)
Hey, I may be the only person on here who LIKES Ebony and Ivory, so I'm hardly a total humbug!
-
A related story: I was grocery shopping yesterday and heard a recorded Christmas carol being sung over the "When I'm 64" music. Strangely, it fit!

"Bah Humbug" only applies to Christmas stuff! (you know, Ebeneezer Scrooge)

I bet you that was The Fab Four (tribute band) They have an entire album of Christmas songs done using Beatles songs. It's called HARK! (take off on HELP!) It's really good!

I have different ones by the Fab Four... -Have Yourself a FAB-ulous Little Christmas -A Fab Four Christmas and then one with the Spongetones and the Fab Four A FAB-ulously Merry Christmas (which is probably a bootleg. As I look at it, it also has stuff by Paul, Ringo, John, George & The Beatles)

Lol-I like E & I as well as Freedom and Motor of Love, but not crazy about the much beloved Let Me Roll It...lol But I do like Wonderfull Christmastime, so I guess that keeps me off the 'bah humbug' list:-D
-
I've heard the new version several times now too and wondered what it was. It's not a cover version. It's still Paul signing, but the music is different. I like it better than the original.
-
A group just sang it on the Today show. I wouldn't have recognized it as a McCartney song except I know it is. They did well.

As Maxwell Smart would say, Ebony and Ivory I really like, but Motor of Love and Freedom I ain't so crazy about.... time has done nothing to help Motor of Love... and Freedom was - and is - pretty, pretty ordinary.

Macca teamed up with the a capella group Straight No Chaser for a remake (remix) of his "Wonderful Christmastime." Good decision, Paul. It does sound much better than the one you originally recorded...smoothed out and, well, just better."
-
Having heard the new Straight No Chaser version, it's very well put together, but I still much prefer the original. The new version plods along too much and I really miss the more organic original with the synth. I guess if you don't like the experimental approach to the McCartney 11 album then you'll not appreciate the '79 version which was recorded during the same sessions in the summer.
-
I just heard it on the radio, and even though I have been kinda down this Christmas, the song made me feel happy and I was singing along too.
-
It's a happy feel good song not that I particularly enjoy every single second of it, there might be too many "ding dongs" (LOL) but that's a trivial quibble. Toris mentioned "Motor of Love"--I've defended that song elsewhere, here. I sort of love it, really. "Freedom" I agree sounds rather ordinary like a campfire sing along.

Well that explains it! The synth is 'pounded on' without following the melody. And no, I'm not a big fan of McCartney II.

Well, I totally love it. It's a gorgeous song, beautifully sung by Paul. Really like the 10 CC sound. (Was that the name of the group?...the ones that sang "I'm Not In Love".

It does recall 10cc, and I like it a lot myself, but it also recalls the Cars, since their keyboardist Greg Hawkes plays on this song; think of their song "Drive."
