Who has been a Beatles fan for 50 years?

Has anyone read that book "Growing Up With The Beatles"? That book was what I based my impressions on, for trying to figure out what it was like at the time. Was that book close to anyone's experience?
Yes and most definitely YES. My whole life revolved around THEM. My only regret is not being able to see them live, and came so close to the opportunity.
When they played San Diego the one and only time in 1965, some neighbor friends of mine were going and they invited me. My parents said no. I was only 8 but I remember that!
I'll bet you do!

YES! I have that book by Ron Schaumburg and I even wrote to him and received a reply! I sent him this pic of me at age 13: (He had a similar photo of himself in the book)

Randy....similar circumstances here. My grandfather lived 6 blocks away from the Cow Palace in San Francisco. I begged, pleaded, cajoled, cried, etc. to let me go and visit my grandfather and see the Beatles there in 1964, but they said "NO!". I still resent them for that, along with not letting me go to the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967...just a couple miles from our house.

In 1963 I was 9 years old and lived in England. Have been a fan from the beginning. First single "She Loves You", first ep "Twist and Shout" but had to wait until 1967 for my first album "Sgt Peppers".

Haha, yes, I know the picture you mean!

I know the feeling! I was 11 in 1966 and the Beatles were coming to Cleveland Stadium. I begged & pleaded too, but Mom said "We'll go next year." Well, as we all know, there was no "next year" tour! She will never live it down. I made sure I took my daughter to see N 'Sync, The Backstreet Boys, and Hanson!

Same thing with me: my mother would not let me go see them, as I was "too young." (Speaking of which, my wish for years, at birthdays, seeing the first star, etc., was "Please let Paul wait for me to grow up, please, please, please." Then, around the time of his second marriage, it suddenly struck me that I had gone from being too young for him, to being too old for him! What happened?)

That's really cool! I bought my son a ticket to see Paul in 2002. Even though I couldn't go with him because we live on opposite sides of the country. I saw Driving USA in Oakland, my son saw Back in the U.S. in Raleigh.

I just saw this again from 2011 & thought it would fit here in this thread.

Me! I was thirteen. Although watching Ed Sullivan was a Sunday family ritual, on that night (and subsequent nights) I watched by myself in my Grandmother's bedroom. I, too, was not allowed to see them. Instead I sat at the kitchen table, listened to local radio, and painted my Paul McCartney model which I had received as a sort of consolation prize.

I'm confused! You say you did see them?, but what was the part about the consolation prize? (btw, I had, and still have, that model of Paul that I painted!)

I said I watched them in my grandmother's bedroom. I also meant that I did not go to a concert.

Yes, 50 years. I got Meet The Beatles in 1964 when I was 7. Had collections of the original U.S. albums on vinyl in the 60's, English and Japanese vinyl imports in the 70's, the original CD's in '87, the CD remasters in 2009, and vinyl remasters in 2012, and full circle to the U.S. albums on CD in 2014...Wonder what's next?
I have to quit speed reading. I thought you said I got to meet the Beatles when I was 7... anyways...yes count me in too!
I did the EXACT same thing!!

I have fond memories of mum and dad playing Beatles 45s on our radiogram - I was 7 and sang along - all wrong words - mum worked in a record shop so we had a good choice but I always wanted to hear The Beatles. My dad was a violinist but a bit like Nigel Kennedy, didn't tow the line So pop music, especially Beatles, was great as far as he was concerned.

I see! Yeah, I was only 8, 9, 10 and 11 during their touring years and missed out on seeing them in person.

I grew up in the Midwest. Closest place the Beatles came was Kansas City but I did not know that. The local radio station had a contest to see the Beatles at Red Rocks in Denver. My best friend and I were sure we would win, but we did not. We pleaded with our parents to take us to Denver but got told no. So we took the bus to the airport to get airplane tickets. One problem--we had no money so our parents were called to come pick us up. We were in big trouble, but the 2 of us often found ourselves in trouble.

Great story! Money's a difficult concept when you're young. I'll never forget once when my mother was complaining about not having enough money, and my little sister, maybe ten years old at the time, said, "Just go to the bank. They'll give you money!"
