50 Years Ago This Sunday

B J Conlee:
I thought Paul and Ringo were the highlight at the end. Ringo may not have the best voice but he is a natural performer. I thought Paul sounded great on I Saw Her Standing There and Hey Jude. I also thought that Paul and Ringo looked very happy together. It is so ironic that the 2 Beatles that liked performing the most are still around. I always thought that John and George liked the studio far better than performing.
I thought Paul and Ringo were competing to see which one could answer Letterman--or something. They did not seem that friendly b/c they didn't even look at each other while answering questions. But, when they started playing together, different story. All of the comradery came back.

^ the greatest band in human history...indeed
-
What a great tribute! I really liked all the performances, and yes, Paul and Ringo ROCKED!! Now I can't wait to see Ringo this summer in New Mexico!!
-
Paul and Ringo's performances were golden! Ringo got a little hoarse towards the end, but they really got in sync and looked to be having a genuinely good time.
-
I might be mistaken, but it seems they cut down the intermezzo to "Here Comes the Sun". I'm thinking it was played intact at the show, (the middle part with the synthesizer..."Sun, Sun, Sun, Here it comes..."), but was cut down to two passes in the broadcast. Am I mistaken? EDIT: Nope. They also cut down the ending on Hey Jude and removed Sir Paul performing, "Magical Mystery Tour". At the show, Hey Jude was performed with the modern sing-along. The boys. Then the girls. And then all the people sang. The broadcast was cut to just the people singing. Hmmm...Maybe us boys didn't do so good...

Agreed Sur Steven! I could have lived without several of the performers' performances (would keep Keith Urban and the other dude with him--who knew he could play like that!). I was watching to see Paul and Ringo. Not happy that their performance got cut so much. It was clearly cut and they were still playing when it ended. Very disappointed in the producers' cut. Does anyone know if a DVD will be sold? Even so, I wonder if Paul and Ringo's performance will even be on it in its entirely

I didn't know Keith Urban could pick like that. WOW! Paul even seemed impressed.
Keith Urban could give Clapton a run for his money! He's that good!!!
-
Aside from Paul and Ringo...who finally got the show really energized, I really liked Joe Walsh, Jeff Lynn and Dhani perform "Something". Gorgeous. And I liked the young British singer who did "In My Life". Dave Growl is always great on anything he does ("Hey Bulldog".) It was neat to see his young daughter and how she reacted to the songs...she loved The Beatles! The Ed Sullivan stage-crew commentary could have been a show all by itself. Great insight and told us things we didn't know about that big event 50 years ago.

EC is vastly overrated. He was BRILLIANT at Concert For George, but post that he has done what Sinatra warned of...and I paraphrase... "Treat your audience with contempt and it's endsville baby..."

Couldn't have really asked for a better show than last night. Brilliantly done and even a lifelong hater of Beatles covers like me was so impressed with the ones last night. To see Paul and Ringo singing along and grooving in the crowd was so cool. Ringo's set was great, and when Paul got onstage it had that vibe and aura of the master showing everyone how it's still done. Getting chills just typing this...glad I DVR'd it, must watch again!
-
Great tribute for the boys. I wish Broken Bells performance (and I love her) from the letterman show could have been included (really liked that one)...but I guess then the show could have gone on all night! And why not? They deserve it! Great show!

The show was fantastic. Loved it all. Paul and Ringo really enjoyed the artists' performances. The performers seemed genuine in paying homage to The Beatles. Did you catch Yoko dancing in the front to "I Saw Her Standing There"? Funny. I really liked that Ringo sang a few songs by himself. His performance of "Boys" was fantastic. Paul's voice on "Birthday" was a bit sketchy, but then he nailed it on all the rest. The Letterman interview snippets seemed a bit stilted and awkward.

Such a wonderful night of music last night! I loved Paul and Ringo's performance, Yellow Submarine was such a crowd favourite and so much fun to sing! I like that Paul and Ringo were sitting together and laughing/smiling throughout the show-thoroughly enjoying the performers and celebrating this historic event. I loved the backstage people from 1964 on the Ed Sullivan Show-what insight! I would have loved to hear more!! They said the Beatles rehersal was taped and fans were there? I didn't know that. I would love to see that. I loved seeing everyone's reaction to the songs. People were all bobbing their heads at the same time...so great to see real Beatle fans enjoying the music. I really liked seeing Nancy's reaction--she was really into it. Yoko's dancing was kinda out there but she was having fun, so who cares! I wonder how many songs Yoko knows, she seemed to really enjoy later songs, like Revolution and Don't Let Me Down compared to others. Loved that Dhani was on stage to help sing one of George's songs. It would have been cool if Sean got on stage to help sing/play one of John's songs. Love how they had the old footage/new interview of actual fans who were there that night in 1964. That was such a highlight. I have always wondered where those fans are now. The David Letterman interview was kind of awkward at times, I felt. I love the part where Dave says, that the beatles could only hear Ringo's cymbals to know where they were in the songs and Paul was like, 'well, we were a good band and would go by our movements, body language..." I thought that was a good answer because it was it's true. Same songs, same people every night, you can just look at each other and know where the set is at. Makes sense. I like when Paul said he was not sure if he wanted to participate in a tribute to himself Loved the bios too. And the Ed Sullivan clips. Going back and forth from the Ed Sullivan clips and the performances, really hit me: "wow, who knew 50 years ago when that happened we'd be celebrating it 50 years later" Remarkable. I wish they would've had more Beatle clips playing in the background as the songs were being performed. I love at the end when Paul and Ringo took a moment to acknowledge George and John. I don't know about all of you, but I was REALLY missing George and John last night. It was such a great night and seeing all the old clips of the four of them together made me wish John and George were sitting alongside Paul and Ringo. Though I am sure they were there in spirit.

I liked Sean playing air guitar. No don't think that was it at all...at least Linda had an excuse. It was the 70s & she was in a band called Wings! And she wasn't 80 something. LOL!

Let the lady dance!! It's the least damage she's done in 50 years!

Who was the woman sitting beside her? They were dancing together during "I Saw Her Standing There." I was hoping Sean would play. Julian was in Ethiopia. Didn't see Cynthia nor Pattie there.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing, and Linda, too.
