What Is The Extent of Beatles Outtakes on Bootlegs?

Yes, sometimes the take callouts were jokes. There weren't over 100 takes of "Not Guilty" (probably just felt like it).
From what I understand George often worked slow and methodically and took a fair amount of time to get things right. On my Abbey Road bootleg there's a 37th or 38th take of Something which is another outtake. I think that's one of the main reasons John was supposedly finding excuses to be out of the studio during George songs For him it must have been much more interesting working with Paul.

I took Randy's advice to heart and it does seem like there's some good books out there that try and catalog the Beatles outtakes. I did order a couple of books on Amazon in order to check them out. Here are the titles: The 910's Guide to the Beatles Outtakes (Doug Sulpy) The Unreleased Beatles: Music & Film (Richie Unterberger) Black Market Beatles: The Story Behind the Lost Recordings (Jim Berkenstat)

All good ones. The only problem is that books are never up to date. New releases come out every day (almost).

The very first Beatles' bootleg was called (K)um Back and was released in Sept. 1969, 8 months before Let It Be, and consisted of Get Back Sessions outtakes. It was very popular and it was even sold in record stores for awhile. I remember buying this in a record store thinking it was an official Beatles release.

I met Jim (Berkenstadt) in Cancun at the Beatles 50th Anniversary celebration. Super nice guy and he gave us all a copy of his latest book, The Beatle Who Vanished (about Jimmie Nicol)

Get the book! I haven't had time to read it yet, but I understand that he completely fell off the radar. Not sure if he's still alive.

Ask and ye shall receive...I've reviewed that book, too : http://rnrchemist.blogspot.com/2014/01/book-review-beatle-who-vanished_27.html

Great review--thanks. I have my book on the way per Nancy's recommendation. Is there any way on your site to bring up your Top 10 or Top 20, etc. Beatle related books? Or to rank all of them by your rating? Thanks, Erik

There's no built in way, but I would be more than happy to dedicate a post to doing just that...thanks for the idea! I'll try to get to it some time this week.

Cool....thanks! That would be very helpful! Best, Erik

Regarding how outtakes got leaked. Back in the early 1980s one of the employees at EMI John Barrett was diagnosed with cancer. He asked for something to do to keep him occupied. EMI gave him the job of cataloguing the Beatles recordings. He was given audio cassettes copied from the original master tapes to catalogue. Sadly John Barrett passed away but he still had the tapes in his possession. Now what happened next is a little unclear. Either EMI forgot to ask for the return of the cassettes or his family made a copy before returning them. Either way the tapes were sold to the bootleggers. Now either the family hung on to them before selling them, or the bootleggers waited before releasing them, but the bootlegs finally went on sale in the late 1980s. Just before they came out Mark Lewishon released his book about the Beatles recording sessions., and for a while the finger of suspicion was unfairly pointed at him. The bootleg CDs were such a success it printed Apple into releasing the anthology CD series. Other outtakes and demos have come from acetate records that have been sold at auction over the years. All the above does not explain where all the outtakes have cone from but it does explain the majority of outtakes. We also know in latter years John Lennon was collecting Beatles bootlegs, one suggestion is he leaked some of his own tapes though it can't be proved.

Very interesting write-up--thanks Darrel for all the info!

The legend of how our sadly now-defunct radio station WBCN got the first Get Back album and played it over the air in late 1969 (which became the Kum Back album) is that John Lennon dropped in on the station and gave them a copy!

I can imagine John doing that! And thanks, darrel, not sure if I've heard that story before!
