Just ordered the Sony DSC-HX50V today, and it will be here Saturday! I've been eyeing this thing up since Paul announced the US leg of the tour.. Had some Best Buy gift cards laying around, and only ended up paying $88 out of pocket! Can't wait to see how this thing works and take it for a test drive before the Pittsburgh show!!
I got that one too. A few of my pics are coming out blurry. Need to check into this!
That's alarming! Esp on a camera that certainly isn't cheap..
I just need to fiddle with the settings more. There are many of them. I've been trying out a few different settings. I think it will do better with the sports setting. Hopefully this camera will provide that. It is also great as a macro camera. And a very cool function is the panoramic shot. It takes like 5 pics as you move the camera left to right & it automatically stitches them together. Very cool.
Sounds pretty nice!! Can't wait to get my hands on it and figure it out! I don't know about you, but I'm not too advanced in photography at all.. I never took the time to understand the aperture settings, etc. I just want a basic setting done for me so I won't have to waste much time fiddling with my camera at the concert!
So you're going to Pittsburgh? Mine is the 3rd one, in Chicago. The 30x zoom is excellent on this camera! Very cool. Does anyone else here have this camera? What settings are recommended for Paul concerts?

Yep.. doing Pittsburgh. The 30x zoom sounds awesome! I'm in row 9, so hopefully I won't have to zoom in too much! My last camera had 15x zoom, and I thought that was great! It took some decent concert pics but they weren't very vibrant in color. Hoping this one delivers in that regard and handles well with low-lighting!

I have the DSC-HX30V, which is the previous model of the camera. I did a lot of research into the best settings, and this was something I found on a website (that doesn't seem to exist anymore) outlining some recommended concert settings for that camera: "I would recommend shooting in "P" mode, AF Illuminator "OFF" Digital Zoom "OFF", Wind Noise "OFF", Red Eye Reduction "OFF", Blink Alert "OFF", Write Date "OFF", Panel Brightness "1(Dark)", GPS "OFF", Transfer Jet "OFF", Picture Effect "OFF", Still Image Size "18M", ISO "Auto", White Balance "Auto", Focus "Center CF", Metering Mode "Spot", Smile Shutter "OFF"... There are more settings, but I think the rest are defaults. With Metering Mode on "Spot", meter off the artist's face - that way, photos won't show his or her face blown out with brightness (took me a while to figure this out). So you put the subject's face at the center of your screen and push the shutter button down part way, then recompose your shot without lifting your finger up, and then push down the rest of the way on the shutter. Then the lighting should be adjusted to the subject's face. Though when you are at a concert where lighting changes rapidly, still probably only 25% of your shots will be exposed acceptably and in focus. You need to learn to lock in focus and be steady and try to time your shot for when the artist is not moving (or at least moving rapidly) and the lighting is best. It is a bit of a learning curve." Spot metering was the most useful thing I learned from that, and it served me well at the concert. It's honestly not particularly difficult, but it's a bit nerve-wracking learning it from the third row of a Paul McCartney concert!

Wow, great descriptions here! Thank you so much for taking the time to thoroughly go over some techniques with that camera! I'll be picking my camera up at Best Buy on Saturday, so that gives me a little over a week to review the features on this camera! Thank you again for such a thorough run-through!

Got my camera today! It takes great daytime shots.. Very clear and vibrant.. Wish I had a concert to practice on before the Pittsburgh show! Might try with some fireworks with the 4th coming up.. Don't know if that will be similar at all.. But we'll see!

Did you try the panoramic shot yet? It is cool. Great idea about 4th of July.

I'm having the same problem. I was going to practice at the Dallas concert before KC, but that plan didn't work out.

I have a more basic question...cameras are allowed at concerts? I haven't been to too many concerts recently (just Paul 3 years ago), and when I used to go back in the day you had to sneak them in. But it seems like that's changed. I'm going to see Paul on Wednesday at the United Center in Chicago. So you think I should be able to get my P&S in?

That amazes me. I used to have to try to sneak a camera in, 25 years ago or so. I'm still going to bury my camera in my purse.

Go look in the rock show thread under albany & pittsburgh...lotsa pics there for you to see.

I am pretty happy with my new camera. BUT it seems that it took a long time to recover...to be ready for the next picture. And I had read about what kind of card to buy & I did buy...it was an Extreme Plus SDXC by SanDisk. It's made for extreme speed & video. Apparently not in low light. But that is my only complaint. Here is an example of it's capabilities. I posted more in the picture thread.
