NEW - 1 Year Old / Grammy hopes
-
Last week, I had to take a couple of long drives and it gave me a chance to listen to NEW from beginning to end (the version with Turned Out and Get Me Out of Here). I hadn't listened to NEW in its entirety in quite some time but I found it very enjoyable. I found that my feelings about NEW didn't change much. I'm not going to say that it is his best or even top 3. It is so hard to rank Macca's album in my opinion. I notice that even all the hard core fans (including this Site) have vastly different opinions when ranking Paul albums. I think however that most fans will agree that NEW is a good record. My feeling is that NEW is right up there with Paul's very good Solo works like Flaming PIe, Tug of War, Chaos, and Memory Almost Full since the early 80's. I also think that Paul has been on a good to great album roll since Flowers in the Dirt. I'm only hoping that Paul takes some time off from World Tours over the next couple of years and concentrates on new studio CD's. I still think he has the ability and time to deliver 2-3 more great albums to add to his unbelievaboe Catalog. Grammy Hopes - If you would have asked me back in February or March if NEW had a Grammy chance I would have said no way. As most here said and agree, Paul and team really botched the marketing of NEW. Worse yet, NEW didn't even make the cut-off for last year's Grammy consideration by 2 weeks I believe. I think it showed that Paul isn't that all concerned about the Grammys. I'm not knocking him for that belief but for us fans, we would love for it to happened especially the highest award - Album of the Year. This being said, my opinion about NEW winning upcoming Grammys has changed dramatically. Instead of no chance, I now thinks he has at least a puncher's chance of winning a Grammy or two with NEW and an excellent chance of getting at least nominated. My original feeling was that by missing the cut-off last year, the voters for the most part would have long forgotten about NEW this year. Similar to whappened to Taylor Swift with her "Red" album. She also missed the cut-off and when the next year came, her album didn't win anything from what I remember. The main reason why I think NEW has a chance is that there doesn't seem to be any album that has gotten a huge "buzz" that would make it a clear front runner. I figured that U-2 would come out with their new album in September (just before the deadline) and that everyone would be raving about it. To me it appears as though the opposite is occuring. The reviews have been mediocre at best. One veteran rocker that may be in the running is Tom Petty. His new album did get very good reviews and maybe he might have an edge due to the fact that he has been ignored over the years. The fact that Paul has been touring heavily in the US over the last couple of months and playing NEW songs might be just enough to get him in the running. I would just love for Paul to win an Album of the Year in his lifetime. He had been nominated for this highest prize a couple of times (Tug of War and Chaos I believe) but I don't think he has ever won one. Did the Beatles win this highest prize? Not even sure Paul won with the Beatles. Please correct me if I'm am wrong about either... Paul as a solo artist or withthe Beatles. What do you folks think about NEW's chances. Is there a clear cut album that will knock Paul out for Album of the Year. Let's hope he at least gets nominated.

Yes, the Beatles won album of the year for Sgt. Pepper!! http://www.grammy.com/artist/the-beatles I just hope NEW gets nominated for something!

Thanks Nancy. Hard to be believe the FABS only had one Album of the Year. Should have one at least 3 or 4. I'm pretty sure our Macca will get a few nominations. Hopefully one will be for Album of the Year.

I think, between the tour publicity and the new version of "New," there is at least some chance that he'll get nominated. The Archive reissues should also boost his profile. I think I've said before that once the Grammy people get into the habit of nominating a particular artist, they keep doing it, and that pattern was certainly established last year! Just a note: U2 did manage to squeeze out some physical copies of their new album by the Grammy deadline this year, thus they will be eligible.

Um, Rolling Stone said U2's Songs Of Innocence is one of their best ever, and gave it five stars, a Classic. Tom Petty's new one is excellent, as was Bruce Springsteen's High Hopes earlier this year. Paul's NEW album is definitely great, but he has some stiff, and worthy, competition for Best Rock Album this year.

Randy Thanks for pointing out the RS U2 review. I didn't see that review. I do remember seeing 3 maybe 4 reviews that didn't rave about it and certainly didn't think it was one of their best. I live between Tampa and Orlando and these were local reviews. A 5 star RS review certainly trumps some local reviews. Unless I've missed it (which is easily possible) I still haven't seen much buzz about the album especially for an artist as big as U-2. I think I remember USA Today giving it 3 stars. Forgot about Springstein's High Hopes. Your surely right...competition among classic rockers alone could real high.

If you want a good laugh, look up the albums that beat the Beatles releases in the late '60s. As for "New," it may get nominated, and might even win a minor award or two, but it won't win album of the year. Winners of that award are almost always big commercial successes.

____________________________________________ Bruce, That would be funny. I actually liked Revolved, Abbey Road and the White Album a little more than Sergeant Pepper. In most top 100 Albums of All Time Reviews, the Beatles have had 5 or 6 in the Top 10 or 12. You're probably right about NEW and this year's Grammy's. The overall sales and the fact that it didn't make last year's cut-off really hurts his chances for this year. So much time has gone by. Can't recall an album from a major artist that was more poorly marketed for sales. The US is by far his biggest market and they didn't even tie in NEW when he was touring America. If I'm not mistaken, he spent about 2-3 weeks on a quick US publicity tour prior to NEW's release and that was it. That combination is not going to help sales.
-
Exactly...you have to remember the Grammys weren't the same back in the 60's. "Rock music" hadn't yet infiltrated. It was still Andy Williams, Frank Sinatra, etc. They tried to ignore the Beatles and their likes as long as possible. Totally different these days! (Thanks to the Beatles knocking down those doors, as they did so many others.)

Yes, but Bonnie Raitt came out of nowhere to beat out big albums by Don Henley, Fine Young Cannibals, Tom Petty, and Traveling Wilburys (this was when she got big, because of the award). The following year, Quincy Jones's "Back On The Block" (anyone remember that?) beat out Mariah Carey, Phil Collins, MC Hammer, and Wilson Phillips, all at the peak of their fame. For 2008, Herbie Hancock (with a Joni Mitchell tribute!) beat out Kanye West, Amy Winehouse, Foo Fighters, and Vince Gill. Even the 2011 winner, Arcade Fire, while it hit #1, couldn't compare in sales to its competitors Eminem, Lady Gaga, Lady Antebellum, and Katy Perry. And Paul was nominated for both "Flaming Pie" and "Chaos and Creation" for this award. So there is hope!

I don't recall Herbie Hancock having anyone diss him as he accepted his award. Must've been before Kanye developed his self-annointed powers of Godness. I remember as a kid the Grammys seemed to represent something. Now, I am very ambivalent.

Haha! Depending on when you were a kid, I think you're kind of right. Looking through past winners, it seems that the '70s were the high water mark of relevance, with Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon winning a lot. Most of the years, it's just jaw-dropping how lame the nominees are, especially looking back!

I don't agree with Rolling Stone though. I'd give U2's album 3 1/2 Stars. As in, it's good but it's not as good as their last album, and there's nothing as memorable as Moment of Surrender or the title song. And it's nowhere near as good as The Joshua Tree or Achtung Baby. Whereas I think Paul's NEW is up there with Flaming Pie and Tug of War.

To celebrate the 1 year anniversary of "NEW" and the re-release coming out later this month, I put together a video from the promotional Drive-In event from October 6, 2013. Hope you enjoy!

Help! & Revolver were beat out by Sinatra albums. Frank is great, but these are clearly 2 different genres. Magical Mystery Tour beat out by Glenn Campbell!! C'mon! Abbey Road beat by Blood, Sweat & Tears. Ahhhh. Band on the Run beat by Stevie Wonder (legit) Tug of War beat by Toto!!! Blasphemy Flaming Pie beat by Dylan (legit) Beatles/Macca had some bad luck going against very good artists, but some of the choices are just incredulous.

Sad to say slim or none. Last year he probably would have gotten nomination, this year will be shocked if he gets any recognition for "New". Hope I am wrong - lol.

Hey, yankeefan7, Chaos was beaten by U2's "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb." And I think "New" WILL get some kind of recognition, only because he got so many awards last year, and when Grammy likes an artist, they tend to keep going back to give more awards!
