The National - Don't Swallow the Cap "I'm not alone, I'll never be. And to the bone I'm evergreen. And if you want (dead seriously) To see me cry (don't swallow the cap) Play "Let It Be" (pat yourself on the back) Or "Nevermind" (dead seriously)"
Great tune. But I believe they were referencing The Replacement's Let It Be album - another classic.
Why do you think they were referencing Replacements? The lead singer is also in El Vy who wrote Paul Is Alive, so I'm gonna go with the Beatles here..
-
Ok, maybe you are right: He didn't answer which "Let It Be" record he had in mind, the Beatles' or the Replacements', except to say that the latter meant more to him. He did note, though, that all three of those records (counting Nirvana's) "has a sadness to them," brought on by the deaths in each band.
-
But I found a Q & A The National did on reddit, where the guitar player says it's a Beatles reference and the lead singer says it's a Replacements reference, so I guess it means different things for different people?
-
The Monkees - "Randy Scouse Git" "The four kings of EMI are sitting stately on the floor". I believe the song is about a party the Beatles threw for the Monkees.
-
The Police - Born In The 50s "They screamed when the Beatles sang"
-
A couple more: Mott The Hoople's "All The Young Dudes" mentions the Beatles and the Stones Joe Jackson's "Beat Crazy" mentions Beatlefreaks
-
^ Great Stuff, Everyone! Have never heard a lot of them!

Here's an obscure reference to McCartney, from Leon Russell in 1972 -- a little-known track from one of his more successful albums:
-
You dance With your lizard leather boots on And pull the strings That change the faces of men You diamond browed hag You're a glitter-gaunt gangster John Lennon knows your name And I've seen his Ballrooms of Mars - T.Rex
-
Roger Waters of Pink Floyd has often times said how big of a Beatles fan he is. I have always interpreted this line from Dark Side Of The Moon as being a reference to Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. "And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes I'll see you on the dark side of the moon."
-
Joni Mitchell's "Dreamer" is supposedly about John Lennon, in an indirect way, composed in tribute to him soon after his passing away. She doesn't mention him by name. A Scandinavian pop band had a charming song entitled "Paul McCartney" but I can't recall the band's name. The insipid tune from way, way back "We Love You Ringo" ("oh yes we do, when you're not near to us we're blue, oh Ringo we love you Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah" A Mamas and the Papas song referenced the Beatles, didn't it? Can't recall it right now The hip cool (well they were a few years back anyways, prob still are) band The Yeah Yeah Yeahs snagged their title from the famous early Fabs hit "She Loves You (Yeah, Yeah, Yeah)

American Pie is full of musical references, and the Beatles are certainly included. The verse about the halftime air was sweet perfume while the sergeants played a marching tune. Also, Rick Nelson's "Garden Party" references that Yoko brought a Walrus.
-
Shania Twain's song called 'When' has the line ' John's back with the Beatles and there going out on tour' Empty Garden (Hey Hey Johnny) by Elton John is a tribute to John, was lucky enough to hear it live in Las Vegas back in April.
-
I just had to mention the song "Liverpool 8!" I think that this is a great Ringo Starr song!
-
I just had to mention "When We Was Fab" by the Late Great George Harrison

Heard this on the radio this morning..."Yoko brought her Walrus, there was Magic in the air"

Danish Macca:
Scissor Sisters - Paul McCartney "Here I was awaiting Praying for the muse I'm finally awake and you have Left me less confused Maybe now You will hear me now I'm just in love In love with your sound Is it the party that ain't over 'til it's through? Is it the wiring that's suddenly blown a fuse? Is it a chemical that makes this moment true? Is it the music that connects me to you? Your song it gets me by When you're singing I'll be with you 'til the exit time"
I was just now gonna mention this one, but Danish Macca beat me to it. I had a few cds by Scissors Sisters.

ELO's Shangri-La: "faded like the Beatles on Hey Jude" Alvin Stardust's I Feel Like Buddy Holly: "Now I know how Paul McCartney felt when he got up to say: I wish it was yesterday" The Clash's London Calling: "phoney Beatlemania has bitten the dust" The House of Love had a song called The Beatles and the Stones. And probably just about every Oasis song ever written!
-
I know the song "The Seeker" by The Who mentions The Beatles.

The Monkees - "Randy Scouse Git" "The four kings of EMI are sitting stately on the floor". I believe the song is about a party the Beatles threw for the Monkees.
"...There are birds out on the sidewalk and a valet at the door." The Monkees visited The Beatles at Abbey Road when they were recording Sgt. Pepper. Mike Nesmith is in the promo film of them recording A Day In The Life, with Paul in a chef's apron conducting an orchestra!
