I heard Silly Love Songs on the radio driving home from work. I haven't heard that one live for 41 years!!
And you never will again! ...at least not by its creator! :
I don't understand why he doesn't do it? It's his biggest post-Beatle hit in America right?
Maybe the numbers suggest that? I don't know. But without a doubt his most-played and most recognizable post-Beatle song over here is "Band on The Run". I haven't heard "Silly Love Songs" on the radio in a LONG time.

Don't get me wrong, When I'm Sixty-Four is classic!...but in an arena rock concert? A tin-pan alley tune that is outfitted by a clarinet ensemble? I just don't see it. AS for C Moon & Let Em In...I was picking a replacement that was a Wings song and an uptempo piano number. Can you think of any others? "You Gave Me The Answer" is kind of in the same category as 64...
_______________________________________________________ Wix, In my opinion, Paul is already playing plenty of rock songs so adding When I'm 64 won't disturb the overall concert experience. Also, Paul and Band are obviously accomplished musicians. They don't have to use a clarinet ensemble. They can make it fun. My whole point is that Paul is 75 and has a noticeably weaker voice. As I said, When I'm 64 is like Love Me Do. Everyone knows it, everyone will sing it and it is a fun song that the crowd will love. Paul needs to save his voice considering he is doing so many shows. I would like to see him continue to tour for 4-5 more years. And this is a heavy, heavy boomer audience so we don't have a Metallica crowd here. Just my opinion. Anyway, we will see. I think it is crazy for Paul not to do "When I'm 64" at this time in his career for the "multiple reasons" I've given. That is what I would be telling him if I was a close confidant. Maybe no one will be giving him this opinion and it won't be played. But I won't be surprised if we hear it in Miami. Hopefully we will also hear Penny Lane which for the life of me, I don't understand why he is not bringing it back. I get your point about 1985. But why does it have to be a song that Paul plays on the piano. How about bringing back Magneto and Titanium. I don't care what Paul instrument Paul would be playing. Just bring it back to spruce up the setlist. And I do think that Getting Closer would be a great Wings song to add. Again, I don't care what instrument Paul is playing.

All valid points, just not my cup of tea for this concert as a packaged statement with 64... As for using the piano, it is obvious that Paul likes to keep his show balanced in its segments which he himself has broken up through the shifts in instrumentation. If he takes a song out of the first piano set, he's probably going to put a new one back in its place...not add another song to the encore or add another acoustic ditty. That's all I meant. Frankly, he could do a bang-up job of magneto from the piano too!

I LOVE Magneto and Titanium Man! Would freak if he did it! (Another one I saw live in 1976!)

__________________________________________________ Very fair comments Wix. No doubt that you and I are huge Paul fans and just want to see him have the best show possible. Funny thing is that I recently got back from a Beatles' Festival in the Louisville KY area...Abbey Road on the River. You might have seen the post in the Yesterday section. Anyway there was a lot of Sgt. Pepper songs played throughout the festival. The basic audience albeit much, much smaller were boomers similar to Paul's tour crowd. A couple of bands did play When I'm 64 and the reaction I have to say was very good. Didn't notice the different instruments the bands were playing but the song sounded very good. Yes, it was a change of pace type song but as I said the crowd loved it and of course were singing along. I don't have any idea if Paul is going to bring it out in Miami but it wouldn't be shocking to me. I won't be surprised if he goes either way as far as playing it. He is stubborn about playing certain songs and maybe "64" is one of them. I too would love it if Paul brought back "Magneto".

Very accurate assessments...I can't say I'd be crazy about "When I'm Sixty Four" he's got enough of the novelty types in the show now as it is. "And I Love Her" and "1985" are definitely overplayed now. I was beyond ecstatic when they were put back in for us in the states on the 2010 "Up and Coming" tour, but I have heard both of them every single year since (with the exception of AILH missing in 2011 for me). As always, I know most folks don't go multiple times a year, or even every year, so I shouldn't be complaining. But, take the market of Philadelphia: they have heard both of those songs in 2010, 2015, and 2016 on three separate tours and they aren't mainstay type songs. He's got plenty of songs in both of those styles that could replace them too. "And I Love Her" could easily be replaced with "P.S. I Love You", "Michelle", or an acoustic "Here, There, and Everywhere" (instead of the piano ballad version, even though I LOVED it!!!)...as for 1985, he could do "C Moon" or "Let Em In" again...or if he were feeling adventurous, how about an 2017 piano pop/rock version of "She's My Baby"? I always felt that tune would've been bigger with a better arrangement and production.
I mentioned "And I Love Her" as a replacement song for his tribute to Nancy instead of "My Valentine" which is just not that good unfortunately. It was the first song that came into my head that he could also dedicate to her because they lyrics are pretty generic. I would be more than happy for suggestions for a replacement song for him to sing to Nancy.

The one Wings song I wish he would have played was "Beware My Love", too late now due to the vocal. See link

Yep...it's all about the functionality of the performance. A Beatles festival is a welcome venue for anything weird and wonderful from throughout their catalog. I feel like an arena rock concert suggests a certain genre from within Paul's own insanely vast catalog. As for "And I Love Her"...why would he suddenly take a song that's been in the set for seven years, that he didn't write for his wife, and suggest it is suddenly in the show for her? My suggestion would be forward thinking with hopes of a new piano ballad that suits his voice and appeases the musical interests of his fans...unlike KOTB.

Getting Closer would be a dream come true for me. He could still sing it. It's an entire step down from the key that Hi, Hi, Hi is in, same key as Ob-La-Di, etc. I never understood why he threw Back to the Egg under the bus. Maybe it was the Japan trip. I think Macca could do either Getting Closer, Spin It On or To You. I'd love Old Siam Sir, but I think that ship has sailed vocally. To You or Getting Closer would be excellent in the second song slot held by Save Us/Jet/Junior's Farm this tour. Spin it On over FourFiveSeconds? It probably won't happen, but perhaps more likely than any solo stuff, but that doesn't say much

I think the fact is, no matter what Paul says about 'refreshing' the set list, it'll remain basically the same. I've actually never seen him live in person before, but I've watched many, many live performances on DVD/Video/YouTube over the years and would love to see some fresh stuff should I get to see him before either of us dies! Based on the most recent set list from Japan, I've made one of my own that I would love to see, and one that I think is fairly realistic. I understand that certain songs are must-haves from the point of view of the general public so I've kept those in, and I haven't included many deep cuts to avoid the 'lulls' that Paul seems allergic to! I welcome any comments, additions or criticisms : ) Sgt Peppers My Brave Face The Night Before Jet Coming Up Listen to What the Man Said Two of Us Scared (Replacing My Valentine) Silly Love Songs My Love (replacing Maybe I'm Amazed) Paperback Writer One after 909 The Word She Loves You What You're Doing Blackbird Here Today Ever Present Past * song from new album* Penny Lane Lady Madonna * song from new album* Here There and Everywhere I saw Her Standing There Getting Better Here Comes the Sun (replacing Something) Why Don't we Do it in the Road Band on the Run Hello Goodbye Let it Be Live and Let Die Hey Jude Yesterday Hey Bulldog Get Back Spin it On Golden Slumbers Carry That Weight The End If I thought about it again tomorrow, I'd very likely pick different songs - he has so many to choose from - but this set list would make me pretty happy. Thanks for reading

But somewhere after that, he got very mechanical with continuing to do the same songs. I understand why he has to do a dozen or so signature Beatle songs and a few Wings/Solo songs like Band on the Run, Live and Let Die and Maybe I'm Amazed but he doesn't "change" out many of the other songs that are not essential especially when you consider all the songs he has never done. You raise a very good point. He has totally ignored good rockers from Back to the Egg but continued until around 2011 to do Let Me Roll It, Jet, My Love, Let them In etc. at practically every show. Getting Closer, Spin It On, and Arrow Through Me are terrific songs that need to be heard. I will never understand why Paul wouldn't want as many of his hidden gems to be heard as possible. In many ways, only Paul himself could make many of his invisible, unheard songs far more known through his "live" shows.

I think he ignored "Back To The Egg' because it was basically trashed critically and it was the album before the Japan bust. I got a McCartney book for Christmas and it was about him in the 1970's. He was not happy with the 1979 tour and questioned whether the new Wings lineup was working. I will never get why he has hidden many of his great songs but I believe part of the reason is he does for the most part songs that did well for him commercially. Think about it, he stopped being a huge commercial artist in the early 1980's and how much does he do live after 1981. You and I know "My Brave Face" for example is a wonderful song but it did not chart hat well as a single.

Billboard does indeed rank "Silly Love Songs" as Paul's biggest post-Beatles hit: http://www.billboard.com/articles/list/506262/paul-mccartneys-top-10-billboard-hits But the song has never gotten the respect shown to "Band on the Run." I always thought that was terribly unfair, as it's a great tune and a terrific piece of musical craftsmanship.

You are right, critics called it lightweight and dismissed it. I thought it was a perfect single with great bass line and wonderful harmonies.

Just bring it back to spruce up the setlist. And I do think that Getting Closer would be a great Wings song to add. Again, I don't care what instrument Paul is playing.
It probably won't happen, but perhaps more likely than any solo stuff, but that doesn't say much
__________________________________________________ Flowers on the Run, In 1989 and even 2002 I thought Paul was the greatest performer on the planet.
______________________________________________________ Couldn't agree more Yankeefan. I also think the "money people" have convinced him that the McCartney brand has to align itself to the Beatles' legacy and the big early mid 70's Wings' hits. The way he has ignored his Solo career is really a shame in my opinion. One topic on the Website I have liked is the "sticking out of my pocket" segment. The latest song that has been spotlighted is "That Day is Done". I just responded on the Website about the song and how his Solo Career is so, so underrated. I mentioned that I hope that he adds My Brave Face and Put it There to the US tour and that both songs should be much better known to the world. I still don't expect that we will see it in Miami but I figure it was worth putting it out beyond Maccaboard. Sadly, I don't think he could sing "That Day is Done" (or Lovers That Never Were) at this stage of his career.

_________________________________________________________ I also agree with Bruce, Yankeefan and Nancy about Silly Love Songs. Objectively, I do think that Silly Love Songs was hurt in its time because it ran a little too long for a single. It went on for 6 minutes and the "I Love You/harmony section in the 2nd half did get a little monotonous especially considering how often the song was played on the radio. As a fan however I appreciated as Bruce says, "the musical craftsmanship". I think it was Nancy who mentioned that Silly Love Songs (and I agree) could be a very good "new" tribute song for Linda. It's not that MIA obviously isn't a signature song but Paul realistically can't sing anymore. I hope people who are very close to him (e. g. his kids) make this fact known to him. Think also how hard MIA is on Paul's vocal cords singing it every night. Maybe one reason that Paul has kept Silly Love Songs out of the setlist since 1976 is that emotionally it is too hard for Paul given how much Linda was such an integral part of the harmonies. At this point and with so much time having gone by, I hope Paul will reconsider. I also think that Paul's Band could really help him pull it off. What I think Paul should do is "abbreviate" the length so to keep it more of an uptempo song. He could eliminate the slow harmony section of the original and keep it up-tempo to around the 3 minute mark. I'm normally against abbreviating parts of original hit songs in a "live" setting but I think in this case it might be easier for Paul/Band to sing Silly Love Songs without hurting the performance or the crowd's experience.

All valid points, and thank you for pulling in billboard for official proof. The problem with literally every song mentioned on this page...either Wings or from FITD...is that he doesn't have the voice anymore...well, maybe for "Put it There". But "Silly Love Songs" would be mortifying in 2017 and he would just mumble through "My Brave Face"..."That Day is Done" would be a grand catastrophe of both issues.
