MCCARTNEY III IMAGINED
-
"As I said, all 3 of them realized that some fans who are stuck in their "Beatles" past and not oppened to new artists and approaches are not going to like a project like McCartney 3 Imagined."
I would take issue with that statement as it relates to me. I have no problem with covers being done of McCartney music, I just think the timing on this was wrong IMO. You have a new album that has been released only a couple of months and then you are actively involved with doing cover version of that album. I have said it before and will repeat myself due to the above comment by doing this it seems to send message that your music needs the help of younger artists to promote it. I think that is sad commentary when you are talking about a living legend. I will also once again say that if these covers kind of happened with artists just doing it on their own, I would have been ok with that.
I have listened to a couple of the "McCartney III Imagined " cover songs and they have been fine, I just prefer the original. I am not even going to bother to try and listen to any songs that have a "McCartney II" influence because I hated that album. Very nice review BJ, interesting read even though I am not big fan of "McCartney III Imagined". And in the end (pun intended), I prefer to listen to Paul McCartney music with him singing and playing the music.

Hey Yankeefan...thanks for your quick response.
Sorry for all the typos. I was trying to retype it but I guess I wasn't fast enough. I guess you got the gist of my post.
I found the podcast I heard this weekend very interesting. I will get their names because you might be familiar with them since they are from the NY area. One is a music writer (pop/rock and also classical) for the NY Times.
I totally get what you're saying about the timing of McCartney III Imagined as opposed to Paul waiting at least for a couple of years for artists to do their own covers. The 3 guys addressed that issue but they all felt positive about Paul being proactive. Do it now and get a bunch of artists doing it collectively as a follow-up album. One of the guys mentioned that it was Paul's own manager who originated the idea and Paul and EMI went with it.
I also found it interesting their own reviews for McCartney 3 Imagined was a mixed. bag. And 2 of them had significantly different opinions than mine. They liked the feel of McCartney 2 over the current album. They liked some of the songs from the "Imagined" Album quite a bit better than I did. And some of the covers/remixes I really liked they didn't like as much. Music is so subjectve isn't it.
I was trying to post via the charts which "Imagined" songs I liked or disliked compared to Paul's original. i think I clearly pointed out that I like Paul's orginal by and large much better.
Anyeay, thanks for the respnse so quickly. My wife travelled to California to visit her son which is one of the reasons I've been on Maccaboard so much over the last week. Judging by the reponses I'm getting on McCartney 3 Imagined, there seems to be little interest on this new album anyway. I'm surprised how much publicity it has gathered but it remains to be seen if McCaertney 3 (either Paul's original album or the new interpretations) will benefit. The only thing I've seen is Phoebe Bridgers cover "Seize the Day" was put on an Easy Listening Spotify plalylist. At the end of the day, that is what Paul and EMI were hoping for. So far with little success from what I've see. The reviews surprisingly have been generally positive.
Talke later.

Yankee Fan.... McCartney 2.... very underrated.....
I must admit it didn't tickle my fancy on first listening.... decades ago.
But I really now appreciate it.
Coming Up is still one of my fave McCartney tracks.
Waterfalls, Summer's Day Song and One of These Days much better than most of what is on McCartney 3
I like Dark Room... and,,,, yes, even Bogey Music.... better than those "Deep" songs of the third album... by a mile.... or a kilometre, as we'd say...
And.... I do... (wait for it).... I never liked it at first.... but I love..... Temporary Secretary.
-
And whilst I m there.... Nobody Knows far superior to Lavatory Lil....
McCartney 2 far superior to McCartney 3..... through my eyes....
... we all have our views.

Thanks Toris. It took me a while too, but I liked a good number of the songs on McCartney 2.
Besides Coming Up, Waterfalls, Summer's Day Song, One of These Days...I also really like On the Way and Nobody Knows. The rest of McCartney 2 on the proper album not so much.
We will have to agree to disagree on McCartney 3. I love the whole album especially how well it flows from track to track.
Have you heard all of McCartney 3 Imagined. I love, love St. Vincent's Remix os Women and Wives. Annie Clark is so talented. I loved what she added to Paul's original including her soulful background singing and her fantastic bass and bluesy guitar solo in the middle.
I also love Blood Orange's remix of Deep Down after I got used to the background singing. It really grew with me especially the way they sampled Paul's 1985 (the song) piano parts. I really liked the covers that enhanced Paul's originals with added instruments. As I said, I also really liked Phoebe Bridgers cover of "Seize the Day" and Anderson Paak's "When Winter Comes". Those tracks alone make this project/album very worth while as a follow-up album in my opinion. These were young artists I didn' really know and some of them did a great job.
PS...While I liked Paul's original of Deep Deep Feeling a lot better than the 3D/RDN remix of the song, I think you'll like their reinterpretation because they "sample" Temporary Secretary throughout the track. Never crazy about Temporary Secretary, Bogey Music, Darkroom and Secret Friend from McCartney 2.

The Beatles Podcast I mentioned a few posts back is called "Things We Said Today" and it is hosted by Ken Michaels, Allan Kozinn and Darren Devivo. They've been long time Beatle hosts, authors etc.
Their latest episode was on the new McCartney 3 Imagined album. In general all 3 liked the new album and they especially liked that Paul picked younger artists to do their interpretations of Paul's December album.
Some fans might find this specific podcast hightly interesting. Their next podcast is going to focus on John Lennon's new Box Set with the Plastic Ono Band.
As I have said, I like some of these new covers, remixes on McCartney 3 Imagined but what I really want and hope is that Paul and his "full Band" do a special "live" Post Pandemic Show when they can. I don't care where they do it (US or Great Britain) but just do it. That would be the ultimate follow up to McCartney 3 for me.
As a big time Solo fan, I don't want Paul and his Band to just do 2-3 songs from McCartney 3 but "most if not all of the album". Still bummed out when Paul only did 3 Songs from Egypt Statiion on his last tour. And they weren't nearly the best songs from Egypt Station.
As much as I liked some of the "reinterpretations" on McCartney 3 Imagined, I would love to see how the full Band would do many of the McCartney 3 songs. For example, I would love to see them do a song like "Deep Down". That's a song where Paul could bring his added "horn plallyers" and make it a full "soul" song. I would also like to hear/see them do songs like Find My Way, The Kiss of Venus, Seize the Day, Slidin, When Winter Comes, Lavatory Lil, Pretty Boys, Women and Wives etc.

When I think of McCartney II, "Temporary Secretary" comes to mind. I hated that....still do. When I bought the album and that came on.....I immediately shut the whole thing down. Removed the record. Stored it. I coulld not believe that the man who wrote "Eleanor Rigby" would/could later write such drivel. On rhe rock station I listened to, one day they played "Bogey Music," another disaster. The DJ, a woman, said upon its completion...."Umm, well, at least he's still cute." I thought, perfect summation. The cover photo of him was the best thing about the whole album. I should, however, have listened to all of it because it took me ages to realize that the album contained "Waterfalls" and "One of These Days," two songs I love.

Hey Beatle4Ever...Have you heard all of the remixes or covers of Mccartney 3 Imagined. As I said, I love some of them like Women and Wives by St. Vincent and Deep Down by Blood Orange.
Your're so right...even on weaker Paul albums, there are always hidden "gems.

ONE BIG QUESTION...
Has anyone heard over the last month...One or more songs from McCartney 3 or McCartney 3 Imagine on:
*A local FM or AM radio station
*A special radio station like Sirius Radio
*A local store like a Supermarket, Convenience Store, local Retaurant or any retail establishment
Just curious if all the publicity or reviews posted on the Internet is paying dividends relative to Paul's new McCafrtney 3 albums. Thanks
-

Anybody else curious why the thought it was good idea for "McCartney III" and not another album like "Egypt Station".

I don't listen to the radio much so maybe I am not a good judge but I have not heard one thing from "McCartney III" and I did hear a couple of songs from "Egypt Station". As for my local stores, most of them play 70s -80s pop/rock and some Motown. I have rarely heard anything fairly current at stores.

I hated "McCartney II" from the beginning and even tried to give it another try 20 years later and still hated it. "Temporary Secretary" and even "Coming Up" grate on my last nerve. To each their own -lol.

I think it was just the lockdown that made it turn out to be "McCartney III" with Paul once again playing all the instruments.

For a long time McCartney II was one of only two Paul albums that I didn't like (the other being Pipes Peace), but over time it's grown on me. It's still one of my least favorites but it's now in my "like" tier.
With McCartney III Imagined, I think I would have liked it better if it covered songs from all three McCartney albums. That way it wouldn't have felt odd covering an album that just came out, and it could have promoted the three albums together as a series, which I think is a great concept.

Sorry if i've missed this in previous posts . Is the new Mccartney III Imagined cover versions with no involvement from Paul or are they his originial recordings remixed with added vocals by the other artists etc?

Absolutely love your idea of the artists covering all three of the albums, agree 100% that it would be a great concept. I nominate you to be on McCartney's management team !! If they had done 4 songs from each album, I would have handled a "McCartney 1-3 Imagined" album so much better !! For the fun of it, please pick songs from each of the albums you would have liked to have other artists cover.

I remember Paul saying that he had no extra songs at the time he had finished McCartney III. That is unusual for Paul since he always had many "extra" songs during most of his other album sessions including Egypt Station and New in recent years.
I have less of a problem with his McCartney III Imagined Project especially since almost all of the music performers were "cutting edge"artists compared to his contemporaries. Recently, I have had to go to the Tampa airport several times and I've been listening to one of the "Alternative/Top 40 stations in Tampa. I'v noticed that several of these younger artists like Dominic Fike, St. Vincent, Phoebe Bridgers, Anderson Paak currently have songs getting airplay and they are advertised. So far, I haven't heard any McCartney III imagined songs however. I think that is what Paul and his manager were going for with the project. I think that younger people unless they have parents, grandparents etc, that were into Paul and the Beatles aren't drawn to the Beatles and/or Paul for the most part. As I have said, I do like a few of these remixes/covers .
I especially like St. Vincent's "Wonen and Wives" and Blood Orange's "Deep Down". In those cases I actually liked them slightly better than Paul's originals. They added things/instruments to Paul's simpler originals. Conversely, I didn't like as much the songs that had too much of a McCartney 2 flavor. I have grown to like Beck's version of "Find My Way"but I don't like it nearly as much as Paul's original which like you, I love. I was curious to find that Beck is only 50 years old. I thought he was older. It seems like he's been around forever.

Ha, thanks Yankeefan2! Just picking songs I like, I would love to see an album of artists covering songs from all three McCartney albums, something like this:
Find My Way
Oo You
Coming Up
Junk
The Kiss of Venus
Waterfalls
Every Night
Summer's Day Song
Pretty Boys
One of These Days
Seize the Day
Maybe I'm Amazed
I think it would be a fun way to emphasize the McCartney albums together as a series

Great idea and list McCall. Adding to your list...On The Way and Teddy Boy would also be interesting. I can hear Annie Clark from St. Vincent playing her guitar on "On The Way".
