Is it time he quit being a novelty act and either do something proper or call it a day ?

Well, what he's done with his band...in the studio crafting his new album and in concert... is not being a novelty act; nothing like it. It's all quite proper, so I guess he needn't call it a day.... if that's okay with you and meets your approval, of course!!!! :
-
His output is certainly nothing short of being a full-fledge musician. Is he in a comfort zone with a sort of a same formula; most certainly. But he has put out an album every 2-3 years since 2003. If that is being a novelty act then he certainly is!!!

Ringo was funny on Conan last night. Very animated, just like on Ellen. Didn't sing on this show either, though. Best line: When asked if he and Paul send each other postcards, he said Paul was better at that and that he usually just sends Paul a fax!
-
It's Easter and many holidays in a row, I doubt if I get this postcard from Ringo until next week...

Watching Ringo on Conan last night all I could think was, "I hope I'm that spry when I'm 74." But since I'm not that spry at 58, I have my doubts. And as for the person who complained about Ringo being a novelty act: He's always been something of a novelty act, going back at least to Yellow Submarine and Octopus's garden. That's why we love him.

The term "Novelty" relates to something being new, original, or unusual... That being the case, let's just say that Ringo is the best dang novelty this planet has ever had. While everyone else is off singing nothing but boring love songs, there's Ringo, singing about a submarine and an octopus! And it works! He is simply the most entertaining drummer to ever play rock and roll

It was great to see and hear Ringo chat on Ellen and Conan, but just doing that is not going to help him sell albums. He needed to have his band there and perform a song or two. People know Ringo still exists. His appearances merely confirmed that. It's all well and good to hear Ellen say how well received his album was and how good it is and that...."Everyone is going home with a copy!!" Loud Cheers! People who tuned in to those programs needed to hear and see him perform!!! :

I know, right?! I love this album, and I had high hopes of, and was looking forward to, Ringo and the All Starrs performing Rory and The Hurricanes, Island In The Sun, and Photograph, and A Little Help From My Friends, songs like that.... Nothing happened. This is probably the first time in 32 years that he's not performed a song or two on TV to promote an album. Man was that disappointing

Perhaps he is giving the All-Starr band a break.....doesn't look like he'll be utilizing the Roundheads anymore for live performances. He likes this All-Starr band line up too much.

The Roundheads have actually been out of action since 2007, so they're long gone. Ringo did bring around another group he called the Roundheads, but there was only two original Roundheads members in that band, and the rest was filled by Richard Page and Gregg Bissonette. As for the All Starrs, Todd is actually off promoting a new CD of his own, so he probably wouldn't have been able to make it. And Ringo has decided that, for the first time in 6 years, he'd like a summer break, where he's not working. So hopefully he does extra promotional work during the All Starr tours for this album.

Picked this album up yesterday and have given it two full listens... My thoughts? The worst Ringo release of the 21st Century. It sits right at the bottom with Ringo The 4th, Bad Boy, and Old Wave. I fear Vertical Man and Ringo Rama may be the last peak of Ringo's recording career because it's just been creeping down hill ever since. I don't understand how he can release an album titled Postcards From Paradise, include it as a title track that is made up of 95% Beatles song title lyrics, and open the album with a song titled and about a band used to be in....but then include a song titled "Not Looking Back". Oddly enough, the only songs I liked were the last three...with "Touch 'n Go" being the only song on the album I will listen to regularly and would like to hear live this fall.

I know it's opinion... but I'd hardly call this the worst release of the 21st Century. And Ringo Rama being the peak? What about Choose Love? Y Not? And as for releasing a song with a million Beatles references... It's because he's Ringo. It's how he works. It's the magic of being the sole album producer. You can do what you wish. Dude, I think you're thinking into this album too much. I don't really see how Postcards' lyrics and contradictions between Rory and Not Looking Back can really make this the worst album release since Time Takes Time. That's a big leap there

As you said...it's opinion. My ears say that every album since Ringo Rama has gotten a little bit worse with each release. The whole album has a very sleepy sound about it. It's rock, but it's not..."You Bring The Party Down" and "Bamboula" have got to be two of the worst songs Ringo has ever recorded and released.

Well, to each their own. Maybe you're out for something than me. I'm just out for some musical fun, something with a fun drum beat, something I can sing along to, maybe with a cool guitar riff here and here. That being the case, I think this is one of the best albums Ringo has ever recorded, up there for me with Ringo, Vertical Man, and Y Not, and I think Bamboula is one of the best songs on this album.

I'm with you on this. The album has tons of energy. "Not Looking Back" is about Barbara....a very nice ballad. It's not about his career and is in no way contradictory to sentiments in other songs. Bamboula is terrific...as is "Touch 'n Go". "Bridges" is excellent too. Lots of good stuff on this album; nice guitar and drum interplay throughout.

Bridges may be the worst song on the album for me, but that in no way means it's a terrible song. It's still good. And from what I've heard, this may be Ringo's most well received album since Vertical Man.... It's certainly up there for me

Finally some sense in this thread. On his own, Ringo is a lousy composer and a very modest producer. The new album bores me to tears, even if I don't consider it to be as atrocious as Ringo 2012. Perhaps someone like Jeff Lynne could have saved this album with some ideas to make the pedestrian songs more attractive. As it is, this album doesn't stand a chance and will sink like Ringo 2012 did. Postcards doesn't even hold a candle to the likes of Ringorama or Time Takes Time.
