I recently heard this on a 24-7 Beatles internet radio station. It's sort of criminal that this song is not more well known

I like it a bunch and agree, one of the forgotten songs IMO on the White album.

        Maybe I'm amazed !!

1 of Paul's best bass lines ever. And, his drumming wasnt too bad either. I like how the song builds up slowly & explodes into the final verse.

Hi Melanie and welcome to the forum! Dear Prudence is a beautiful song that John composed for Prudence Farrow (Mia Farrow's sister) while they (The Beatles and several others) were in India to study with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. It's my understanding that The Beatles a bit later considered him a fraud when they learned he'd tried to seduce Farrow, though I've heard differing accounts. The song "Sexy Sadie" was then penned by John regarding him and this disillusioning. The Beatles supposedly left India shortly after this event. Many of the songs that ended up on the White Album were composed while they were there. Hopefully others will fill in what I have missed or not gotten correct. This Wiki link provides a little more information, but is not definitive: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dear_Prudence

Dear Prudence was written because Prudence stayed in her room meditating, and wouldn't come out. Beautiful song! And, yes, Paul drums on this!

I did not know the back story on Dear Prudence so thank you for that, Erik and Nancy. Just did more research on it: "Although the song was written in India and Prudence overheard many jam sessions between The Beatles, Mike Love and Donovan, John never played the song to her. 'George was the one who told me about it' she recalls. 'At the end of the course, just as they were leaving, he mentioned that they had written a song about me but I didn't hear it until it came out on the album. I was flattered. It was a beautiful thing to have done.'" Source: The Beatles, A Hard Day's Write (The Stories Behind Every Song)

It's not my favorite John song, or even my favorite John song on the white album (that would be a tie between Happiness is a Warm Gun and Julia), but I like it.

I agree with you, Bruce, about Julia. I think I could have named a daughter Julia after hearing a song as pretty as that one. I had never paid attention to it until I was just recently(last week) listening to the White Album (don't laugh)...for the very first time. "Warm Gun" I just skim over, it doesn't do anything for me at all. Maybe it will grow on me.

Always loved Dear Prudence. The last minute is just sublime, with the swirling guitars playing through the shimmering effects, and John's voice with the Beatles harmonies at the climax, always give me shivers.

It's one of my favorite Beatles songs of all time, definitely in my top 5. Brilliant song and recording (even without Ringo on drums).

Back In The USSR segueing into Dear Prudence are the best one/two opening songs on ANY album. Period.

While I don't COMPLETELY disagree (I named my daughter Prudence by the way ) I would edge it out (personally) with Sgt. Pepper/With A Little Help...

It has always been one of my top favorites. It just conveys images of psychedelia to me that I love so much
