There are many wonderful Beatles' songs. For me though, it's Hey Jude, with its beautiful uplifting music, incredible singing by Paul, and the inspiring words that can take the shi**iest day and turn it around. The line "For well you know that it's a fool who plays it cool, by making his world a little colder"; may be the wisest and most wonderful line in all music. Whenever I hear that song, time stops and things just get better.
I used to just LOVE that song--when it came out I was 13 and they played it about twice every hour on the radio for months! Now, I hate to say, after hearing it thousands of times, I'm sick of it! It's still a great song, but not one I'd want playing at my funeral or anything.
That's the problem with hearing the same songs over & over. But then you develop a new appreciation for some other ones...which is always fun!

But then you can get a new take on it. Like seeing Paul play it with Ringo at The Grammy Salute, or hearing it on the new U.S. Album CD. There's always a way to keep it fresh. I'm never sick of hearing it!

THE BEATLES NEVER recorded a bad song! Its extremely difficult for me in choosing one all-time favorite BEATLES song. I chose "In My Life" because its the all-time greatest song ever recorded.
I don't know about that first statement! What about "What Goes On" or "You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)" (not to mention "Revolution #9!)
Those are still great songs! If you're drunk enough, you can even dance to them!

Don't forget Wild Honey Pie--that one's up there too ... not to mention Maggie May

Wild Honey Pie has always been a "skipper" for me whenever it comes on the playlist but Maggie Mae - dirty Maggie Mae to you - is a great little tune Of course the other Maggie May (spelled with a Y) is an epically fantastic song. Rod Stewart's best. I've often said that to me it would be sad to think that my best work was my first work but that is the case for Rod I believe. Every Picture Tells a story was fantastic and never duplicated or matched by him.

I like the folk song, I just wish they had put more than a snippet of the song on Let It Be as it just sort of ends upbruptly

I'd like to think Maggie Mae is somehow related to Her Majesty. "I wanna tell her that I love her a lot but I got to get a belly full of wine" is an all time great lyric.

That's good, because Paul will never delete it from his setlist!

You Know My Name is one of my guilty pleasures..... was meant to be kinda "corny" so I can't help hamming it up when I hear it.... Revolution 9 of course will go down as the least-favourite Beatles composition (I don't even count it as a song)... And the beauty of What Goes On is that the most tone-deaf person in the world can belt it out at the top of their lungs, and still not do it a disservice... staying in touch with the original tone. That being said, I find the song cute.... In fact, I like the song.... Someone mentioned Her Majesty... I know this will be just me... but at the final clipped note, I can't help but launch into singing the little "bridge" bit from Man We Was Lonely.. "I used to ride.....".... they just seem to slip together so well.... but, that could just be me.

Well said toris!
-
"In My Life" because there are places I remember.
-
Tough decision....I would choose "If I Fell" and I prefer the version with Paul straining his voice. Oddly enough, I've seen this listed as a song that some brides and grooms choose for their first song to dance to. I can only hope they just like the song because the lyrics don't really fit the occasion of a wedding that well. You can almost imagine a groom winking at one of the bridesmaids during the vows.
-
She Loves You It was non self oriented...it was about someone else...showing concern...about someone else

You Know My Name is one of my guilty pleasures......
Mine too. One of Paul's faves to this day!!! I remember when it (Let It Be) was in jukeboxes...I'd always opt to play You Know My Name... Even recently I played it to a plonker here...purported to be a Beatles know all...had no idea what it was or even the artist! "...dunno...sounds like the Stones. Is it?"

He didn't even recognize that distinct Lennon voice, "Welcome to Slaggers!"

Hi Nancy R, Regarding our mutual admiration for the song "If I Fell", I love the romanticism of the lyrics, I love the way it is sung, I even love how Paul strains his voice in that one part but there is something I have always noticed about this song that I'm sure was not intended at all and it has kind of bugged me all these years. If someone were to hear that song for the first time, especially in this age when the public is generally more open-minded about different types of relationships, I think there could be confusion about what this song is really about. I mean I've always known it's about a guy who is already with a girl but he seems to be interested in another girl but won't make the first move in that direction unless he gets a sign from her to proceed when the conditions are right in his opinion. But really, doesn't it almost seem like he's talking to someone (it could be a male or female but let's say it's a female) and THAT person is involved with a girl? "If I give my heart to you, I must be sure, from the very start, that you would love me more than her." It's a sloppy grammatical construction that could actually change the meaning of the song. It should really say. grammatically speaking...."that you would love me more than she loves me" but of course this does not fit into the song musically. What saves the song "If I trust in you, oh please, don't run and hide. If I love you too, don't hurt my pride like her". This sentence, although also grammatically incorrect, does seem to point to the fact that the "her" he speaks of could very well be someone who HE is involved with already, someone he's displeased with enough to plan overthrowing. The lyrics should say "don't hurt my pride like she does" but who am I to quibble? These are The Beatles after all. And still, somehow, some way...poor grammatical construction and all..."If I Fell" is my favorite Beatles song!
