Couldn't find the original thread on this (that search engine sucks!) but here is RR with lyrics. Listen with earbuds and maybe you'll hear what I hear in the first line which is what the poster of this video wrote.

This is a great song, but is there a deeper meaning behind posting it in its own topic?

LOL. Funny you should bring this up again. Weren't you one of the ones that did not want to discuss it anymore? I still hear "mining hills" no matter what what is printed. Maybe Paul was too "whatever" to see straight or he was just goofin off. Who knows? I found this page about every song on the White Album...scroll down to RR & it says: Its frontier-folk nature even compels McCartney into character. He drops the refinement and light Britishness of his usual vocal in favor of rootsy, more roughhewn inflections. The way he mumbles through ?black mining hills of Dakota?, his down-home delivery of ?that boy?, and his mispronunciation of ?Gideon? (?Gidjin?) all insert McCartney, as a sympathetic narrator, into the song?s comic theatrics. His bumbling-bard persona is of a piece with the mood and spirit of ?Rocky Raccoon?. (edit to add) ^ That quote is from : http://www.thewhitealbumproject.com/songs/side-two/ I found the thread! Now I remember how someone else made my thread into a poll. How can you hear mountain? http://maccaboard.paulmccartney.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=88380&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=hear&start=0 oh & the poll was tied 12-12

Two reasons. That was what the printed lyrics said (that came with the album) and also when I listen with earbuds it is so clear to me that I can only hear "mountain" and never "mining" even if I try. We don't have to argue this again, I just came across it and wanted to share.

No, no arguments. Some people hear one thing & some people hear something else. The printed material has nothing to do with it. Oh I forgot to include the link above...will fix it now. Read about RR here: http://www.thewhitealbumproject.com/songs/side-two/

                Yeah, I've read that before.

I still agree with Nancy (or is it Lil, or Magill?), but not because it's printed on the poster. The poster spells Geoff Emerick's name wrong! ("Jeff Emerick")

I like the Anthology opening better. Mind you, coming from a little town in Minnesota It was not the kind of thing that a young guy did When a fellow went and stole his chick away from him
