Paul McCartney has officially become an oldies act.
-
I'm heartbroken about not going. Many of my friends went. I got a phone call from one before he went on, the people around her were going crazy.
-
If by "oldies act" you mean he will only be performing for those of us with gray hair....I'm on board with that. Since the Beatles put Liverpool on the music world's map I think it's only right he did so many songs from that era.
-
Blackat:
Like it was said, there's alot of people who have never had a chance to hear those songs live before and aren't as fortunate as some of the board members to have seen a live Paul concert many times. Why are you criticising his choices and performance anyway? I don't think fans have that right. If you're a fan of something, lo and behold it means you actually LIKE that thing. Leave Paul alone, some of us would be escastic just to see him perform live!
You are very right... we have been extremely fortunate in the UK and US to have had so many chances to see him perform live. I wish everyone had the same opportunitiy to experience that magic.
-
that is true, we have been very lucky.
-
Well to you JERKS who come on here and criticize Paul for his live concert in Liverpool today, I say get lost and I just really hope you will not be going to any other of his concerts! I am very happy that Paul still wants to perform, and he can still outrock just about anybody on the planet. I will be honored if he tours and I can see him again!

11. Blackbird: He really struggles with this one. Doesn?t anyone have the guts to tell him he can?t pull this off anymore?
Just one of the things from your 'review' that I disagree with entirely. Also, do you really think that at an event of this sort, playing a slightly truncated set, he is likely to play a song like 'Letting Go'? Highly doubtful. Also, if you truly believe that Paul and band segued into 'Give Peace a Chance' off the back of 'A Day in the Life' to cover it's slightly fluffed lyrics, then you know very little about a band's rehearsal or live performance. While, like a lot of other people on this board, I'm aching to hear a lot more of his solo work on stage, there is definitely a time and place for it - and this wasn't that time or place. Anything too obscure would have alienated the audience.

This concert was Macca paying homage to Liverpool. He's not going to pay homage to Liverpool by playing obscure B-sides to please bored fanboys that have seen him live 32 times.
I really agree with this. The set made sense. Most songs were related to Liverpool somehow. Well, that was my third time at one of Paul's concerts and, man, I can NEVER get tired of his best hits (Hey Jude, Let It Be!! ). I was in front of him, close to the stage. The audience's enthusiasm was so great, people of all ages and from all parts of the world. They all danced and sang along and cheered him up. Many of them had seen him several times. It means the set works, I guess.
-
What's ironic is that you call his "lack of originality pathetic". That's odd - didn't he write most of those songs? And you're the one using the tired and recycled insults to attack a talented musician who is just trying to make people happy. Who lacks originality here?? Grow up, child. :
-
there's been a time fans were angry he didn't play (enough) beatlessongs, now that he does they want more of his wings or solowork and I guess if he does that they'll start asking for a brand new song each concert. Yes the setlist hasn't changed a lot during the past few years but did we really hear him playing The long and winding road live that much or did we just look at the dvd too many times? I admit I would really love hearing him play some songs from Flowers in the dirt during his next tour but if he doesn't the world will still turn. In Liverpool he gave the people what most of them wanted and expected. Besides if you see what songs he played and what songs BBC2 broadcasted it becomes very clear that the larger public wants to hear his greatest hits and he can't just play for his diehard fans can he?
-
We saw him live last night for the first time and thought he was awesome .. far better than I expected!! ... The moaners on here who've seen him before must've known what to expect?? especially with it being televised? .. so why make such a big show about the set-list? why buy a ticket if you don't want to hear all that?We and everybody around us enjoyed it thoroughly .. the fireworks were'nt bad either!!!

I see both sides of this argument, and I have mixed feelings... Of course, anyone paying to see Paul should rightly expect to hear the hits, including myself. I'd miss Hey Jude if he didn't play it. I have and will continue to pay to see him regardless of what he plays. However, when the years roll on and the same songs (with the exception of a few here and there) are played over and over and others are ignored, it does become a bit dull. Paul's been playing Something on the ukelalee since 2002. I love it... I'll always love it... but given the opportunity, I'd choose something new. I adore Paul... I'll go anywhere to see him, but I gotta admit, I'm not that heartbroken over missing this trip to Liverpool. Ok... stone me if you must.
I tend to agree with this. I must say I was a little bit disappointed when I saw the setlist from last nights show, especially after the buzz I'd heard in the build up about there being a lot of "surprises" in store. I'm not criticising anyone for going the show and enjoying it at all (I would have enjoyed it too if I'd have been there) but I think there should be room on this board for a little discussion without being shouted down. I'm a Paul fan and will nearly always defend him but I do think his live shows are now getting a little bit "Vegas". We all have DVDs and live albums with multiple versions of 'Band On The Run' and 'Back In The USSR' now, great songs though they are to me they are just starting to outstay their welcome. He could easily do a 2 and a half hour show of really great songs that he has never done before because his back catalogue is that vast. I know he will always do 'Hey Jude' and "Yesterday' etc etc but there are other big hits that he hasn't done for years. Would the majority of the casual concert going fans really be disappointed if he did "Listen To What The Man Said" instead of "Band On The Run" for instance? And all of the hardcore Paul fans would LOVE it! Or "Silly Love Songs" instead of "C Moon"? So much scope for some fresh material. My dream would be for Paul to do a run of shows at smaller theatres and really pull out some rarities and make it up the setlist as he goes along. That would be cool. But it seems in these big shows he like to play it a bit safe and stay with the tried and trusted stuff. I'm not criticising last nights show or those that went and had fun at all I'm sure it was a blast - but I'm not sure I'd be all that excited about another tour with a similar setlist. I expect I'll get flamed here now.....like a flaming pie!
-
I am surprised to see all of these negative comments... but being the first time I have seen him I don't have anything to compare this show with... I enjoyed it... and I will keep the memories with me. Thanks Paul.
-
I am not going to flail you alive, i tend to agree with you wholeheartedly Chappo. A lot of people seem to think his setlist should stay the same, and don't want obscure songs. Most who are complaining about his choice of songs, are not saying play unknown stuff. But play other well known and liked Beatles/Wings material. There is plenty of great songs still ready to be heard.
-
His set list was very "standard." However this is a one-off show so he will keep it very basic as it is truncated from a usual 36 song set list to around 26 songs. I wouldn't worry about the set list until he does a proper tour; then we'll talk.

yes, I've seen the video and the changing to Give Peace A Chance was absolutely planned.

Paul McCartney?Anfield Liverpool Sound Concert (Running commentary while listening on the radio) 1. Hippy Hippy Shake: What an interesting choice for a concert opener. A nod to the Live at the BBC shows! Wow, we might get a ?new? show. 2. Jet: This one is NOT a surprise. This always been the 2nd or 3rd song to open a Macca show. My wife thinks he has always sung the line ?Jet? a bit off-key. No difference here, but always good to hear. 3. Drive My Car: Gosh, I?m sick of this one, but I guess it keeps up the show?s energy better than ?Flaming Pie.? 4. Flaming Pie: Oops, spoke to soon. A little different than previous concert versions, with harmony vocal in response to the lead vocals at the end of the song (but pretty standard take, nonetheless). 5. Got to Get You Into My Life: OK, let try to get the crowd pumped. 6. Let Me Roll It/Foxy Lady: Arghhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!! You know, he says everyone wants to hear the hits. When, exactly, was this a hit? What is wrong with him? If you think the show needs this kind of groove, bring back ?Letting Go? or something else like it. 7. My Love: Shaky vocals. At this point, the number of Wings/solo songs are greater than Beatles tunes. Shocking. 8. CMoon: And now he?s telling the stupid story behind this lame song. Talk about just sucking the air out of the place. With his catalog, he pulls this out for this type of big show???? 9. The Long and Winding Road: ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ 10. Dance Tonight: Nice version of this song. Thus begins the acoustic section of the show 11. Blackbird: He really struggles with this one. Doesn?t anyone have the guts to tell him he can?t pull this off anymore? 12. Calico Skies: This is a good ?un, that he sings well. 13. Spent my early life in Liverpool (Not sure if this is the title??): New song, primarily driven by acoustic guitar and accordion. Ringo?s ode to Liverpool was much better. 14. I?ll Follow the Sun: Does the same false ending, three times (the last one sung in a kinda boozy voice. Kinda inspiring me to start drinking heavily as well) 15. Eleanor Rigby: He?s going through the motions now. 16. Something: Did you know that George was a really good Ukulele player? Does he really think anyone in the crowd hasn?t heard this story before? Unbelievable. 17. Penny Lane: Stops the song after the first line, so he can start over and ?get it right.? Wow. How original! Wait, the song is over and now he?s inviting a special guest to the stage. Could it be Elvis Costello? Ringo? No, it?s Mr. Dave Grohl. Now, that is worth the price of admission. 18. Band on the Run: This is for the Wings fans out there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 19. Back in the U.S.S.R.: So much for the Wings fans out there. 20. Live and Let Die: Please, bring Olivia and Yoko on stage to sing backup vocals. Do something different?. anything. The sheep are cheering though. 21. Let it Be: At this point, I think I?d like to go watch Hillary Clinton?s Puerto Rico victory speech. I expect more surprises there. 22. Hey Jude: Great, the bathroom break song. Seriously. OK, he?s left the stage, but I?d like to predict the encore. ?I saw here standing there? and ?Yesterday.? No reason to go out on the limb here. The BBC commentators are praising the show as spectacular. The guy is saying he has never seen anything like the pyrotechnics that accompanied ?Live and Let Die?. OK, so there was someone there tonight that has never seen a Paul McCartney show. 23. Yesterday: He still sings this one well. 24. A Day in the Life/Give Peace a Chance: Well, I guess that?s what he meant by ?a few surprises.? Oh my God..he screwed up the words in the bridge. He caught the bus in seconds flat twice (and mumbles a couple of unrecognizable words as well)!!! No wonder he never does anything new. He?s so shaken by that screw up that he?s not even going to finish the song, rather he?s now made a clumsy transition into ?Give Peace a Chance.? 25. Lady Madonna: Mentions the screw up to the song?s lyrics for a Day in the Life before launching into Lady Madonna. How embarrassing. Dave Grohl is back. How exciting. 26. I saw her standing there: Goodnight! I don?t care how many people may be coming to a show that have never seen Paul McCartney before (it can?t really be that many, can it?). His lack of originality is pathetic.
Thank you for your interesting concert review, it is an honest one I think. Yes, thes set list is not very surprising, I did hoped he gonna plays "Listen To What The Man Said' I was wrong, instead the 1000000000. version of Live and Let Die , i think is now boring to me.

Maybe there are more people than just he hardcore fans, and maybe they wanna hear the hits. Just a guess : If he plays on tours or other gigs where the amount of the fans who want to hear other songs is lager, he plays more different songs. On gigs like this every artist plays their hits and well known songs, because 90% want to hear those songs. I last went to a concert from a dutch artist, and he had always played his hits but now he wanted to do songs he really liked and those he had never preformed and although al the fans(including me) loved it most of the audince was disapointed.

True. But there are lots more hits to choose from which he hasn't done before. Personally I'm waiting for him to open his shows with "Loup (1st Indian On The Moon)" though

I couldnt have put it better myself. It was a highly unoriginal and clumsy set from a very clumsy band. And what the hell was going on with Live and Let Die - what was that extremely loud fog horn type sound all the way through the instrumental break?! Did Wix get his foot wedged underneath one of his organ pedals??! I found the performance boring - and turned went and did something else during Let it Be and Hey Jude. Day in the Life was nice enough but no need to fall flat on their faces into Give Peace A Chance. They should have just finished the song. For all those hoping to hear new songs on the new tour - get ready to be disappointed.

Paul has now done enough tours and performed the "mandatory" songs more than enough times.........this next tour he should truly shake things up, and I agree that noone will be dissappointed. This is constructive criticism not complaints, but until he does go out on tour, we can only speculate on his setlist...............
