Paul McCartney 2014 Rumors

I mean no offense, but someone asked me about this and now I am curious: how can Paul make more money by playing in smaller markets such as Fargo and Lubbock (and other similarly-sized cities in the current US tour) than he would in a series of concerts in bigger capital cities across Europe, Australia and/or the UK? Is it due to the number of shows (more than 20) and by mixing smaller areas with bigger ones (such as Chicago and Los Angeles), or does he actually make a profit at every single show, no matter where it is?
Aren't tickets more expensive in the US than in Europe (dunno about Australia)? Plus, if he's already in the US playing bigger cities it's cheaper to also play smaller cities than it is dragging the equiptment over to Europe? Plus, Nancy probably prefers touring in the US since it's her home country.
I don't believe the Nancy angle. This had been his touring pattern since 2002.

I guess that guy from The Romantics isn't touring with Ringo this time. Thanks!
Considering Ringo fired him in early 2012 it seems News do not travel fast
....fired?
Yes. He mentioned it on Facebook. Something like "Ringo fired me from the band" lol

I think it was more even before. He toured the US in 2002 and 2005, and Europe in 2003 and 2004. For what it's worth, I'm not saying we should personally blame Nancy for Paul not touring the UK/Europe as much as he used to (:lol but I don't think it's insignificant either.

I think it's his team more than anything. They watch the bottom line. I just said in the Chicago thread(agreeing with Bentleysmama) that there were not many banners around. I wonder if that too is a sign of the times. They hand you your backpack now (VIP gifts) & they used to ship them out. Can you imagine how much they save on that?

Just those attending soundcheck get the items the day of the concert. Gold and Silver still get their's shipped out a few weeks later.

When he plays these smaller places he's never been before, or not for decades anyway, I wonder if part of it is that he knows the audience's enthusiasm will be through the roof to finally see him. We know he loves the crowd's reaction, so why not go where the crowd is really hungry to see you?

I think the smaller market plans has backfired. The Pittsburgh show didn't sell out until the day of. I know the Fargo and Missoula shows have had similar problems. This is the first time since I've been seeing Paul that I haven't heard of instant sell-outs as the majority.

That, and his touring pattern of playing the USA every year will reach a critical mass. If he plans on touring until he is 80, why not take a year off in the USA? Tour Europe and Australia in 2015 then USA again in 2016.

like it or not...his promoters are all about bottom line. Ticket prices are higher in North and South America and they command those prices. Even at lower VIP prices, the UK and Europe markets don't see nearly as many as well as not selling out. He can afford to play smaller markets mixed in the US tours because it's the same country and it's easier to move this big show around logistically. He's never going to play 20+ UK shows or any one European country in one tour.... There's no customs in every city and far less hoops to jump through. America's so big, it's easy to sustain shows. As far as Australia, I always go back to the year he cancelled the shows due to the tragedy, but in reality those shows sold very poorly....I really think that he's worried to go back. Springsteen had 2 good tours there but his tickets are much, much cheaper. Rolling Stones were there and I think they did well with very expensive tickets but i'm sure there's a reason beyond cost of taking shows all the way over there

I'd much rather have mine shipped. And the soundcheckers were about 150 people so yes they saved some money.

Doesn't really matter if Paul's shows completely sell out, so long as they mostly sell out. Look at Roger Waters. According to Billboard, in 2013, his tour generated $80-million with 27 shows. He ranked 11th on the list of top-ranked concert tours in 2013. Guess how many of those 27 shows sold out? None of them. There was a difference of roughly 85,000 people between the capacity of the places Roger Waters toured and the number of tickets sold. And he STILL made a boatload -- with a completely unchanging set list I might add. Meanwhile Paul's tour last year ranked No. 16 -- making $70 million in 21 shows, 15 of them sellouts. But the difference between his tickets sold and the capacity was about 1,000 people. So clearly Paul could play less than full houses -- just like Roger Waters -- and still have the tour be profitable. That said: North Dakota -- a heavily right-wing Republican Obama-hating state is a strange place for a lefty, vegetarian Obama-loving rock star to perform. Bit of a mismatch.

also, not to get people's hopes high by UKers don't hang your heads just yet! 5th Beatle's Tshirt may have been debunked but that doesn't mean that UK shows are a no go....way too early to tell but I'm excited enough to save some of my time off for December!

Hey Bob...saw you on the big screen in Chicago but didn't get a chance to meet you...maybe next time.
-
I must been blind as a bat or just so intent on taking pictures that I never saw myself on the big screen...but numerous folks have said that they saw me!! Sorry we didn't get a chance to say hello! Chicago was great as always!! Chicago crowds never disappont!

Yes. He mentioned it on Facebook. Something like "Ringo fired me from the band" lol
Based on a couple of Facebook posts he made, he seemed to be a bit of a hot-head. Still, I hate to see things end like that amongst fellow musicians.

The All Starrs are constantly rotating since 1989, this is nothing out of the ordinary.

I find it hard to believe that Ringo left with any hard feelings. However, that 2010 band did seem to flip pretty quickly, and didn't really get much attention. Rick Derringer and Wally Palmar were big assets to the band, and it's a shame they only got one time around. However, Edgar Winter made a FB announcement when Ringo announced the 2012 band without him, and made a really big deal out of having been in three incarnations of the band. So, it seems to me if you get asked back, you're REALLY special to Ringo.

As Bob has mentioned the money is greater and logistics easier in the US _ he also spends a decent amount of time in the states. One other thing to keep in mind. Whether a show sells out that doesn't affect McCartney's take much. Might hurt a little on merchandise sales, but McCartney gets a guarantee in every city he plays. It is up to the promoter to pay that and then make enough on ticket sales to turn a profit. McCartney gets his money whether there are 20,000 people or 10,000 in the crowd. That also is why he plays alot of US shows. He can get higher guarantees and it is not a cheap show to put on. The Tour manager will have alot of input on to where he plays. There was also an article at one time in Fargo that said that Mick Jagger had a hand in McCartney going there telling him what a great time the Stones had when they played there. That said I hope he eventually gets back to Australia and New Zealand and I will be shocked if he doesn't play UK/Europe in the next 12-18 months. RamblinRed

WCBSFM NY just played "Band On The Run" and the DJ mentioned the Out There tour and said quote "let's hope that area date on 10/22 comes to fruition" Could NEWark be in the cards now?
