Pick Any 3 Songs for One on One Setlist

Today, he couldn't do the screaming version a la Abbey Road
I don't know... I reckon he'd be able to manage a pretty good version of it. The bits he struggles with these days is not actually the rocky bits because you can disguise vocal shakiness behind the guttural quality. Take Maybe I'm Amazed, the chorus isn't where he struggles, it's the verses (specifically the first verse - that's murder to start a song with). He's not done I've Got a Feeling for a while but it's in the same vein with the 'All these years...' bit. Also, and I've been thinking this for a little bit but not sure if I'm just tricking myself into believing it, but is he sounding better this year than in the last couple? Especially last year. I remember watching Maybe I'm Amazed in Desert Trip videos and thinking it was pretty rough but in the latest American videos, he's actually okay. Not 2003 levels but more like 2013. I thought that maybe the illness that caused him to postpone the second Japan tour took a while to completely recover from, probably not helped by the constant concerts.

Okay, I'll bite, why not... Wanderlust -- Because he's never done it on tour and I want to see him do it before I die. The End of the End -- Because it's another masterpiece no one but hardcore fans knows. Friends to Go -- Great song, also almost never heard, could go nearly anywhere in the setlist.

I think that to sing "Wanderlust" with is actual voice is a mission impossible

Wanderlust -- Because he's never done it on tour and I want to see him do it before I die.
He needed to do this song about 15 years ago in much better voice.
Bruce M.:
The End of the End -- Because it's another masterpiece no one but hardcore fans knows.
I agree, beautiful song but probably too depressing in a concert.

I do agree that his voice probably couldn't do justice to "Wanderlust" now -- but hey, this is fantasy, right? As for "The End of the End" being depressing ... Well, "Yesterday" ain't exactly cheerful. Neither is "For No One," which he did a while back. And another recent staple, "Here Today" is Paul talking to an actual dead guy. So I think the audience could handle "The End of the End" -- and if he did it, Paul would surely follow it with something upbeat.

Ok, we will have to agree to disagree. I think it would be more depressing for audience at concert to actually hear him singing about the day he died than the other songs you mentioned.

I liked my ideas, but some of the suggestions I've read here are absolutely terrific! It really goes to show how 3 songs can make a whole difference. I've seen "Smile Away" pop up a bit...that would be sweet! His vocal could be similar to "Hi, Hi, Hi" with the band filling out the vocals behind him. I also like the "Wanderlust" suggestion, but sadly that key would not benefit Paul with his current voice. That would've been something on the Driving USA tour. I really fell in love with this song when I heard Brian Wilson cover it...and then I watched Broad Street. Great tune...but it may be too late for that one. "Take It Away" would make for a good 2nd song after the opener. My personal preference for that slot has always been "Jet", but I can totally see it there. I remember reading about the band trying "Back Seat of My Car". Ive always wondered why it never came to fruition. My favorite RAM song by a mile. I would be floored hearing that. Again, wouldve been awesome with his '02-'05 voice. Keep em coming!

_____________________________________________________ You are so right "Let Me Roll It 89". Just 3 song changes could really make a difference (and better) for the hard core fan. While I'm the first one to want more and different Solo songs, I also feel that some minor changes in the Beatle songs (especially celebrating the Sgt. Pepper anniversary) could make the overall setlist much better. I gave a couple of those suggestions so I won't repeat them but in my opinion Mr. Kite and I Want to Be Your Man could easily go. I also found "Smile Away" an interesting suggestion. In the early 70's I wasn't a big fan of Ram. I liked some of the songs of course but other tracks were just so-so to me. It wasn't until the Ram Remaster of the Archive Series was released that I really appreciated Ram. One of those initially s0-so songs that I started to love with the Ram Remaster was "Smile Away". Not sure he could do it now but I love his all out rocking vocals on the album. Other songs from Ram that I now love (and didn't fully appreciate) are "Eat at Home" and "Monkberry Moon Delight". Heard them live recently by a tribute band at the" Abbey Road on the River" Festival and man did they sound good. The only song on Ram that I still don't care for is "Long Hair Lady". It just goes on way too long and is too repetitive but I'm sure others here might love it. That's what great about being a Macca fan. I agree with others that "Take It Away" certainly should have made the setlist at some point and Wanderlust would have been perfect on either the 2002 or 2005 tours. Don't think that Paul vocally could do "Wanderlust" justice at this stage however.

Like "Smile Away" but if I had to pick a song from RAM that I really liked and would love to hear live it would be "Dear Boy". If I could add two more I would love to hear live it would be "Promise To You Girl" and "Dance Til We're High".

______________________________________________________ Great choices and "Promise to You Girl" would be so easy for Paul and the Band to do. I remember a couple of You Tube cover versions of "Dear Boy" that were scaled down to mainly the piano that were very good. Sometimes a different arrangement like he does currently on "You won't see Me" can be very effective. Thought the same possibiltiy exists on "O Darling". Again, not enough imagination and creativity to this setlist.

You have seen this clip but if others have not, it is reason why this song would have been great live.

First 3 which sprung to mind: Getting Closer, "early set Wings spot", he could scream his way through it, band would nail it. Take It Away, somewhere mid-set to pick up the pace again after the ballads, full band singing along during the chorus, verses camouflaged by harmonies high in the mix, band would nail it, although the plastic horns by Wix will be as painful as ever, Rusty can cover it up by doubling with guitar like he sometimes does ('Letting Go' for example). The Back Seat Of My Car, possibly during the piano set, but I don't know how he's going to perform it without completely re-arranging the song. Maybe it's time to go into Brian Wilson territory and leave the high notes to Abe Jr., but I know McCartney will never accept this. I'm afraid this ship has sailed, and one of the best songs in his catalogue remains unplayed. Also: transpose, transpose. For years I fully understood the pride and honour thing, and I admired him for it. But now it's just devaluing the performance and irresponsible. When even Liam Gallagher, the greatest rock voice of all time, re-adds classics to his set and transposes them all, you know surely the greatest pop and rock voice of all time who is 30 years older, can do it. When he did it ('Ob-La-Di', 'I Will', 'Here, There & Everywhere', 'I've Just Seen A Face', 'Lovely Rita', 'Fixing A Hole', 'Ram On') no one blinked an eye or just didn't notice it.

_______________________________________________________ Yankeefan, Thanks for the video of "Dear Boy". I hadn't seen it in quite a while so it was fun to hear it again. Yes, another terrific Solo song that would have been great for Paul/Band to have done on the 2002 or 2005 tours. Don't think he could handle it today unless it was a more sparse arrangement with Paul's lead vocal done in a lower key. Even that could be terrific but unfortunately it's not something that Paul would even think about trying. It got me thinking this morning that maybe it's a shame that Paul never had a separate (obviously very good) "musical director" who could added variety and creativity to his setlist. I know that Wix is kind of that person but maybe the tours needed someone outside the band. I just get the feeling that Paul and the Band just get together very informally and just throw out a few new song choices (with Paul focusing on Beatle songs and his latest material (the "New" album, 4-5 Seconds etc.) and that is it. A musical director who was also a big Macca Solo fan who could go far more deeper into possible Solo song choices (he has so many songs and I'm not talking obscure ones) and even different arrangements (if necessary) to meet his aging voice. Again, I'm not suggesting he abandon the 12-15 Signature Beatle and big Wings' hits especially for the 1st timers. The next video that popped up by the same group was "Too Many People" and that was great also. Paul at least did that song on one tour I believe. He married it with "Bathroom Window" from Abbey Road if my memory serves me correct. Too bad Paul didn't stay in that direction by adding a 3 or 4 tasty and different Solo songs on each tour beginning with 2002.

______________________________________________ Great Post "Nobodytoldme" It is a shame that Paul and current Band never did "Getting Closer". I just did a post about Back to the Egg in the "Not Such a Bad Boy" section under the tread "1979". I always thought that "Egg" was terribly underrated in my opinion and I thought Getting Closer was one of the great rockers on it. There's a few on "Egg" that would have been great to hear as "live" versions. Take it Away is a song where Yankeefan (and others) have been beating that drum for years. Still baffles us...it was a "hit" record. Don't know about "Back Seat of My Car". As you say, his 2017 voice couldn't handle it unless it was a completely different arrangement. This post just shows how many Solo Songs that Paul/Band could possibly still do so something like "Back Seat" might have to be passed over to more realistic songs.

I thought Paul had completely forgotten about the album til "Baby's Request" popped up on "Kisses On The Bottom". It was so good to hear. I love "After the Ball" and "Old Siam Sir". When I go to Abbey Road On The River, or anywhere with Wings reunion shows, it sounds so cool to hear "Rockestra" live! I think that would make for a killer instrumental by the band...maybe during Paul's encore before "Golden Slumbers". Did they do "Getting Closer" on the '79 UK tour?

Wings did do "Getting Closer":

Monkberry Moon Delight (instead of "Let Me Roll It") Maxwell's Silver Hammer (instead of "My Valentine") Oh Darling (instead of "Maybe I'm Amazed")

Trying to be realistic and pleasurable here...the top three songs I gotta here (that he has actually played before) 1. Penny Lane (replace any of the songs near the end of the set like USSR, Ob La Di, Mr. Kite) 2. For No One (replace Fool on The Hill) 3. Bluebird (replace In Spite of all The Danger)...Wings fans need a new deep cut.
