I don't think how good a song is has any bearing on chart positions these days I would have expected it to crack the top 100 at least, given his name.
What an adorably naive comment. Paul has only cracked the U.S. Hot 100 once in the last ten years, with "Dance Tonight" -- which charted for one week based on a burst of digital downloads after it was in an Apple commercial. To radio programmers and the majority of today's pop music audience, Paul's name = "old," and it's a young person's medium.
True. He confuses me. His concerts are clearly a celebration of a glorious past. But he records like he wants to appeal to twenty-something hipsters. Which he is not ever going to accomplish.
What do you think he should record in order to appeal to his 'target audience'?
How the hell should I know? I'm not Paul McCartney!! Nor am I his manager or producer. One thing he could do is just be Paul McCartney and record his songs that he writes, without any agenda or thought as to a target audience. If it is good, people will find it. The man is a legend and doesn't really need to pander to any group. Including computer game enthusiasts.
He doesn't pander towards any groups. He just releases the music he wants to, whether it be experimental, rock, pop, covers, classical etc. For that, I say good on him!

As far as I can tell, he IS just being Paul McCartney. He likes trying different styles, always has. Part of the "problem" with his chart performance over here is his age, for sure, but it's also his refusal to stay in one marketable category. Promoting an album as diversified as "New" was always going to be a big challenge in the U.S. In Japan and some other places, it's apparently not as difficult. I keep saying (and people are probably tired of it by now) that if he wants success in the U.S., he should stick with the "rootsy" approach of "Early Days" and "Turned Out" and "Get Me Out Of Here." Not that he would get a hit single out of it, but I believe the album would do better. For the most part, the American public likes their old artists' new music to sound weathered and ragged, not cutting-edge and shiny. And it's even more important that an album fit neatly into one category. Do I think Paul will do that, though? No, because it's more important to him to keep exploring. Note that his attempt at a "punk" album with "Back To The Egg" actually resulted in an album as diversified as any in his whole career. Coming just a couple of months after the disco-ish hit "Goodnight Tonight," that album was a marketing nightmare, too.

That's the new Paul's direction: having no direction. And it's okay, is not a critic. Is the best thing he can do.

Yeah. If that's the case, people shouldn't complain when he doesn't make the charts. When he does chart, it is when he is being Paul McCartney, ie Band On The Run, Jet, Silly Love Songs, My Brave Face, With A Little Luck. But the song NEW was very much his style, and didn't do well. So who knows? Maybe a computer game song will do the trick.

This new thing, whatever it's called...Destiny's Child? Hasn't even cracked the UK top 100, I read somewhere.

It's so crazy, it just might work!

McCartney can branch out, do what he wants, he has earned that right. But as a fan, frankly, unless I hear he is working on a new CD and tour, it is hard to get excited about these other projects. As a person in their early 50s, music for a computer game holds no interest for me, nor does music for a children's cartoon film. I guess I miss the days when an artist put out an album, then toured to promote the album. And that was it. Now, it is so complicated following what some of these folks are up to! Yes! I am a geezer!!
-
I'm a geezer too. Yep he can what he wants, but back in the day his focus was straight albums and singles. Not sure all the video games, ballet scores, soundtracks, classical stuff, animated films, poetry books, paintings, etc etc etc are doing him any favours with regards to his FOCUS.

Folks really have to stop expecting Paul to make the singles charts. Ain't gonna happen except by some rare bolt of luck. With the right marketing, his albums get get 2 or 3 weeks in the top 10. That's not bad for a 72 year old in what is and always will be a youth medium, and we might as well accept it rather than longing for the impossible.

No one from his generation is making hit records anymore. Not The Stones, Bowie, Elton John, Billy Joel, none of them. I think it has been about 20 years or something since Billy Joel even tried. He's probably the most realistic.
-
Paul always surprises. I love the NEW albums so much, and the four producers really pushed Paul in many directions... I really hope he continues with this multi producer idea! The Hope song was amazing and epic. It would be great for a movie soundtrack, don't you think? I think a hit movie soundtrack would be cool Whatever Paul decides on, well I really look forward to hearing it!!
-
Couldn't care less if he charts. Just noted somewhere it hasn't charted. And that in spite of his interview blitz. If he'd focus soley on straight up rock/pop and not all the other stuff perhaps he'd be delivering even better music than he still does in his 70's? But yes, he's earned the right to do what he wants. Thing is, he's got fingers in so many pies these days, apart from us, nobody else is really listening. I wonder if he retreated to his bunker for 2 years..aside from concerts . .no opening nights, no radio or TV, grant not even one interview...then deliver a killer album. He loves to please and laps up adoration but sometimes... Less IS more.
-
I haven't given up hope on Paul charting again in his lifetime.... problem is this song ain't going to do it. It's perfunctory, not exactly inspiring, and no matter of publicising it is going to make a difference. Doesn't mean I love Paul any less, but this song is average at best. So, certainly not worthy of any single release and any promotion of it is a waste of time..... Actually, even if released on a "proper" Paul album it would sit in the back seat.... of my car...behind a cushion... Time to shift focus to what he does best.... pop and rock, or an acoustic reinvention.... or reinterpretation...Too many fingers in too many pies, at the moment.... Just can't help but think he is poorly advised. Or has become laconic in his choices. Cares too much about being "the king of versatility".... All I want is a "real" album!

One thing I find really baffling is that he's putting far more effort into promoting the Destiny track than he did promoting NEW.

Makes me wonder if he feels a sense of relief that he can finally move on from that album and stop trying to convince people to buy it after all this time! "New" is now officially old.

And...he was on the Jon Stewart show (on comedy central website probably today)...and now tonight Dec 17 he will be on with Jimmy Fallon. "Lady Gaga, Tony Bennett and Paul McCartney have been added to the December 17 "Tonight Show."

Very interesting! The guests were supposed to be James Franco and Seth Rogen, but they've cancelled all appearances this week over threats to their "Interview" movie. Did Jimmy call up Paul last minute??

Geez...everwhere, all the time... Even Ringo must be rolling his eyes.
