New - Track-by-track thoughts

toris:
Now that the honeymoon period is over, I look at NEW in portions or chunks rather than song order: Excluding the bonus tracks (which should?ve been on the album ? and in no particular order on each separate line): 1. Appreciate/Queenie Eye/I Can Bet/Save Us 2. New/Everybody Out there/Early Days/On My Way to Work/Alligator 3. Road/Looking at Her 4. 5. Hosanna 6. 7. 8. Scared
Road is starting to grow on me, but similar thoughts on Scared. Don't hate it, but i would now swap it down to the bottom of the list.

I am not quite ready to go in depth for each track. However, I must say that since the album came out, there is one track that has distanced itself from the pack. Early Days. There is a melancholy, a wistfulness, a vulnerability here that upon first listen left me with silent tears, a mixture of appreciation and nostalgia of a time I didn't even know personally. Tears continue to come with each listen, the personal verses about two upstarts with the world in front of them intertwined with memories behind him, and his wish that the listener may be blessed with the ability to recall them, while being able to move forward with passion. The realization that this almost incomprehensible life story is in its last chapters makes listening to this song and others like them all the more emotional. His ability to stir emotions in me I didn't even know I had is why he is and will always be part of my life.

just listened and knocked out my thoughts to contribute here! Save Us ? Awesome riff, great rocker, great song, great album opener. Great great great. Alligator - Flow Macca, work it, and jam out that loud ass guitar. Great music and cool lyrics, all I can say. One of my favs. On My Way to Work - decent , not a humungous fan. Queenie Eye ? this song rocks and has that McCartney jam bounce. I dig, nice rock singing on it. Dogs and bitched hunt for fame. Early Days ? very pretty and meaningful. I tend to skip it though honestly. New ? song of the year IMO, love it. Appreciate ? Yeah man, love the beat and the downlow melody, very sinister and dare I say.. shnazzy. Appreciate. Great lyrics for such a jammy jam. Everybody Out There ? fun party song, well done, some good guitar bits Hosanna ? this is a deep spiritual song IMO, I kind of like it. It requires smoking herb to really get it IMO. I had to. I Can Bet ? love this song, very what I?m hoping for with Paul. Great instrumentation and tight rhythm, jammy. Cool lyrics Looking At Her ? take a look at the beauty, love this song. Another great low down vocal, and then that badass techno blast. Great stuff. Road ? I like how the song builds, but not a fav. Not sure why. Love the album.
IMO

Beautifully stated, darkeyes. I'm looking forward to your thoughts on some of the other songs.

The "Early Days" line about sweet memories of sweet friends from the past coming up to comfort you makes me well up--he had so many who've passed on--devastating for a while but with time's passage you're able to smile through tears and cherish, truly treasure their precious memories--McCartney gives us such hope and consolation with those deceptively simple words. His very strong compassionate streak that emerges in various songs makes me love and respect him. He helped me.
-
yes he really helps us with this album, and it's the magic of art, to touch people and to have the gift to express what so many people feel. That's why we NEED him !!!

Oh Lawdy I sure adore that song "New"--he's so happy, perky and upbeat, life affirming--he should feel like that all the time, just about, seems like--so it's intriguing, mystifying, fascinating to compare and contrast the songs "New" and "Road"--seemingly polar opposites in mood and musicality, while "Early Days" and "On My Way To Work" seem like companion pieces. Gawd I luvvvvvvvv how he sings both "Days" and "Work," especially, and as a song love "Days" somewhat more than "Work," but still love "Work" a lot. Knocks me out the way he sings these. "Save Us" is a real treasure--reminds of early Macca in the Fabs, and that ain't so shabby Could be (and is) also a post-Fabs solo good 'un, too "Queenie Eye" is delightfully "English" and child-like exuberance reigns even with its covert theme of the romantic relationships game. I've written elsewhere in here on the others, I'll go on an easter egg hunt and place all in one basket that is--if anybody's "out there"

Track 10 - I Can Bet Produced by Giles Martin. This is McCartney at his poppy best. It's like the best Wings single that never was. It has a fantastic swagger to it that is epitomized by the line "What I'm gonna do next, I'll leave entirely to your imagination". There's a guitar riff in there somewhere that reminds me of something on "Memory Almost Full" and a short synth solo that is pure Wings. But then there are some aspects of the production that place it firmly in the present. The trippy ending is cool.
Strange! the chorus is copied directly from"Get Back"! melody & guitar riff I can Bet - Get Back same riff I can Bet - Get Back same riff I can bet you?ll never guess - Get Back the way you once belonged otherwise the song is very strong and I like his voice here, the most amazing part is: Cause what I?m gonna do next I leave entirely to your imagination the way the words sit on the melody is another way of showing how genius this man is not only in melody but in lyrics.

I'm really loving this album, but not ready to give each song a rating, so I'll just rank them in order of my current level of enjoyment. Don't really think there's a bad song in the bunch though. Queenie Eye Appreciate On My Way to Work Alligator Looking At Her Early Days I Can Bet Everybody Out There New Save Us Hosanna Scared Road
So, after listening more Road has grown on me. My new order is Queenie Eye Appreciate On My Way to Work Alligator Early Days Looking At Her I Can Bet New Road Save Us Everybody Out There Hosanna Scared
-
Scared is the only one I routinely skip.
-
I have only listened to some of the songs, most of them in little bits. I am now discovering that I am missing a lot by not going at the listening party full force. This album is blowing my mind. Love it Paul.

Prudence, I didn't like it much at first but it does definitely grow on you. Just give it a little time and a few listens and I think you will find the same. The melody is very subtle for Paul but I now quite like it. The stark and naked production is so different than anything else on NEW, that I now find it refreshing when it comes on. Hosanna was another "grower" with me.

I actually like Scared less the more that I listen to it. Not sure why it grates on my nerves. Love the rest of the album though and Scared is just a hidden track anyway, so I'm going to be allowed to not even count it

well i wouldn't say 'copied directly' but more of a reflection i also felt/heard the same similarity with 'get back' that you speak of when i first listened to 'i can bet', but the reality is this: (bass notes) _____ D_ A B C_B__ A I can bet you?ll never guess ___ A__ E_F#_G___ A__E F#G Get Back Get Back ___ D___________________A G F# Get Back to where you once belonged so yes, there is similarity because both chorus melodies are based on a 7 th note back ('i can bet' being a change from D to C, while 'get back' A to G) but that sort of progression is like standard " rock 'n' roll " and classic soul/r&b anyway which has contributed to a lot of Macca's upbeat basslines, so no 'direct copy' but rather influence

I don't know about that. I gave nails being run down a blackboard a few listens when I was a young fella, but it still didn't grow on me. Hosanna sort of grows, only in the sense I don't dislike it with as much intensity, but Scared remains so benign it's almost devoid of any life. A real shame there were no sweet ballads on this album. Totally missing in action. Needed one for real balance.

I didn't state or compare the chords of chorus, cause chords wouldn't reflect any similarity other than the background and feel. "Woman" of Lennon has the same chord progress of "Here There & Everywhere" on first verse, but melody cleverly made the difference. The melody is the important thing! Forget the chords, I clearly compared the melody and the 3 parts structure plus the exact guitar riff of the chorus between "I can bet" & "Get Back", this is something you cannot ignore.

Songwriters can nick ideas from themselves, and often do. Listen to Prince's 1999 then the melody he uses on MANIC MONDAY, the song he wrote for the Bangles. The verses are almost exact.

and why did you think I'm criticizing Paul for that?? please read carefully why I stated that before being defensive. someone stated this song is similar to ...., while I find the chorus copied from an old classic by Paul himself without any negative intention. However, (since you brought that) I think comparing Prince as songwriter with Paul in nicking ideas from themselves is a bit unacceptable. Paul McCartney is the best songwriter in history!
