The Art of McCartney- Tribute album
-
By DAVID BAUDER Published: Today This two-disc Paul McCartney tribute is a decade-in-the-making labor of love by one man, producer Ralph Sall. So it would be churlish to throw cold water on it, right? Sorry. Sall's interest in chasing down marquee names, rather than marquee performances, makes this a gigantic missed opportunity. http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_MUSIC_REVIEW_MCCARTNEY_TRIBUTE?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2014-11-14-09-25-23

Thanks! He goes on to say... "Bringing in some current and more diverse artists - maybe a Katy Perry or Pharrell - and letting them interpret the music freed from a band with its own preconceptions would have been infinitely more interesting. So would digging further into McCartney's vast catalog, including some work he's done this century. While musical adventurousness is risky, the rewards are greater. McCartney's legacy deserved a more challenging environment." I like that last sentence... "McCartney's legacy deserved a more challenging environment."

I can dig this perspective. But that's not what happened, innit? Hey, it would be great if McCartney would dig deeper into his solo catalogue for his concerts. After all, McCartney's legacy deserves a more challenging environment. I disagree with that review. I have heard what Katy Perry does to a McCartney song. It sucked.

ok...so maybe he had the artists he named wrong but I do think they should have used their own bands...maybe it would have spiced it up a bit.

That I can agree with! It is pretty evident it is Paul's band in the back of each song.

Macca's band is used as the backing band for 1/2 of the tracks. RamblinRed

Oh, that's cool. I hope the CD liner notes tell which do and which don't.

What you think if we made a list of the album with the note we give to each song?

With the grade of each song? Ramblin did that on a previous page. Maybe one page back he graded each song.

I was going to post it but saw your link I think it is a fair review, but Billy Joel was not that bad, he was better than most of the others here. Moderator edit: Post edited to conform with Copyright Forum Rules

im not big on tribute albums you'll always get ended up with singers/musicians/bands you dont really care about or dont like so im going to pass on this one

I like tribute CDs. And I like this one, the Art of McCartney. I have a CD called the Lost Songs of Lennon and McCartney and in many ways, I think the interpretations out do the originals.

My favorite cut is The Airborne Toxic Event - No More Lonely Nights. Beautiful.
Wish I could hear this in it's entirety...
You can listen to the whole album here: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/stream-the-art-of-mccartney-featuring-bob-dylan-brian-wilson-kiss-20141112 No More Loney Nights is about at 1:48. IMO, No More Lonely Nights is BY FAR the best cover on the entire album. It's so different. All the others I would rather just hear the McCartney version. I'm going to take a big leap here, too. This cover version is better than Paul's. It's fantastic.
Who ever added the time signatures so that you can jump around song to song, thank you

I can't help think that a true tribute by any artist would be with their own choice of musical backing..... I think it's cheating a bit when so many songs are done by Paul's band. I think when it is all said and done that this holds this album back. Hey, maybe that suited some of the artists. Get into the studio. Roll one out. But I'd like to think the average musician would be honoured to be involved in this project and would want to individualise it as much as possible.

Billy Joel was wonderful when he did his cover of Back in the USSR on his live tours many years back. An undeniable fan of Paul and the Beatles, but I remain underwhelmed with his take on Maybe I'm Amazed. He could've done so much more with it. Or if he knew his voice was wanting, pick another piano song. There are a few to choose from.

I have a different take on this CD than some of you. I find it refreshing to hear Dylan sing a McCartney song. Why on earth do I want some young, clear voiced person to sing it? That's how Paul sang it! Also, while McCartney has a first rate voice, the truth is I have heard his versions of these songs millions of times. I am not going to listen to them again. THIS, however, I will listen to because they are new twists on an old theme. Do I REALLY need to hear McCartney's version of Yesterday from 1965 again? The answer is no. I've HEARD it! Willie Nelson, however, does a nice version from his perspective. It gives me a new perspective of the song. As for the track choices, I suspect they actually want to SELL some of these CDs. Artists covering Calico Sky and Jenny Wren would be as much of a snoozer as, well, the McCartney versions. I mean sales-wise. I will be buying an extra copy of this tribute CD collection for my brother on his birthday!
Actually, Dylan does a nice job on "Things We Said Today". ...however croaky his voice now is. I sort of get why he chose that one...it's one I could imagine him writing himself. I think he picked up on it back in '64 and liked it. (It's sometimes my favorite Beatles' song. That "honor" changes quite often.) If you like Willie Nelson singing "Yesterday", you must also love the great Ray Charles' version...all that soul. I love that Chrisse Hynde is doing a song. I love her voice on anything!!

You said it! I love the SOUL these artists bring to the songs. Paul has soul too! When I was a kid and first heard She's A Woman, I thought it was a Black guy singing!!

Billy is more of a storyteller, a crooner, not a rocker. He picked a song & voice style that simply isnt him. Plus, he does it badly. Not sure how he could listen to the final version & be happy with what he did - he is usually hard on himself. There are so many Paul "story" songs that suited Billy's style better.

Just read an article about the Tribute Album....and which artists are on it...and their song selections. So looking forward to hearing Smokey Robinson sing "So Bad"....one of my all-time favorite McCartney ballads...his gorgeous solo ballad that compares to his Beatles' ballad...."Here, There and Everywhere"....for me. And Dion is singing "Drive My Car:. And Daltry is singing "Helter Skelter"....wants to make a Who version of the song that's louder than the one done by the Beatles....who were trying to make a song louder than any Who song..... "Who" gets the last word/laugh??
