Just listened to this entire album and it really emphasizes the fact that Paul McCartney has the greatest singing voice in the world. No one is better.

Here's my track by track thoughts - note I tend to give more props to those who re-interpret a song without destroying its melodic base. Maybe I'm Amazed - Billy Joel - I'm a big Joel fan but he doesn't have the chops for this so he uses his 'growler' voice, which works ok given the urgency of the song. Good arrangement. B- Things We Said Today - Bob Dylan - the arrangement is good, but I can't stand Bob's voice (one of the 2 worst vocals on the album) so a big knock for that. C+ Band on the Run - Heart - Solid, rocking sort of paint by numbers rendition. B Junior's Farm - Steve Miller - This almost sounds like the brother of The Joker. There is some great guitar work in this arrangement. B The Long and Winding Road - Cat Stevens - uses a little different vocal style. Not bad B- My Love - Harry Connick Jr - Just can't get into this. Last song recorded for the album. C- Wanderlust - Brian Wilson - Wilson was the first artist to agree to participate. He does a beautiful job taking this little known classic and exploring its melody and harmonies. A Bluebird - Corinne Bailey Rae - This is simply exquisite. Great job of backing her by Macca's band. A+ Yesterday - Willie Nelson - Very nice version. Sparse with just guitar and then a little accordian/harmonica. A Junk - Jeff Lynne - not a Beatlesesque as you would expect. Sold. B When I'm 64 - Barry Gibb - Doesn't really work for me - C+ Every Night - Jamie Cullum. Really a pretty nice cover. A few nice changes. B Venus and Mars/Rock Show - Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley - This is much better than I expected. Love that they did the whole song including the outro. You can tell they are having a blast. Aniother one where Macca's band really shines. A Let Me Roll It - Paul Rodgers - This is an excellent rendition. Like the exapanded version of Macca's typical live solo. Paul's voice fits this one well. A- Helter Skelter - Roger Daltrey - Roger just tears into this backed by Macca's band. Guitar arrangement differs a little from how Macca performs live. Just excellent. A Helen Wheels - Def Leppard - These guys have fun with this song and turn in a rollicking version. A- Hello Goodbye - The Cure F/James McCartney - This didn't work for me the first time i heard it and still doesn't. C Part 2 coming shortly RamblinRed
_____________________________________________________________________ RamblinRed, Thanks for the review (parts 1 and 2). I have to admit, I wasn't too keen on this tribute project at first glance. To me, it had too many songs that we have all heard a thousand times done by too many aging rockers. But your passion (and others) is causing me to revisit the collection. I am really hoping that this is a success and there is a Volume 2. i would love this to happen especially if there were far more songs from Flowers in the Dirt, Flaming Pie, Driving Rain, Chaos, Memory Almost Full etc. on the subseqent collection. Paul has so many great unknown songs that potentially could be resurrected if an artist (especially a current popular one) could do it great justice. Just think if Paul Smith (I hope i have his name correct) the British White Soul artist did Souvenir (the great Flaming Pie song). Please correct me if I have his name correct. He was on the CBS Sunday Morning show recently in America. I remember years ago when Hall and Oates had one of their unknown songs done by Paul Young (the British Singer). All that my friends were saying was "I didn't know that Hall and Oates wrote that song. If someone knows the song I'm thinking of, please let us know. I believe that Paul has so many of these hidden gems that needs just one "up and coming" or big current artist to let the world know about it. There are many examples like Souvenir or Young Boy. I am now going to buy the current collection because of the reviews I have heard here. I am looking forward to hearing Great Macca solo songs like Bluebird, Wanderlust, On the Way etc. Who knows, maybe I'll like Willie Nelson do Yesterday or Billy Joel doing "Maybe I'm Amazed. I actually was at Best Buy today hoping to buy it but I see here that it is not released until 11/17. Because of all the enthusiasm on this thread, I will buy it next week. Can't wait to respond here after hearing it.

Just remembered the Paul Young song (written by Hall and Oates). May not have the correct title but the lyrics went something like this: "Every time you go away, you take a piece of me with you". Probably I have a word or two wrong here but I'm confident someone will know the title from this. It was a big American hit and I think it was Paul Young's first big hit in the US.

My favorite cut is The Airborne Toxic Event - No More Lonely Nights. Beautiful.
Wish I could hear this in it's entirety...
You can listen to the whole album here: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/stream-the-art-of-mccartney-featuring-bob-dylan-brian-wilson-kiss-20141112 No More Loney Nights is about at 1:48. IMO, No More Lonely Nights is BY FAR the best cover on the entire album. It's so different. All the others I would rather just hear the McCartney version. I'm going to take a big leap here, too. This cover version is better than Paul's. It's fantastic.

Edit: Bluebird is also a different, and great, take. There are some good covers on this album, don't get me wrong, but there are also a lot of mediocre ones.

Have been listening to the album streaming this morning...
Yes...since yesterday! Doesn't Heart sound good on Letting Go?
They sound so great!! Love Heart, they really rock... Am enjoying this so far...as soon as I heard Smokey Robinson... ah just love his voice on So Bad, a good match up! I still have to listen to the whole thing. I love so many of the artists chosen...

I am enjoying all the renditions of Paul's songs! KISS doing Venus and Mars/Rock Show is brilliant! And Cheap Trick on Jet is magnificent!! But all of them are really good, can't wait for my CDs to get here.

except "Let It chop!" and "Things we said today" worse singing of all time! I would have listen to Def Leppard doing "Let Me Roll It" instead of Paul Rogers. I liked the selection of songs, There should have been a song from the 90's like "Calico Sky" or "Used to be bad" and from 2000 like "This Never happened Before" or " My Valentine" but who knows ?maybe another DVD will come out in future

"Everytime You Go Away".
At the time, the critics were comparing that song and Paul Young to McCartney. Alas, it was probably Paul Young's last major dent on the music charts.... I may be proven to be wrong. He also had "Wherever I Lay my Hat".... Not sure which came first. But, both were reasonable songs. He just never really took off like he was expected to. Had good hair, from memory. Then again, my memory is almost full.

_________________________________________________________________________________ Toris In the US Paul Young also had a couple of hits covering a couple of classic Motown songs. One I remember was "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted". His blue eyed soul voice was good for these types of songs. I don't believe that Mr. Young was a musician/songwriter which can severely limit some artists as far as a long term career. Don't know what he is doing these days. Speaking of blue eyed soul singers, I mentioned Paul Smith (if I have his name correct). He has a big hit that is getting tremendous airplays these days. Hearing his voice, I think Macca's Souvenir would be a perfect cover for him. What do you think?

http://www.bobdylanisis.com/contents/en-uk/d19.html ?The Art of Paul McCartney,? a 32-track tribute album featuring covers of Paul McCartney songs both from his Beatles days and solo career by the likes of Bob Dylan, Brian Wilson, Roger Daltrey, Jeff Lynne and more, was announced April 3 by Arctic Poppy Records. The company says the list of artists besides those already mentioned also include Billy Joel, Steve Miller Band, Willie Nelson, Barry Gibb, Jamie Cullum, and Corinne Bailey Rae. The songs to be covered include ?Live and Let Die,? ?Let It Be,? ?Yesterday,? ?All My Loving,? ?Things We Said Today,? ?The Long and Winding Road,? ?Hello Goodbye,? ?Drive My Car,? ?Hey Jude,? ?Let Me Roll It,? ?Listen to What the Man Said? and ?Every Night.? The company says it has received final mixed tracks for the Paul McCartney album and said "design and marketing plans are in full swing." The Dylan fan tribute magazine Isis reported that boxset and collectors' editions of the album will be released in the summer, with the standard album version coming out later in the year, though this was not included in the company's announcement.
______________________________________________________ Given the names of the artists, I was excited about the prospects of this "tribute" CD until I saw the tracklisting. Are you kidding me? Do we need another cover of Live & Let Die, Let It Be, Yesterday, Hey Jude, Long and Winding Road etc. Could this tracklist be more unimaginative? Even the Solo/Wings songs are too known in my opinion. One of Paul's great strengths is his diversity and sheer volume of high quality material. As a fan, I would be far more excited to buy a covers album that tackles his very good lesser known Solo gems. He has so many that could make such an interesting album. I recently saw a cover of Dear Boy on U-tube from an unknown artist that I thought was great. Look at all the potentially good cover songs from CD's like Flaming Pie, Flowers, Off the Ground, Driving Rain, Chaos, New alone. Judging by the tracklist shown so far, I would have little interest.
Totally agree. The only thing that caught my eye was Brian Wilson doing "Wanderlust". I will not buy this album, however, because when I want to listen to those songs, it will be Paul's and/or The Beatles' versions. It's kind of like loving seeing "Beatlemania" on Broadway; all the great song re-creations, but would/did I buy the soundtrack? Of course not. The cast versions of those songs were not the versions I would ever listen to at home. Same with all this. Happy such a great list of artists were part of the project...but that's as far as it goes....for me. Nice of them to be part of this tribute...but...

I have a different take on this CD than some of you. I find it refreshing to hear Dylan sing a McCartney song. Why on earth do I want some young, clear voiced person to sing it? That's how Paul sang it! Also, while McCartney has a first rate voice, the truth is I have heard his versions of these songs millions of times. I am not going to listen to them again. THIS, however, I will listen to because they are new twists on an old theme. Do I REALLY need to hear McCartney's version of Yesterday from 1965 again? The answer is no. I've HEARD it! Willie Nelson, however, does a nice version from his perspective. It gives me a new perspective of the song. As for the track choices, I suspect they actually want to SELL some of these CDs. Artists covering Calico Sky and Jenny Wren would be as much of a snoozer as, well, the McCartney versions. I mean sales-wise. I will be buying an extra copy of this tribute CD collection for my brother on his birthday!

I like cover bands. Some people want it to be EXACTLY as they remember it. I figure...if it's a new twist on an old song...it gets more interesting to see where it goes or where the artist goes. But I also like the versions of a few of these songs that sound so similiar to Macca...just to hear someone trying to get close to his rockin voice! He (Paul) has so many...voices & hits.

I agree. Furthermore, this is a TRIBUTE, an HOMAGE to one the great songwriters of the 20th century. I bet Paul will get a kick out of Dylan and Nelson singing his songs. And KISS and Cheap Trick too. These versions aren't meant to REPLACE the originals. They are to honor the composer.
-
Their hoping to boost sales by having big names. I get that. I also get if someone doesn't want to buy this. But I definately liked it more after i listened to the stream of it. Some versions hew closer to the original than i prefer, but having listened to a number of tribute albums - this one does have the advantage of not really having very many stinkers. Everything is at least solid. I will say I would have loved a few more modern acts as I think most of the best covers on this are the ones by the younger artists. Jamie Cullum's Every Night I like alot, Owl City's Listen to What the Man Said is a nice modern interpretation. Corinne Bailey Rae's Bluebird is simply exquisite. And the cover of No More Lonely Nights was an absolute revalation to me - imo the best one on the album. But a couple of the old guys turn in inspired takes including Brian Wilson's Wanderlust, Willie Nelson's Yesterday, Heart's Letting Go, BB king's On the Way and Smokey Robinson's So Bad. Most of those are just great match of song to artist.. I'm hoping this is a success for Artic Poppy so they decide to do another one. There are still plenty of artists friends of Paul who weren't on this - Elvis Costello, James Taylor, Dave Grohl, Eric Clapton and they could add a few more current artists. This compilation also has a pretty good spectrum of songs (would have loved a few more recent ones), to the average listener, the majority of these songs are not songs they will know well. Like I said, I totally get it if someone doesn't want this tribute album, but as they go I think it is a very strong one. It's a real feather in the cap that as Rolling Stone said this is likely the biggest list of names ever to contribute to a tribute album. As someone mentioned previously it really showcases not just what a strong songwriter he is, but what an incredible singer he was in his heyday. Most of the artists are singing the songs down a tone or semi-tone and they still aren't as good vocally as the original. RamblinRed
