New in the Charts Thread

OK, I was misled by the hitsdailydouble figures earlier. Their final prediction is that NEW only drops to 16 which makes a big difference from 49 !!! REJOICE !!! D

How can a TOP 5 not be a HIT ALBUM??
well of course New was a hit album.......for a week or two. But it would have been even more of a hit album had it stayed in the top 5 or top 20 for six months or so. When a new album by someone like Paul McCartney has fallen out of the top 100 within six weeks of release (which is likely to be the case in the UK) then its going to be judged as a failure....relatively speaking.
Maybe Paul should have put "BEATLE PAUL MCCARTNEY" on the front of the CD and it would have sold more copies. :

________________________________ YES IT IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE. If "NEW" only drops 4 spots to #16, it shows that "word of mouth" might be working. Afterall, unless I am wrong, Paul has been out of the US for a couple of weeks now. To stay in the Top 20 with virtually no promotions, TV appearances or tour is telling me that people are going out and buying "NEW" based on reading one of the reviews, hearing about NEW from a friend etc. It could mean that this album might have legs afterall. Let's hope it does only fall to #16.

You can't draw solid conclusions from the partial HitsDailyDouble figures as they start to come in, because you can't tell what the source is. It could be that the first batch of figures that showed Paul at #49 came from iTunes, which isn't where Paul is strongest.

I agree that word of mouth seems to be kicking in strong at the moment and breathing new life into its sales, though just enough to slow its decline. I've seen the word of mouth taking effect first hand and have very strong mixed feelings: on one hand, it very exciting to see people springing up all over the place talking about how great and underrated the album is. On the other hand, a large part of me is privately fuming with thoughts like "where were you when it first dropped??" This is kind of like when people hear Wings material in depth for the first time and realize Paul had actual talent after the Beatles and that it wasn't just John...

Officially dropped from 11 to 17 on Billboard in its 3rd week. It certainly won`t reenter the Top 10. The question now is how many weeks will it stay on radar, say in the Top 40. Elton who entered at 4 is now at 75 in its 6th week. For NEW to be successful in any sense it must remain a Top40 album for at least another 3 weeks. Hope the vinyl sales kick in at the the end of November.

He's still playing in Target on the music infomercial... nice to hear when you're shopping in the music section

I think it's delusional think there will be enough vinyl sales to make much of a dent in its chart position. The only thing that would make a difference is more live or TV appearances, but there's no sign of that happening (well, unless you're in Japan).

While some of us (including me) are disappointed in the sales results of NEW so far....let me bring out some positives. *For NEW to be at #17 in the Billboard US Album Chart at this point is actually pretty good considering that Paul has been out of the country for the last 2 weeks. He obviously is not tourning here nor has he appeared on any US TV/Radio Programs (including none of the largest national programs). People ahead of him on the charts are contstantly in the limelight here and/or are touring *Of the 16 albums ahead of Paul this week, 7 of them are brand new releases (when you get your biggest numbers) this week. *The big young artists that get played all the time and have been constantly in the limelight are also ahead of Paul which you would expect (Miley at #9, Katy Perry at # 2, Justin Timberlake #13, Drake #5) *A Band as strong as Pearl Jam who have been in the midst of a national tour promoting their album is only 6 places ahead of Paul at #11 Without Paul doing any publicity or shows in the US coupled with a total lack of radio airplay, it is telling me that "word of mouth" is going a long way in keeping Paul relatively strong in the charts. While I expect him to lose ground over the next 2 weeks (He is in Japan touring and there will be quite of few new releases) I just hope that "word of mouth" can continue and "New" can stay near (lets say) the Top 50 or even 60. If Paul can then come back to the US in early December and hit some of the big TV Shows, then NEW might just be able to reverse direction and get back in the Top 30 or so. I still believe that if Paul can stay on the charts going into 2014 and if he announces a major US tour coupled with the 50 Anniversary of the Beatles landing in America, NEW can have a resurgence in sales and stay there for many weeks. How impressive would that be for someone at 71 years young.

So, is Norway the only country where NEW hit No. 1?

Gawd, that reminds me of the Imagine doco (and I'm going on memory, so could be wrong - too hard to research 'cos then I'd have to pull out the DVD, change my TV setting, fast forward, listen to Yoko giving "expert" advice on production and instrumentation, etc), but I recall John and George having a discussion about the Beatles as solo artists.... "Beatle Ed is doing big in Sweden." (close enough to Norway) Now, I always thought they were having a dig at Paul.... Could've been Ringo? Or was John referring to himself in his magnificent self-deprecating style? Or am I completely travelling the wrong way down a one-way street? At any rate, it just reminded me of that. I still think #3 is a very good result. And NEW is a winner.
