New in the Charts Thread

Does anyone know an AC or Triple A station in Atlanta that will play NEW?

While I would like him at No1 I don't see all the fuss many of his albums haven't reached No 1, also saying that Queenie Eye wont make a difference isn't strictly true either because looked what happened with Say Say Say back in the 80's soon as the video came out the song went back up the charts and Pipes Of Peace album went back up to 4 so it can happened. I thought that was a great album and should have been number 1 I also loved Driving Rain but look what happened to that
Maybe in Britain. In the U.S., the highest POP charted was #15, even though Say Say Say was a massive hit single.
That's my point, if POP only reached 15 back in 1983 and in 2013 he's reached 3 then he's doing very well surely!

On WXPN (Triple A station in Philly), "New" has now been dropped completely, and "Queenie Eye" is getting about two plays a day.

During the 1989-90 tour, yes, he played 6 new songs and opened up with Figure of Eight....and guess what...... FLowers hit #1 in the UK...... In 1993 he played 6 new songs...and guess what.....Hope of deliverance was a worldwide smash hit......... 2002......didn't even play the original single, Lover to a friend, cut down to 3 songs....and Driving Rain, a great masterpiece, didn't even dash to #1. 2005.......4 songs only and didn't play any good songs from the album, no this happened before, no At the mercy, no promise to you girl, no anyway......and album sales was soft. 2007, no proper tour, even during those secret gigs he only played 4 new songs......if he had a chance to play 10 songs from a new album, would have been during those secret shows, yet, again, plays lady madonna and get back.......oh boy!!!!! and didn't even play the single ever present past????? it was supposedly the single, and didn't even play it live????? don't' get it. 2013,.........again.....out there tour.....no new song, no hype no nothing. Promotional pop up shows....plays NEW twice....lol!!!!!!! seriously...... then we wonder why he hasn't had a #1 album in over 20 years. He should really adopt the attitude " i don't give an F" and pull a bob dylan....play obscure songs, or pull a bruce springsteen or prince, a different show every night...... It's as if he is not proud of his solo work or something...that's really irritating me........makes my blood boil.... Whenever he puts down Press to play or his other work, or say stupid things like he doesn't remember his work form the 70's, it's making not wanna be his hard core fan anymore.... Beatles beatles beatles, i am sick and tired of those stupid stories, stupid interviews, enough is enough!!!!!!! I have to respect Bob Dylan for finding new fans, and concentrating on them, the new fans are the ones supporting him and buy his records.....Macca should do the same, the new fans are the ones who will not judge him for what he did 50 years ago, they are the ones appreciating him for his current work...and that's the key to stay relevant........He is a active musician....not a tribute act...for goodness sake...... Man... It makes me so angry just to think about it!!!! NEW should be dominating the charts.....not lose out to some 21 year old kid or to Pear Jam....this is totally unacceptable !!!!!!!!
Fantastic post.

None of this is surprising. He misses out on his target audience. Once again how many thousands of people shelled out 250 a ticket to see him this summer? If all of them bought a cd for $14 he'd have a major hit. Instead he pretty much ignores his core audience in the publicity blitz and goes for the young crowd who will have no interest in him whatsoever except for seeing him as a cultural icon. Not to mention that he does major publicity in the US before the cd is out, so anyone who may have been slightly interested couldnt' go out and buy the cd. The only hope now is that it has some more lasting power and they don't drop the ball. Pushing out the singles, especially something like Queenie Eye in the right places could stir up the oldies to perhaps go and buy a cd, which is something many of us haven't done in years. In my circle of non Paul fans, none of them have bought a cd by anyone in years. However if they were aware of it and heard some of it maybe they would.

"It's as if he is not proud of his solo work or something...that's really irritating me........makes my blood boil.... Whenever he puts down Press to play or his other work, or say stupid things like he doesn't remember his work form the 70's, it's making not wanna be his hard core fan anymore.... FYI - McCartney actually said in interview something to the effect that "Revolver" came out before "Rubber Soul" so obviously he does not remember stuff about the Beatles also. McCartney also made a statement about the first song he every wrote with Lennon recently which fans on this board said was different from what he had said years earlier. As for not remembering stuff from the 70's, I believe the statement was in the context of not always remembering which album a particualr song came from which is not really a put down of the work IMO. If McCartney is not happy with a particular record (Press To Play) from over 25 years ago, it is his right to say it because he created it. Really, what artist thinks every record they made is a gem. McCartney has said he is very proud of "New" and I remember in interviews about CHAOS he said he liked it very much and enjoyed working with Godrich. McCartney has also been very positive when talking about the experience of doing "The Fireman" records, he has said he enjoys the freedom of just "winging" it -pardon the pun. "NEW should be dominating the charts.....not lose out to some 21 year old kid or to Pear Jam....this is totally unacceptable !!!!!!!!" That 21 year old kid appeals to the record buying demographic and has had her name in the news constantly due to her "outrageous" performance. Whether older people like it or not, it was publicity for her which is what she wanted and sells records. As for Pearl Jam, it is their first new record in years and they are very popular rock band. IMO - you are living in fantasy land if you think "New" should dominate the current charts. I like "New" and would have loved it to be #1 but at this stage of McCartney's career, not going to really get upset about "New" entering the charts at #3.

This occurs to me every now and then: Has anybody noticed that, just as Paul McCartney was experiencing his commercial decline in the late-'80s, George Harrison was more commercially successful than ever? It's almost as if the universe didn't want two former Beatles dominating the charts at the same time. Paul's Press To Play didn't do well at all. The single, "Press" barely made it into the Top 40 -- and, yet, the following year, Harrison's "Got My Mind Set On You" was on the radio so much that it drove me crazy. Even when Flowers In The Dirt was released, it did well, but nowhere near the level of what Harrison's Traveling Wilburys were doing. Makes me wonder sometimes.

Oh dear. "Pipes of Peace" and "Driving Rain" are two CDs that I have totally put away. I pulled off a few songs from them that I added to a Best of Paul CD, (well, I have several for him) but have no plans to listen to those two CDs from start to finish again!! Ever! That kind of goes for McCartney II also, sad to say. Some things I just don't care for, I guess. BUT...."NEW" will be played constantly. Love it from start to finish!! (I suppose I could someday change my mind....about the two I put away. I used to think I would not play "Ram" again, but then it was remastered and I purchased it out found out I liked it much more than I had thought I did/would.)

That's the first Paul McCartney album that I really got into. Made me a fan.

Couple of questions: Is it official that Paul is going to enter the Charts at #3. I was hoping that Paul was going to beat Miley and enter a #2. Does these numbers include people who download the whole album on top of the people who purchase CD's. ________________________________________________________ A #3 showing is still amazing for someone who is 71. I think Paul's Marketing team overall has done a good job but the key is keeping it going and sustaining sales. One thing I think this proves again is that the boomers in general (my generation) just don't buy new CD's anymore. I am thinking of all the people in the US who attended Paul's shows this year and all the great reviews that "NEW" has garnered. With this combination you would think the boomers would have a stronger impact on sales. As I said, they just don't buy new music even if they loved the Beatles and Paul when they were young. 75,000 Units just doesn't seem like much when it is Paul and so many critics raved about this album. Come to think of it, I have many friends who are in their mid 40's to 60's and they just don't buy new music at all. I've asked a bunch of them if they have bought Paul's new album, and they look at me like like the thought would never enter their head. I still tell them how great it is in the hopes that they will. I have a couple of friends that like me are really into Macca's music and I love talking about the various tracks with them but people like us are few and far between. This being said, NEW has great quality to it and should have "legs". But, Paul needs to make some strong TV appearances in the US before he goes to Japan. I hope these are in the works. Also, Paul needs to tour in 2014 and play at least 6 or 7 from NEW. Besides the 4 tracks we've heard, there are several other candidates that are begging to be played live. Again, this album is great and if it gets heard, I think it has a chance to stay in the charts for several months ahead (not top 10 but in the 20's or 30's). Wouldn't it be great if NEW was still in the upper tier of the Top 200 in February when it is the 50th anniversary of the Beatles coming to America and appearing on the Ed Sullivan Show.

This has been my point all along. He's targetting the wrong audiences. All of those people who attended his shows over the summer did not buy this cd.
-
So, if I'm understanding you guys, you feel that Paul should avoid tv appearances that target the hip, youth demographic -- and he should target his "base" on shows like Good Morning America, The View, etc.? That actually makes sense.

I don't think Paul will ever get anything right, poor chap!! Too much marketing, too little marketing, playing the wrong songs, talking about the wrong things, his memory, his hair, his thumbs... Anyway brilliant album wherever it sits in the charts, I'm glad I own it and am enjoying it immensely

Should be official very soon in Billboard. They always announce the Top 10 on Wednesday, before the whole chart is published Thursday, and those numbers do include downloads. It would be nice if Paul stopped in the US before Japan. Seems the focus right now is on the "Queenie Eye" video. Not saying it'll be a hit single, but with all the celebrities it should get a lot of attention and help album sales somewhat. I think there's a chance the album could hold on in the top 200 through the holidays (though I don't expect him to stay near the top for long at all), but he's also competing with himself, with the Beatles' "Live at the BBC, Vol. 2" about to come out and steal away some attention from "New."

Just looking at some numbers on YouTube for reference. New (static black and white logo video) - 1,477,853 views New (impromptu acoustic performance) - 258,915 views New (lyric video) - 515,811 views Queenie Eye (60-second video trailer) - 60,168 views Katy Perry: Roar (official video) - 138,715,295 views Roar (lyric video) - 54,707,867 Miley Cyrus: Wrecking Ball (official video) - 253,264,649 views Yep, Paul's in a completely different universe! "Queenie Eye," with its celebrities, should easily outstrip all the "New" videos put together, but beyond that....? (And while I was writing that, they put out an album sampler on YouTube. Trying to cover all the bases!)

As much as I personally despise those shows, in a word yes. Most of his audience lies there. And the late night shows, not the late late night shows.

Rock legend Paul McCartney enters at No. 3 with his new studio album, "New." It sold 67,000 copies in its first week. It's the 19th top 10 set for the Beatle, counting his solo work and releases with Wings (but not his Beatles material). The "New" album is his first of all-new songs since 2007's "Memory Almost Full" debuted and peaked at No. 3 with 161,000. After that, he issued the mostly-covers album "Kisses on the Bottom" in 2012, which debuted and peaked at No. 5 off a 74,000 start.

There it is, straight from Billboard. Miley sold only about 5,000 more copies. Close, Paul, but no ciguitar. http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/5763242/pearl-jam-earns-fifth-no-1-album-on-billboard-200
