New in the Charts Thread

Surely there's still time for it to hit number one ? I suppose we just have to wait to see if the album has legs...
Established artists with new albums never gain sales after the first week, because their mass of hardcore fans buy the album as soon as it's released (or preorder). "New" ain't going to be #1 in the U.S., and we need to get used to it. That said, I am cautiously optimistic that the album will hold on decently in week #2, with sales perhaps dropping less than 50% (i.e. way better than Miley Cyrus did). That should easily be good enough to keep it in the top 10, and maybe even the top 5, given that the only certain monster new release is Katy Perry, who's a lock for #1. I'm optimistic for several reasons. First, "New" is back up to #2 on Amazon, moving ahead of Pearl Jam and now only trailing Perry. Second, the Rolling Stone cover arriving in subscribers' mailboxes this week is likely to give Paul a boost in his strongest demographic (and indeed, may have helped push the album up a notch on Amazon). Third, there will be at least a small burst of attention to the celebrity-filled "Queenie Eye" video this week. Finally, the single "New" continues its resurgence on Adult Contemporary radio, up 159 spins over the same period a week ago. While the publicly available charts give only partial info on what stations are playing the song (see http://www.fmqb.com/Article.asp?id=255601),,) what one can glean suggests that much of this increase is stations starting to play the song that weren't playing it before -- e.g. WSHH in Pittsburgh. While it's not a major radio hit, this means hundreds of thousands of listeners are likely hearing the song for the first time. Add all these things together and the album has a fighting chance at a decent second week.

So, if I'm understanding you guys, you feel that Paul should avoid tv appearances that target the hip, youth demographic -- and he should target his "base" on shows like Good Morning America, The View, etc.? That actually makes sense.
Being on Ellen couldn't hurt. She loves Paul and had him on when he released "Chaos...", I believe Not sure. At least I know he was on her show once promoting his new album...whatever it was. LOL I know that when she has someone on with a song I like, (artists I'm not familiar with) I promptly go to iTunes and buy it, if not the entire album. Did that for Blind Pilot and other artists she's had on her show. She's kinda' my source...or one of them...for "new" music. As for Paul's/Beatles' boomer fans, I believe they stick to Classic Rock. Period. They may go to his concerts 'cause he plays THAT music. Doesn't seem to occur to some original fans to buy new stuff. Actually, regarding the early morning news shows, Paul didn't have to be there. They reviewed his album and loved it! (Or so I've read on the internet.) The woman on CBS' morning show said it was "perfect".

Did you happen to see the video of all the famous people who are going to be on the video wandering around Abbey Road Studio and schmoozing with Paul? That alone is, or will be, as good as the video they were there to make. In one "scene" Paul stands along side of Chris Pine...think that's his name...and Paul said to him: "Stop being so tall." Shades of A Hard Day's Night. I mean there was Depp, Streep, Jude Law, and on and one just milling about bowing to Paul's guitars and marveling about what had happened in that studio!!!

I agree with Bruce, it has no chance at #1 on Billboard Album charts because of Katy Perry. Incidently, they had a huge feature on Katy Perry this past Tuesday in the USA Today. That what I was hoping that Paul would get the previous week. It did get a good review so I guess that was ok. It's far more important in my opinion that "NEW" can sustain good consistent sales over the next few weeks going into the Christmas season (i.e. in the Top 10 or even Top 20) than having a #1 for one week and disappearing. This is why I think (hope) that Paul does appear on some US national shows over the next couple of weeks. Having the Rollingstone cover and feature is good but the more he is visible on TV the better. I loved the Kimmel show but it was on very late for most people. Here's a rundown on shows that hopefully Paul's people are pushing for: *one of the big morning shows (CBS, ABC or NBC) - good demographic especially for women *Ellen or the View (late morning or afternoon audience - again good female demographic *Piers Morgan (CNN) this is a natural for Paul. Piers is from England and his Liberal views match Paul's well plus it is an evening audience that's not too late (just make sure that it doesn't go against a World Series game. *Sunday Morning CBS - this is a fantastic show and Paul has appeared on this show before. "New" has been advertised between their entertaining segments. Very artsy type of show they are always profiling the arts * How about trying to get the Queens Performing Arts show on one of the Cable shows/PBS. These are just some ideas I came up with off the top of my head. I am sure that there are others. "NEW" is such a great album and Paul's team have to be creative to get it known to the masses. Any other Marketing thoughts for Paul and "NEW" over the next weeks until he's off to Japan.

He could definitely do a lot of those things, BJ. The least likely to me is Piers Morgan. Paul doesn't like to get into political conversations on TV so much... or Paul could make it a condition to avoid politics in the interview. Whatever he does now, though, I think could get tied in to the new Beatles BBC release, and that could spark all kinds of 50th anniversary talk, which might distract from his new album. But I do think he could do something out of your suggestions!

Yeah! Did you hear Paul tell him that was a line from A Hard Day's Night? I wonder if Chris knew wtf he was talking about!

Maybe. He should have, but the expression on his face didn't change when Paul told him the origination of the line. But then, he (Chris) seemed more concerned with how he looked on camera...looking directly into it. Wanted to keep that smile/same expression going....

Solo Macca has had 11 #1 albums (either US or UK). Last #1 was Flowers. Its been way too long & inexcusable. Was hoping 'New' would be #12, but it looks like it wall fall short to Pearl Jam at #2. Paul's Marketing people should have known better to not release the album the same week as Pearl Jam!
If they waited a week, it would have been Katy Perry!! She will/would have sold tons more than Pearl Jam, so waiting a week would not have helped. Then it would be Eminem or some other big "current" artist, and on and on. The fall season has big roll-outs from tons of heavyweights. The week he released it would not have mattered, sadly.

in the Graham Norton show, I could just see at one point that Paul was probably thinking, " dammit, album is goanna sink pretty soon cause of that dam pop princess" if any time was a perfect time to release this album, it would of been the start of next year. far as I know, nothing huge is coming out.

Sad that "NEW" sold only 67,000 copies in its first week...in the entire country! That's less than the number of people who show up in one city for a concert. And he sells out stadiums in numerous cities all over the country! Why don't those people, or some of them, buy his new music???? (I did my part. I bought SIX copies of "NEW", 1 at iTunes to have all the songs immediately, 1 at Amazon, 2 at FYE (for the cube), 1 at Best Buy for the photos and 1 at target for the DVD! :

Paul has his first #1 album in Norway since Flowers in the Dirt.

And just imagine how many of us bought extra copies. I bought two myself. Seems like, between the extremes, it could average out to two per fan, which means that only about 33,500 people bought the album the first week. Certainly a lot fewer than 67,000 people, anyway. I guess we've already gone through the reasons, but it's still rather remarkable, isn't it?
-
I was just thinking about all the McCartney albums, etc. that I've bought this year alone: NEW, the Wings Over America reissue, the Ram remaster, the Rockshow DVD. Paul has moved a LOT of units in 2013, despite the modest sales of NEW. Still, considering that he virtually tied with Miley Cyrus last week, he's more in-the-game than some of us think.

your not going to like the Australia sales for the first week then... 1930.... and only 169 in second week

Hmmm, why isn't Paul Number 1? Well, I went into my local Walmart today, and figured I would look for "New". Hey, Katy Perry has a huge display in the main aisle! What? What's this? Hey, I see "New" in the display! Huh? Only 3 copies! Not Deluxe, 3 regular CDs! If I wasn't a fan, I wouldn't have even noticed it! Hey, kinda crazy not having Paul's name standing Out There on the front of the CD jacket! Poor design if ya ask me (I know, noone's asking me). Even worse! Hey, they don't even have a PAUL MCCARTNEY section in the CD area!!! Jesse McCartney! That's it! The largest store in America, Walmart! I am actually surprised the album is doing as good as it is in the States. When I bought the album in Target the day it was on sale, at least it was on display at the end of the main aisle, top shelf, full row, half Deluxe (with bonus DVD) and half regular. When people criticize it's place in the charts, just try and find the disk locally. Podgie (I find this disgraceful...should have a full display!) Monkey

I think Paul should do some more of those "pop up" shows -- in fact, a mini-tour of 'em... ...and sell the album at every show!
